Bellamy Style Hand-Carved New England Pine Eagle, Early to Mid-20th Century
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original American eagle, hand-carved from pine during the early to mid 20th century. The eagle features a touch of original gilt over yellow sizing with hand-painted highlights, emphasizing the eyes and beak.
The eagle is displayed with both wings fully outstretched. The feathers are expertly detailed, especially considering that this eagle is a single-piece carving.
The eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of the United States. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows in its sinister (left) talon and an olive branch with its dexter (right) talons. Those arrows are tightly aligned, a symbol of "strength in unity" that's found in the traditional cultures everywhere, from the Romans to the Iroquois. In this case, the bundle of arrows were a nod to the unity of the original 13 colonies. The olive branches emphasize the power of peace.
The eagle motif has since appeared in allegorical engravings...

"Instinct" Bronze Sculpture by Mark Hopkins, 1998
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original bronze Western wildlife sculpture by American artist Mark Hopkins. The bronze is titled “Instinct” and depicts two expertly sculpted wolf heads. Using the involved and lengthy method of lost-wax casting, “Instinct” captures the intensity of the wolves’ focused, expressive gazes. Stacked and connected, the sculpture expertly plays with negative space and scale, as a rocky base twists and flows into the chest of the first wolf. The bronze is signed and dated in the mold to the back of one of the wolves.
Artist Mark Hopkins (American, b. 1965 ) is inspired by the majesty of wildlife and mankind's interaction with nature. He creates limited-edition bronzes that evoke “a sense of awe and respect for the mysteries and loveliness of the world around us.” A master of the lost-wax casting tradition, Hopkins’ bronzes have been called “bronze in motion” for their fluid look, which often appears to display natural beauty in defiance of gravity.
Captivated by form and design, Mark has created a signature sculpting style resulting from decades of study. Encouraged by parents and teachers from an early age, Mark's unique talent developed alongside his technical skills of sculpting and casting. As an artist, Mark is constantly challenging himself to render the rich beauty of life and the deep emotion of the human soul into flowing sculptural form, noting "I strive to express beyond the image, to catch spirit, to reveal deeper emotions, and to share joy."
Collectors of his work include Barbara Mandrell, Clint Eastwood, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, George and Barbara Bush and a host of other luminaries and corporations including the National League Association of Baseball Club Owners, the Atlanta National Golf Club, Humana, Coca-Cola and others. Each Mark Hopkins sculpture...

Vintage Hand Carved Wooden Eagle with Shield and Arrows
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a vintage, Bellamy-style, hand carved wooden eagle. This late 19th century to early 20th century wood eagle is bronze-brushed with a painted red, white, and blue shield. It supports a shield in its right talon as the head looks to its left. In its left talon is a bundle of arrows.
When Charles Thomson put together the final design for the Great Seal, he placed a bundle of thirteen arrows in the eagle's left (sinister) talon. The official description specifies the bald eagle holding "in his sinister, a bundle of thirteen arrows." The thirteen arrows are tightly aligned – a symbol of "strength in unity" that's found in the traditional cultures everywhere, from the Romans to the Iroquois— in this case a nod to the unity of the original 13 colonies. The clutched shield has a blue chief. Twenty one alternating red and white stripes complete the shield design.
With carved detailed feathers and a dramatic expression, this stylized eagle is an interesting work of art. The relief carving is styled after John Bellamy, a well known folk artist made popular in the late 19th century for his stylized eagles and ship carvings...

Bronze Eagle After Jules Moigniez, Late 20th Century
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a 20th century bronze sculpture, after Jules Moigniez, of an eagle on a rocky perch. The dignified eagle has its wings lifted and his head turned to the side, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Textured feathers, a rugged branch and rock base, and sharp talons show Moigniez’s artistry at the lost wax process. The bronze sculpture sits atop a marble base.
Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was a French sculptor widely known for his highly detailed bronze works depicting dynamic wildlife. After studying under Paul Cromolera, Moigniez made a name for himself at his first exhibition in 1855 at the Exposition Universelle. Since then, he continued to show his works on a yearly basis. While many artists at the time focused solely on the subject, Moigniez incorporated highly detailed bases to accommodate his various animals. In America and England, his bird sculptures gained massive popularity and he soon became better known for his birds. After Jules Moigniez’s tragic death in 1894, his father continued to cast his son’s bronzes from the foundry he purchased. Just before Moigniez’s father also passed away, he sold the foundry and his casts to Auguste Gouge, who once cast bronzes for Paul Cromolera. Gouge continued to produce Moigniez’s bronze sculptures until just after WWI.
Eagle sculptures, such as this, gained such popularity in America because of the symbolic and historical meanings associated with the elegant bird. The eagle motif has been widely used throughout American history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery was prominent. Since then, the eagle motif has appeared in allegorical engravings...
