Mexican Folk Art Wood Carving Traditional Dance Handmade Alebrije One of a Kind
By Manuel Cruz Prudencio, Ruby Fabian
Located in Queretaro, Queretaro
The young dancers wear an armor of threads over their bodies, showing off an ancient indigenous art form. Colorful thread combinations characterize the huipil dress, a rectangle of cloth handwoven on a backstrap loom that dates back thousands of years in used in Zapotec culture. Through symbols in their dresses, Zapotec women wear their identity, history, culture, power, social and marital status, religion, personality, and power.
In this folkloric dance, “Flor de Piña” (Pineapple Flower), innocence surrounds young girls as they dance and hold pineapples on their shoulders as an offering. Their long braids represent purity and their bare feet symbolize their connection to the Earth.
This folkloric dance is part of the “Guelaguetza” (name in the indigenous Zapotec language) Festival Celebration. Since pre-hispanic times, the indigenous people of Oaxaca have honored the goddess of maize with this festival, performing and offering gifts to ensure a good harvest.
Husband and wife, master woodcarver Manuel Cruz and wood painter...

"Defiant Comanche" Mixed Media Sculpture by Chris Pardell
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original mixed-media sculpture by Christopher Pardell, called "Defiant Comanche". The sculpture was produced in a limited edition by Legends, as number 167 of 950. The sculpture features the bust of Defiant Comanche Quanah Parker and was produced in 1991. The sculpture features the artist's signature "C.A. Pradell" in yellow ink on the font of the base, as well as an inscription of the artist's name on the back of the figure's sash.
Quanah Parker was a war leader of the Quahadi band of the Comanche Nation and a prominent figure in the Red River War. Quanah Parker was never elected chief by his people but was appointed by the federal government as principal chief of the entire Comanche Nation. He became a primary emissary of southwest indigenous Americans to the United States legislature.
Christopher Pardell began sculpting at young age. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington, and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice mold maker position with a statuary company. As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a marquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christopher's exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector.
The sense of tragedy and drama of the Native American has long been an artistic theme of his. "I try to convey the spirit behind the Native American lifestyle. The sculptural nature of Native American dress...

34-Star Civil-War Flag, Celebrating Kansas Statehood, 1861
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Offered is a large 34-star flag, produced during the Civil War. This flag features white double-appliqued hand and machine-sewn stars on a blue canton, along with 13 machine-sewn alternating red and white stripes. The stars are arranged in rows of 7/7/6/7/7 stars. The flag features machine-sewn wool bunting, a linen header, and hand-stitched grommets.
This 34-star flag celebrates Kansas statehood and dates to circa 1861. Kansas was admitted to the Union as the 34th state on January 29th, 1861, which was about a month after states began to secede from the Union and about two-and-a-half months before the first official shots of the American Civil War were fired. The 34th star flag was made official on July 4th of that year and remained the official flag until July 4th, 1863, when the 35-star flag was made official for the admission of West Virginia to the Union.
Even with the secession of states during the American Civil War, the American flag was not officially changed to show a loss of stars. Abraham Lincoln encouraged Americans not to produce flags with fewer stars after states seceded, as he saw great value in remaining a unified body under one flag. The 34-star flag was often referred to as “Lincoln’s flag...
