By Dan May
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Dan May (American, 1955-) Title: "Dog Dreams" *Signed and numbered by May in pencil lower left Year: 1985 Medium: Original Screenprint on unbranded turquoise wove paper Limited edition: 7/75 Printer: the artist May himself, Oakland, CA Publisher: the artist May himself, Oakland, CA Sheet size: 24" x 21.38" Image size: 18" x 18" Condition: Minor edge wear at upper left corner and some minor scuffing to image. In excellent condition Notes: Titled and dated by May in pencil lower right. Biography: Dan May is an American painter and printmaker born on March 11, 1955 in San Francisco, CA. Raised in aesthetic surroundings heavily influenced by his architect father, May grew up learning to view all things with an eye for design, color, and shape. At age 5, he remembers his father cutting up a book of drawings by Henri Matisse and hanging them on the walls of their home. The French master Matisse as well as Richard Diebenkorn and David Hockney are his favorite art influences. He began his first attempts at painting at age 15, and later began to experiment with printmaking, teaching himself various techniques such as woodblock printing, etching, silkscreen printing, and monoprinting. Monoprinting soon became May's medium of choice due to its wide range of expression and spontaneity that he felt other techniques lacked. May - "With monoprinting, you can only work a piece for as a long as the paint stays wet, so the resulting print has a feeling of movement and immediacy. I also like how monoprinting allows the brush strokes to transfer a transparent light quality to the print. For me, this is a technique that bridges drawing...

"Reigning and Roosting" Folk Art inspired linoleum block bird print, deep blue
By Lisa Houck
Located in Wellesley, MA
Lisa Houck is a highly established artist from Boston, recently re-located to Maine, with a very large following devoted to her exceptional paintings, watercolors, mosaics and prints reminiscent of Folk Art, Matisse and Aborigine art. Houck is widely admired and recognized for a gorgeous sense of color and a sensibility both playful and serious that is uniquely her own. This is one of her 3 most recent large format bird prints in various shades of blue and aqua in a series which now consists of a total of 10 related prints. They are outstanding installed individually or as groups. Houck's highly sophisticated and complex sense of pattern and design is delightfully whimsical, as well as extraordinarily compelling for its knowledge of so many artistic forms which the artist is miraculously able to reference and incorporate, while maintaining a style so distinctively recognizable as her own. Lisa Houck "Flittering and Fluttering" 2023 Linoleum Block Print Edition 10 35.25 x 23.25 Inches This print is not framed. Lisa Houck has an outstanding reputation for not only her work as a printmaker but for achievements in painting, watercolor, mosaic and textiles as well. She has executed many large permanent public art commissions for interior and exterior sites in Boston and nationwide including ambitious murals for Dana Farber, The Children's Hospital, Frieda Garcia Park and numerous libraries, playgrounds and other public buildings. Her works have been featured in many museum and gallery exhibitions and are included in a multitude of public and private collections. Artist's Statement: "I work in watercolor, oil on wood, ceramics, mosaics and etching. Each medium allows me to invent new ways to express my view of nature through color and pattern. My artwork has been exhibited widely, and is in numerous public and private collections, including The Boston Athenaeum, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Fidelity Investments, four libraries in Broward County Florida, Hale and Dorr, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston." The Deer, 1942 (Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon, B.336)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Greenwich, CT
The Deer is an aquatint and drypoint print on chine from one of the deluxe copies of Picasso's 1942 Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon series. The image size is 10.5 x 8.15 inches, unsigned as issued, and framed in a contemporary silver and gray moulding. One of about 36 prints that exist with Picasso's remarqued title in French, from the edition of 262 (there were 226 portfolios, some with additional sets on varying papers). Catalogue - Cramer #37 The exceptional etchings from Picasso’s Histoire Naturelle – Textes de Buffon are a masterful combination of sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint, showcasing a full range of gray tonalities. The etchings of animals, birds and insects are considered some of the most beautiful and most unusual examples of Picasso’s graphic work. Roger Lacourière, Picasso’s master printer, pulled the prints for each etching between 1939-1942. It was Lacourière who taught Picasso the sugar-lift aquatint technique which allowed him to mimic the effect of brushstrokes in these etched images. Picasso first explored the technique in his plates for the Vollard Suite, but it was in the creation of the Buffon images that he fully realized its stunning, painterly potential. For the edition, 226 portfolios were produced with the first thirty-six counting as deluxe compilations. These rare deluxe sets were on diverse papers (chine, japon or vergé ancien) and each included a complete additional suite showing Picasso’s title remarques along the bottom. As such, the remarqued versions of the prints are quite rare with just thirty-six of each produced for the edition (with the exception of The Wolf which is never remarqued – the image always fills the entire etching plate). These prints are based on the writings of French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who extensively documented the natural world in his monumental work Histoire Naturelle. Picasso’s association with the project to illustrate parts of the Buffon came during a tumultuous time in European history – the prelude to, and early years of, World War II. As the continent was ravaged, Picasso lived through the disaster in Paris, which the Germans occupied in 1940. These prints could be seen as a political statement – Picasso channeling his artistic expression into a form of resistance art...
