Toast
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Toast" c.1990, is an original color serigraph by American artist Rickey Jewell Hohimer, 1946-2021. It is hand signed, titled and numbered 98/300 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 23.75 x 9.5 inches, framed size is 30.25 x 16.25 inches. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame is slightly damaged, and will be replaced by a new similar black frame when sold. This will bring the over all condition to excellent. About the artist: Although formally trained with a MFA in painting, Rickey Jewell Hohimer has used the styles of Van Gogh and Gaughin to reach for the spontaneity and simplicity of today's folk art. Hohimer creates figures which are not photos of reality; they are romantically stylized to encourage straightforward emotional responses both to the colorful images and to the situations in which they find themselves. Each of Hohimer's paintings lays out a basic story line to which viewers add their own details. "I want the viewer to become personally involved. My paintings offer a change from those which encourage extensive intellectualizing about what the artist is trying to convey. I want viewers to smile -- to enjoy the whimsical nature of what they are experiencing -- to feel it, not to analyze it. His jazz paintings are stories on canvas of inspired musicians spontaneously making music of the moment. Life in the jazz age is clubs and nightlife beckoning to musicians to produce jazz art...

The Drummer
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "The Drummer" 1993 is an original color lithograph on Wove paper by noted Canadian/Inuit artist Kananginak Pootoogook, 1935-2010. It is hand signed, dated, titled, located, described and numbered 31/50 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 22 x 15.5 inches, sheet size is 30 x 22.5 inches, framed size is 39.5 x 31.5 inches. Custom framed in a dark wood frame, with off white backing. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame has minor restorations and very light dents, barely visible. About the artist: Kananginak Pootoogook was an Inuit sculptor and printmaker who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, in Canada. He died as a result of complications related to surgery for lung cancer. Pootoogook was born at a traditional Inuit camp called Ikerasak, near Cape Dorset, Nunavut (then in the Northwest Territories) to Josephie Pootoogook, leader of the camp, and Sarah Ningeokuluk. The family lived a traditional lifestyle hunting and trapping while living in an iglu in the winter and a sod house in the summer and did not move into their first southern style house until 1942. In 1957 Pootoogook married Shooyoo, moved to Cape Dorset and began work for James Houston. Originally, Pootoogook did some carving, made prints and lithographs for other artists. At the same time he was a leader in setting up the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, the first Inuit owned co-op, now part of the Arctic Co-operatives Limited and served from 1959 until 1964 as the president. Although Kananginak had worked with his father, Josephie, in 1959, it was not until the 1970s that Kananginak began work as a full-time artist producing drawings, carvings and prints. According to Terry Ryan, former Co-op manager, Pootoogook was both influenced by and an admirer of the works of his uncle, photographer and historian Peter Pitseolak. The World Wildlife Commission released a limited edition set in 1977 that included four of Pootoogook's images and in 1980 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1997 Pootoogook built a 6 ft (1.8 m) inukshuk in Cape Dorset for former Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc. The inukshuk was dismantled and shipped to Ottawa and with the assistance of his son, Johnny, it was rebuilt at Rideau Hall and unveiled on 21 June, National Aboriginal Day. Pootoogook had several exhibitions and showings of his work. In 2010, he went to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics and to open a showing of his work at the Marion Scott Gallery. He also had a showing of his work, his first solo exhibition at a public institution, at the Museum of Inuit Art in Toronto from February to May 2010. He also received a 2010 National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the arts category from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation. While working on his final, and unfinished, drawing of a Peterhead owned by his father, he was struck by coughing spells, which he declared was cancer. Along with his wife, Shooyoo, he flew to Ottawa, staying at the Larga Baffin home, and was diagnosed with lung cancer. In October 2010, he underwent surgery and did not recover. He died 23 November 2010 in Ottawa. The work of Kananginak Pootoogook is held in numerous collections and museums, includingThe McCord Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, Musee National des Baux Arts...

David Roberts 19th Century Hand Colored Lithograph, "Fortress of Ibrim, Nubia"
By David Roberts
Located in Alamo, CA
"Approach to the Fortress of Ibrim, Nubia" is a 19th century folio sized hand-colored lithograph from the Egypt and Nubia volume of David Roberts’ large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1847. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. The print is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a decorative inner trim, with a cream-colored double mat. It is in excellent condition. The lithograph depicts the Fortress of Ibrim in Nubia in the background, which had been a Roman and an Egyptian fortification for centuries due to its strategic elevation, allowing a view of large portions of the surrounding desert. Men are securing the boat in the foreground for the night, taking down its sails. A herd of cattle drinks and cools themselves in the water on the left. There are four additional listings of David Roberts engravings of Egypt...

Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown
Located in Soquel, CA
Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown by American Beat artist Will Peterson (1928-1994.) This lithograph blends the linework and movement of abstract impressionism with a color field-esque composition. A long copper-brown rectangle shines through from the bottom layer of the colors. It is then crossed in multiple places by black linework and hatching. Around this shape a pale cornflower blue acts as a frame and crosses the brown shape in the center. The addition of the cool black and blue tones creates a sense of warmth in the underlying shape. Lithograph is printed on wove paper which is fixed to a larger piece of handmade paper containing the artists signature and a small embossing found on his other pieces from this time period. This paper is displayed on top of a linen covered board with sturdy wood edges and a plexiglass over over the entire piece. Will Peterson was born in Chicago in 1928 to German immigrant parents. He contracted Polio when he was in High School and thus spent much of his early years ill. During this time he started working as a cartoonist for his high school’s paper. He started his official art studies at Wilber Wright College in Chicago and later earned a BA and a MA at Michigan State University. Here he studied print making and lithography under John S. deMartelly. He began enjoying artistic success while still in graduate school, exhibiting at the Detroit Art Institute, the Terry Art Institute, the National Print Exhibition, and the Boston Printmakers. Peterson was drafted into the army in 1952 and thus spent time in Korea and Japan. His time as an educational specialist in Hokkaido was a formative experience for him and his interest in Japanese calligraphy and other arts influenced his later work. Upon returning to the United States, he moved to Oakland, California. He became involved with the beat movement and after founding the Bay Printmakers Society with fellow artist Mel Strawn...

Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Austria
By Luigi Kasimir

This artwork titled "Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Austria" c.1930 is a color etching on watermarked B.F.K Rives paper by Austrian artist Luigi Kasimir, 1881-1962. It is hand signed in pencil by the artist's estate at the lower center. Published by Graphic International, printed by the artist's son Robert Kasimir The plate mark (image) size is 9.25 x 9.15 inches, the sheet size is 16.85 x 14.25 inches. With full margin. it is in excellent condition, colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist. Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 at Pettau, today Ptuj, Slovenia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He inherited his talent from his ancestors; his grandfather was a painter and a poet, and his father an officer in the Habsburg army, who later became a professional painter. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under Wilhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the coloured etching, and also to his future wife, the artist Tanna Hoernes.[1] He died in 1962 in Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna.Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the coloured etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-coloured with the colour being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch usually in pastel, he then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the colour on the plate, all done by hand. Kasimir is mainly famous for his etchings, but he also produced some oil painting, as well as some pastels. One of his favourite genres was the landscape, or veduta. He demonstrated a predisposition street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York City skyscrapers, to natural wonders like Yosemite Valley. Luigi Kasimir’s etchings...

Vivaldi, Spring

Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Vivaldi, Spring" 1993 in an original etching with hand coloring by noted German artist Jurgen Gorg, b.1951. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered E.A. III/X in pencil by the artist. The plate mark (image) size is 15.5 x 12.5 inches, framed size is 29 x 18 inches. Custom framed in a wooden silver frame, with light grey matting, silver color bevel and red/brown fillet. Gorg began his professional career in 1977 as an artist and printmaker and by 1980, was awarded a special painting prize by the district of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1985, a catalog raisonne was published of Gorg's creations. Gorg's work follows a strong tradition of figurative art with erotic overtones. He interprets his subject matter loosely, keeping his figures open and emphasizing motion through line and contour. A foreword in a book on Gorg's work captures his artistic sensibility: "The predominant subject is the human body: it is the body of a young, slim, beautiful person. The face remains vague, the gestures are those of free motion...

"Haarlem" Aquatint Etching on Paper
By Johnny Friedlaender
Located in Soquel, CA
Bold abstract aquatint by Johnny Friedlaender (Polish-French, 1912-1992). Comprised of two main sections, this piece is full of detail and texture. The upper layer is a reddish tan, whereas the bottom layer is a rich brown. Geometrical shapes are arranged such that they almost form mirror images of each other, but vary enough to create interest and a sense of movement. Signed in the lower right corner. Numbered 56/350 in the lower left corner. Includes original certificate of authenticity. Presented in a new cream mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 42"H x 32"W Paper size: 33.75"H x 24.5"W Johnny Friedlaender was a leading 20th century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer. Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender was born in Pless (Silesia) and his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L 'Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947, he produced the work Reves Cosmiques, and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Stael and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch.
