From Villa Morra Metelliano in Cortona, Alberto Moravia writes this postcard of greeting and thanks to the Countess Pecci-Blunt, or Mimi, the patron of arts and the closed-friend of artists and intellectuals. The Italian writer thanks her for the wise and pleasant people met during the Parisian stay, at one of the Countess' residences.
The background:
During the period of this correspondence, Moravia has just started his carres as journalist: in 1927, Moravia met Corrado Alvaro and Massimo Bontempelli and they founded the magazine 900. The journal published his first short stories, but his life changed when he published in 1929 Gli Indifferenti, noteced by the critic. He completed over 40 wordless novels in his career, and among these, his greatest is generally said to be Passionate Journey. Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and Otto Nückel. Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as George Walker, Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and New Yorker cartoonist Peter Arno. Masereel's woodcut series, mainly of sociocritical content and expressionistic in form, made Masereel internationally known. Among them were the wordless novels 25 Images of a Man's Passion (1918), Passionate Journey (1919), The Sun (1919), The Idea (1920), Story Without Words (1920), and Landscapes and Voices (1929). At that time Masereel also drew illustrations for famous works of world literature by Thomas Mann, Émile Zola, and Stefan Zweig.

"This is the first, perhaps last Findus, entered into the history of art," writes Vespignani about his only "dead and frozen" still life.
In his humorous writing, he described how, in the 1960s, he wanted to paint an "alive, remembering the sea, wriggling like a freshly caught fish" nature, to distract himself from his "murderous dead". But the result was quite different, contrary to his intentions. Because of his being a "realistic painter, or rather obsessed nerista", portraying the alive nature meant seeing and reproducing the gradual decay of the small group: "from the stage of cheerful youth (...) to the cadaverous dissolution."

Sir Arthur John Gielgud (1904 – 2000)
Sir Arthur Gielgud was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. With Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier, he was one of the trinity of actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century, famous for his voice and his mastery of Shakespearean verse. Regarded by many as the finest Hamlet of his era, and was also known for high comedy roles such as John Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest.
During the 1930s Gielgud was a stage star in the West End and on Broadway, appearing in new works and classics. He began a parallel career as a director, and set up his own company at the Queen's Theatre, London. From the late 1960s he found new plays that suited him, by authors including Alan Bennett, David Storey and Harold Pinter.
