The Departure of the Israelites from Egypt by Frans Francken the Younger
Located in Knokke, BE
Frans Francken the Younger 1581 - Antwerp - 1642 Flemish Painter 'The Departure of the Israelites from Egypt – The Exodus', c. 1610 - 1620 Medium: pen in sepia on paper Dimensions: mage size 26 x 34,5 cm, frame size 55 x 65,5 cm Biography: Frans Francken the Younger, born in Antwerp in 1581 and passing away on May 6, 1642, also in Antwerp, was a distinguished Flemish painter. He is recognized as the most prominent and productive member of the renowned Francken family of artists. Francken explored a wide range of subjects, creating large altarpieces for churches and producing smaller works depicting historical, mythological, and allegorical scenes. Notably, his depictions of collectors’ cabinets established a popular new genre of art during his era. He was known for collaborating with other artists, enriching their works with his skilled renderings of figures and narrative elements, complementing specialists in landscape, architectural scenes, and floral still-life painting. Francken was born to Frans Francken the Elder and Elisabeth Mertens. His father was a pupil of Antwerp’s leading history painter, Frans Floris, and a significant creator of altarpieces in Flanders during his time. Francken received his artistic training under the guidance of his father. Additionally, it is possible that Frans and his brother, Hieronymus Francken II, received further instruction in the workshop of their uncle, Hieronymus Francken I, in Paris. A versatile artist, Francken made significant contributions to various genres within Flemish art, introducing new themes and subjects. Many of his works comprised small-scale historical, allegorical, and biblical cabinet paintings, often emphasizing figures. He is credited with either inventing or popularizing several novel themes that gained popularity in Flemish painting, including genre scenes featuring monkeys (also known as singeries) and Kunstkammer or gallery paintings, presenting a plethora of natural and artistic treasures against a neutral wall. Francken introduced various other unconventional themes that later gained traction, such as the ‘Triumphal Procession of Amphitrite’ and ‘Croesus and Solon.’ He also produced a series of paintings depicting witches and witchcraft, including portrayals of witches’ sabbats. His remarkable paintings are held in the collections of numerous major museums throughout Europe. Francken specialized in rendering the human figure, as evidenced by etched and engraved portraits of the artist by Anthony van Dyck (after Peter Paul Rubens), identifying him with the Latin inscription: ‘ANTVERIÆ PICTOR HVMANARVM FIGVRARVM’ (Figure painter of Antwerp). He was frequently invited to contribute figures to compositions by other esteemed artists, including landscape artists such as Tobias Verhaecht, Abraham Govaerts, and Joos de Momper...

Clairobscur – 06-10-20, Drawing, Pastels on Pastel Sandpaper
By Corne Akkers
Located in Yardley, PA
Clairobscur – 06-10-20 Clairobscur In 2013 I started this clairobscur lit nude and tucked it in one of pastel maps, only to forget about it for years and years. I remembered I was not quite satisfied by the color saturation and the color scheme itself. It leaned too much on the red and purple side. Besides that, the proportions were slightly off. Mishaps If you become curious right now, I have a whole bag of mishaps loitering about. It is one of the long and winding roads an artist has to take, especially when frantically looking for a style to call my own. In the meantime this kind of impressionism in hatched strokes I did a lot but once in a while it is fun to take it up once again. In fact posting ‘Pastel Study 04 (2013)’ reminded me to finish this one. Second Chance Sometimes you have to give a pastel a second chance or in other worlds...

Clingendael – 31-03-23, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper
By Corne Akkers
Located in Yardley, PA
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head This graphite pencil drawing ‘Clingendael – 31-03-23’follows up my previous one of Delft. For no particular reason I wanted to draw a bit of nature again. Or is it that I long for nature blossoming in Spring? Whereas in the Po Valley, Italy and Spain people scream for rain we get it here in abundance. It’s raining cats and dogs during March and this everlasting wind. Bleh! Then again, March and April in The Netherlands are famous for their unpredictability. For the time being it’s sketching indoors and therefor I draw from the stack of last year’s photos. Lambs in Clingendael There is this specific spot near the entrance of estate ‘Clingendael’ where they keep some farm animals. Besides horses and cows, sheep can also be found there. I never have been a sucker for depicting little lambs, darling ponies and golden retrievers. The spot that marks this drawing was special though. The picture was from last May and sunshine was creeping through tree leaves. All of a sudden a little lamb was caught by the light, just about to drink from the through. Just a lucky shot with the camera I think which comes in handy on a rainy day like this. The moral of the story is this. A subject can’t be corny enough as long as it is lit in a beautiful way. Not the First Time When I come to think of it, I have done some animals only themes in the past. Homage to a Dying...

Slava Ukraini – 18-04-22, Painting, Oil on Canvas
By Corne Akkers
Located in Yardley, PA
Freedom above All The West has recently become familiar with the phrase ‘Slava Ukraini’. Obviously everyone who is a democrat and values freedom above all can support the meaning of this slogan. It seems as if the world has split into the good and the bad all of a sudden. The free world is pro and some rascalious countries keep supporting Russia’s goals. Strange how Europe and NATO can feel united more than ever whereas recently disunity was rife. Strong Ukrainian Women Vesna – 14-03-22 was my last oil with the Ukrainian theme. Somehow I felt the story for me to tell wasn’t finished yet. My reference graphite pencil drawing ‘Hold Your Horses – 04-01-22’ had the Scythians as theme. Strange why I chose to do an oil ‘Una in Aliam – 01-09-19’ covering the same topic three years back. In particular it tells of the legend of the Amazons. Legend has it they were Scythian warrior women on horseback. No great mind is needed to associate them with modern strong Ukrainian women rising up against the Russian agressor. And so I read the story of a woman from Kiev who bought a sniper rifle just to be able to defend her city and country. This painting is to honor those women and of course all freedom fighters in the Ukraine in general. New World Order There also was another reason to do another Ukrainian painting, to me an urgent one. Instead of fearfully waiting for whatever new world order will arise I decided to create one myself. This painting all makes sense to me. Ukrainian’s struggle is not theirs but ours too. A couple of days ago I commented on a post by Jerry Saltz. I stated law school was the best preparation for my work as an artist. Now I know why. Becoming a master in international law makes me mastering my artistic diction as well. I cannot ever be a soldier but I hold sound weapons in my hands: pencil and brush! Everything Gold The statues symbolize my view on art. I think they are beautiful and the pinnacle of aesthetics. One of them is Anton Gratz’s and the other ones I don’t know who made them. Makes me realize I maybe should start an art movement called ‘back to aesthetics’ by the way. The gold paint is a reference to the world famous Scythian gold...

Still life with a Chinese bowl by Jean Grimal
By Jean Grimal
Located in Gent, VOV
Jean Grimal is a true 20th century discovery. This breathtaking piece is a gorgeous example of his mastery as an artist. He beautifully creates chiaroscuro in this painting. The way the light touches the edges of the Chinese bowl and the grapes is an example of his skill in representing light. Jean Grimal (1942-1998) was born in the town of Tulle, France in 1942. Jean’s family moved to Paris when he was 8 years of age. After receiving a classical French education with studies in Latin and Greek, Jean Grimal entered the University to receive his Baccalaureate. He then attended Claude Barnard School for three years, when he received his Art Degree.  Upon completion Grimal taught art for seven years.  As Grimal’s own interest in formal painting and art began to possess him, the artist’s destiny changed.  In 1967 Jean Grimal stepped aside from teaching and pursued a career in professional painting and working as an illustrator in advertising.  As an advertising illustrator, Grimal worked with Lise Goldfard for more than 25 years at Studio 44 where they collaborated with major and important accounts, such as: Air France, Christofle, Peugeot, Lacoste, to name a few. At the same time he began presenting his formal paintings to galleries in Paris and Cannes, France and in London and Windsor, England.  Much to his surprise, Grimal found that his paintings were sought after by major art galleries and collectors throughout Europe.  After a number of years of being an important and successful art illustrator for these major accounts, he found himself having to choose between the two.  Fortunately for collectors, he chose to dedicate his life to the classical style of painting.  Jean looked at the simplest things in life through a microscope, where he could take the simplest object and depict the age of the fruit or the leaf. Jean Grimal received great pleasure from his work and painted for over thirty years.  As his style matured and became ever more perfect Jean Grimal truly reached the pinnacle of his career.  The artist’s methods were particularly distinguished when measured against his peers.  Grimal’s painting skill was distinctive and exceptional. Jean Grimal was known for his realistic trompe l’oeil and still life paintings.  The artist would carefully arrange the objects to form a satisfying composition.  By painting every shadow, highlight, and reflection within each composition Grimal brought mundane subjects to life.  His tight rendering combined with his attention to light and detail allowed him to blur the lines between illusion and reality, truly making his works one of a kind.  Grimal’s trompe l’oeil paintings consist of intricate compositions of cards, envelopes, photographs, paper of different materials and weights, backs of canvases, images of other artists’ works, kitchen utensils, pistols, and more.  Grimal had a talent for mastering these illusions that deceive the eye in his trompe l’oeil paintings.    No matter what genre Grimal was painting, tight, unperceivable brushwork characterizes his work.  The artist painted every crease and crinkle, every shadow and highlight, every detail.  By doing so, he was able to capture each individual surface texture of the objects in his paintings.  Grimal was also fabulous at depicting light in his paintings- often contrasting strong lights with strong darks, creating chiaroscuro modeling.  His still life paintings are reminiscent of Dutch seventeenth century...
