Daring and mysterious, this original gouache from the creative mind of Erté features the sinuous figure of a woman wearing a unique ebony and sanguine body suit with a dramatic wing-like cape. Entitled La dionée dite Gobe-mouches or Venus Flytrap, this work embodies the Art Deco glamour and tongue-in-cheek artistry for which the artist's designs are so beloved. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). The son of a commercial potter in Sebring, Ohio, Viktor Schreckengost learned the craft of sculpting in clay from his father. In the mid-1920s, he enrolled at the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art, or CIA) to study cartoon making, but after seeing an exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art he changed his focus to ceramics. Upon graduation in 1929, he studied ceramics in Vienna, Austria, where he began to build a reputation, not only for his art, but also as a jazz saxophonist. A year later, at the age of 25, he became the youngest faculty member at the CIA. In 1931, Schreckengost won the first of several awards for excellence in ceramics at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and his works were shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, and elsewhere.

Kenneth Stevens MacIntire (1891 - 1979) was active/lived in California, Massachusetts. Kenneth MacIntire is known for Landscape, horse genre, figure, portrait paintings.
He also studied at the Fenway School of Illustration and the New School of Design. To finance his art schooling, he ran a mail boat for the Postal Service, delivering mail to the various Islands in Maine waters. He also got his first taste of the West when he went on a painting trip to the Colorado Rockies in 1922.
After serving in the army in World War I, he opened a studio in Washington D.C.
His work was featured on a House Beautiful magazine cover in 1920. While there he was commissioned to paint a portrait of a beloved family horse. Word spread and he was commissioned to do the same in California. Thus he moved there in 1930, first to Palm Springs, but eventually settling in Hollywood Hills.

Bold nude pastel drawing by Albert Hutson (American, 1923-1994). A woman is reclined on a soft red surface, leaning up against a yellow pillow. The model is skillfully sketched, with quick but confident marks. Hutson has captured the character of the model in her expression and posture, both of which appear relaxed and natural.
Al Hutson retired from military service in 1974, moved to San Francisco, and enrolled in art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1978 he earned his BFA degree with distinction in drawing and painting. His work as a figurative artist was in the medium of pastel drawing, and he had an intense and abiding affinity for works on paper.
Signed, dated, and titled twice in the lower right corner ("Al Hutson Danielle 89")

Albert L. Hutson (American, 1923-1994) had two careers: first as a professional military officer, and second as an artist and member of the Board of the Graphic Arts Council in San Francisco. He was born in 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia, into a family with a long military tradition. His father and maternal grandfather were Annapolis graduates, and his paternal grandfather served in the Civil War. Colonel Hutson graduated from Staunton Military Academy in 1941 shortly after World War II began. He later earned an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Nebraska in the late 1960s. As a young second lieutenant in World War II, he served with the First Armored Division in the Italian Campaign, starting with the Battle of Anzio, and participated in the liberation of Rome. His interest in art began at this time when his commanding officer introduced him to Italian art.
