Large Italian Glazed Terracotta Zebra Statue – Mid-Century, 1960s
Located in Toronto, CA
An exceptional and rare large Italian terracotta zebra sculpture, crafted in the 1960s and evocative of the bold and playful charm of mid-century Italian design. This vintage zebra statue is made from hand-molded terracotta, beautifully glazed in classic black and ivory tones that highlight the animal’s iconic stripes. The sculpture depicts a zebra resting gracefully on the ground, its form stylized yet expressive, with refined contours and a gently turned head that add a serene presence. Heavily influenced by the whimsical and artistic ceramic trends popular in Italy during the mid-20th century, this piece is reminiscent of the decorative animal sculptures produced in regions like Montebello and Deruta, known for their artisanal terracotta and pottery work. The surface features a glossy glaze that enhances the depth of the black and white palette while revealing subtle terracotta tones peeking through in some areas—adding warmth and character. It is a substantial and heavy piece, indicative of its solid terracotta construction. No chips or cracks are present, though there are minor surface marks and glaze imperfections consistent with age and original craftsmanship, which only add to its authentic vintage charm. Whether placed as a statement piece on a console, within a gallery wall, or styled in a maximalist interior, this Italian zebra sculpture...
