By Jan Sluijters
Located in AMSTELVEEN, NL
This oil painting on panel by Jan Sluijters depicts a peaceful domestic scene of a sleeping child surrounded by scattered toys on a soft blanket. The work radiates tenderness, with Sluijters’ characteristic use of light and color lending warmth and intimacy to the composition. His style evolved from luminism to fauvism, expressionism, and eventually realism, with his works often celebrating modern life and domestic intimacy. The Martyrdom of Santa Barbara - Bruges, 1530-50
Located in Bruxelles, BE
The Martyrdom of Santa Barbara Wool and silk tapestry Bruges, 1530-50 270 x 198 cm Expertise by Professor Guy Delmarcel This Flemish tapestry is a remarkable example of 16th-century craftsmanship, distinguished by its exceptionally well-preserved color palette. The medaillon-shaped center stands out against a background of dark blue roses and acanthus leaves. It depicts the martyrdom of Saint Barbara, identified by the tower where she was imprisoned. According to legend, her father, Dioscorus, is about to behead her with a scimitar, while an angel descends from the heavens to strike him with lightning. At the bottom, beneath Saint Barbara, two fantastical creatures. On the left is a griffon depicted with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. On the right is a creature with the body of a leopard, the head of an elephant adorned in a fancy blue cloak. Both animals face each other standing either side of a green hill top in the middle of the tapestry. The lavish scene of the tapestry is framed by a border which is embellished with foliage, flowers and fantastical elephant heads in blue and white on a red background. The corners and center of the edges display goldsmith-objects. The vibrant brick-red colour and striking bluish-green leaves create a stunning visual impact, showcasing the outstanding state of conservation. Professor Guy Delmarcel connects this tapestry to a series of textiles produced in Bruges after 1530, characterized by their fantastical nature scenes populated with imaginative creatures. Most feature similar roses and acanthus-leaves as well as other vegetation, with wild animals appearing ready to attack. Two almost identical pieces preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago (Bruges, 336 x 599 cm) and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam ("Tournai," 285 x 490 cm) serve as prime examples. The entire surface is filled with greenery, along with birds and fantastic animals. This tapestry exemplifies the rich decorative style of the time, merging naturalistic and poetic elements with exotic animals that spark the imagination. Other works of this type follow the theme of the "Closed Garden." In the lower register, fantastical creatures occasionally appear, as seen in the exquisite Bruges Tapestry displayed at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, and in the example from the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. The Parisian tapestry from Bruges features a mythical animal in the lower register, dressed in blue fabric, which closely resembles the animal in our tapestry. If Enghien or other centers produced similar pieces, several elements suggest a stronger connection to Bruges for two formal reasons: The overall colour-palette of our tapestry fabric characterized by pronounced brick-red colours and bluish-green leaves, aligns more closely with Bruges than with Tournai or Enghien. The intricate border design with the warm brick-red background, adorned with floral motifs, goldsmith-inspired elements such as incense burners and small bells, can be traced back to Bruges around 1530. This style, often associated with heraldic imagery, underscores the tapestry's connection to the city's rich artistic heritage. A comparable example is the tapestry featuring the Arms of Paolo Giovio, now part of the Prince of Liechtenstein's collection in Vaduz. This piece, set against a brick-red background, depicts arms and armors, cornucopias, boys riding grotesque dolphins, as well as various flowers and leaves. All available literature dates this group of tapestries to the second quarter of the sixteenth century. A key formal element further supports this dating: the executioner, depicted preparing to behead Barbara, wields a Turkish scimitar, a reference to the frequent Ottoman incursions into Central Europe beginning with the 1529 siege of Vienna...

Aztec Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525, ca.1880
Located in Langweer, NL
Aztec & Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525 This striking pair of early 20th-century costume plates offers a vivid and historically valuable depiction of Aztec and early Mexican dress during the 16th century. Illustrated by Max Tilke and published by Ernst Wasmuth A.G. in Berlin, these prints belong to one of the most respected costume‐historical series of the period. Tilke was known for his meticulous research and his ability to translate ethnographic sources into richly detailed, accurate visual reconstructions. These two plates are among the most vibrant and desirable in the entire publication. Plate 144 presents warriors and nobles in full ceremonial and military attire. Jaguar warriors, eagle warriors, officers, and elite fighters are shown with their distinctive feathered headdresses, painted shields, quilted cotton armor (ichcahuipilli), and symbolic iconography referencing Aztec cosmology and rank. The colors and patterns reflect authentic codex sources, making the plate particularly valuable to historians of pre-Columbian culture. Plate 145 focuses on social classes and civilian dress from the late pre-Hispanic and early colonial period. Market vendors, weavers, young nobles, priests, and high-ranking women appear wearing garments such as tilmas, breechcloths, embroidered huipiles, feathered adornments, and body paint. Together, the two plates offer a rare, well-documented overview of everyday and ceremonial dress from Mexico around 1500–1525. The printing quality is exceptionally fine, with rich color lithography capturing the tonal variations of feathers, textiles, and painted patterns. These plates make a powerful impression when framed and are well suited for collectors of ethnographic art, museum-oriented interiors, historians of Mesoamerica, and designers seeking authentic cultural references. It is now uncommon to find both Mexican plates...

Cartography Print 1852 – Educational Diagram of Mountains, Winds, and Reefs
Located in Langweer, NL
Cartographic Masterpiece 1852 – Illustrated Guide to Map Symbols and Climate Description: This original 1852 plate titled "Illustrations of Chartography Plate I" offers a fascinating and visually rich introduction to 19th-century mapping techniques. Published in A School Atlas of Physical Geography by the eminent Scottish cartographer Alexander Keith Johnston, the plate served as an educational tool designed to teach the principles of cartography, climatology, geology, and meteorology. The detailed engravings include symbolic representations used on maps, such as forms of mountains, volcanoes, reef systems, and rainfall diagrams, along with charts of wind directions, cloud formations, and the system of contouring. Particularly notable is the lower section titled "Climatography," which combines scientific elements into a picturesque landscape featuring a rainbow, tornado, sea spray, and a mountain chain—all stylized to represent the natural forces shaping Earth’s surface. Johnston was a leading cartographer of the Victorian period, and this atlas was used widely in schools and scientific circles for its clarity and innovative visual methods. The plate was engraved and printed by W. & A.K. Johnston, his family firm, which gained a global reputation for excellence in educational publishing. This chart is not only historically significant but also aesthetically appealing, making it an ideal piece for collectors of antique scientific prints...

Pair of Karel Appel Curtains, 1963, Documented at Stedelijk Musem
By Karel Appel
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Super rare and impressive pair of large cotton ''gordijnstof' curtains, designed in 1963 by world renowned Dutch painter and sculptor Karel Appel (1921-2006) for the textile company Hermann Hartman & Co of Amsterdam. This extremely rare, original repeat print textile is documented in the Stedelijk museum's textile collection under object nubmer KNA 1998, please see image 2. Each curtain measures 56.7" X 83.85" (144cm X 213cm). 'Gordijnstof' translates as "curtain fabric" confirming that this textile was originally designed by Appel specifically for use as curtains however being of such an impressive dimension these examples could equally be used as wall hangings ,as photographed, or mounted on both sides of a screen or mounted and framed as an art work in its own right , a practice which is becoming increasingly commonplace as high end textile designs by important artists are becoming increasingly valued , appreciated and sought after in the marketplace. Appel's paintings and sculptures can be found in the collections of some of the world's most prominent museums including the Museum of Modern art in New York and Tate Modern ,London. Each curtain is of a very impressive scale with each measuring 56.7 " (144 cm) X 83.85" (213cm). The curtains are signed on the banding KUNSTENAAR DESSIN ONTWERP Karel Appel, HARTMAN PRINT, AMSTERDAM. Another of Appel's designs for Hermann Hartman,Amsterdam can be found in the collection of the national textile museum in Holland. Please see image 9. Even a small sample of this 1963 textile in good condition would be hard to find today but to find two large scale Appel curtains intact and in beautiful unfaded condition with no staining or fraying must be next to unique today. This is a very rare find and certainly a unique opportunity. Image 10 shows Karel Appel in his atelier in New York in 1966. Provenance: These curtains come from the private collection of a retired Professor from Oxford,UK. Biography: Karel Appel was an Expressionist Dutch painter. He was a member of the famous Cobra, the European group of the late 1940s to early 1950s, which promoted spontaneous expressionism and abstract features in painting. Appel's paintings incorporate applications of vibrant, violent colors often possessing a primal, childlike quality or a schizophrenic innocence. Later in life, Appel turned to creating figurative sculptures. Examples of his work can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, and other collections. Expressionist painter Karel Appel made a name for himself in the world of painting by creating a majestic collection of highly distinguishable work for which he became internationally renowned. From the start, art curators could not ignore Appel's work, which has been exhibited at major museums around the world, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Manhattan-based Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Tate Gallery in London.
