Tall Tales
Located in Santa Fe, NM
hand-finished cast urethan resin 12/20 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Melissa Zink Born 1932 Kansas City, Missouri Died 2009 (aged 76–77) Taos, New Mexico Nationality American Occupation(s) Artist, Sculptor Melissa Zink (1932-2009) was an American artist. An active member of the Taos, New Mexico art scene, she blended storytelling with sculpture, and described the enchantment of books and the imaginary worlds they evoked as the focus of her work.[1] Critics lauded her as a "late bloomer" because she only began to exhibit and sell her multi-media works of ceramics, cast bronze, and collage, when she was in her forties.[2] She became known for her "three-dimensional stories" and "dream-like dioramas" in clay, interior scenes that blend whimsy with surrealism.[2][1] Later she cast large bronze statues of human figures embossed with texts drawn from dictionaries and illuminated manuscripts.[2] In 2001 she won a Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts from the state of New Mexico.[3] In 2021, one of her works featured in a special exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Art entitled, "Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art and the Legacy of Elaine Horwich," which featured a group of artists in the 1970s and 1980s who together launched a movement described as "new Western art" or "Southwest pop".[4] Education and career Melissa Zink was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended the Emma Willard School, Swarthmore College, the University of Chicago, and the Kansas City Art Institute.[5] She later admitted that her professors' efforts to push her and her peers towards abstract expressionism during the 1950s deterred her from pursuing a career in art.[2] Instead she worked for many years by designing picture frames and operating an embroidery and craft shop while continuing to paint and experiment with various media in her free time.[6] In her forties, she married Nelson Zink, who encouraged her to pursue her artistic ambitions. The owner of the Parks Gallery in Taos, which represented her for many years, described her works as aiming to replicate through multi-media art the "book experience, that altered state of consciousness we enter when engrossed in a book."[7] Though known primarily for her clay dioramas and bronze figural sculptures, in later years she also created multi-media, collage wall hangings that incorporated fabrics and painted elements.[1] In 2000 Zink represented New Mexico at an exhibit of women artists called "From the States" held at Washington, D.C.'s National Museum of Women in the Arts.[1] In 2006 the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos staged an exhibition on her work.[8] In 2009, following her death, the Taos Art Museum and Fechin House staged a memorial exhibition entitled, "Melissa Zink: Her Singular World."[9] She featured among leading women artists in the book Exposures: Women & Their Art by Betty Ann...

The Guardian
By Maxine Kim Stussy 1
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Maxine Kim Stussy was a prolific sculptor and painter from the late 1940’s to present. Maxine led an incredibly artistic life traveling the world with her husband at the time, artist Jan Stussy, who headed the art department at UCLA for several decades. Both artists were close associates of Stanton MacDonald Wright, known as one of the greatest American modernist artists, also known as the co creator of the synchronistic movement in the teens with Marcel Duchamp. Maxine was unrestricted by any singular medium; her sculptures took form in wood assemblage, concrete, bronze and unique nail assemblage. Large size seemed natural to her, and she often created figurative sculpture over 7 feet high. The gallery has represented the original sculpture of Maxine Kim Stussy for many years, and this is the first time we have presented any of her original works on 1st Dibs. “The Guardian...

Bronze Sculpture American Modernist Art Stanley Bleifeld Girl with Bass or Cello
By Stanley Bleifeld
Located in Surfside, FL
Retaining a fine patina and in overall good condition. Signed with initials SB. I believe the edition size was 7 But I cannot find a mark. Stanley Bleifeld (1924 – 2011) was an American sculptor. Stanley Bleifeld was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Bleifeld earned bachelor of fine arts, bachelor of science in education and in 1949 a master of fine arts degree in painting at Tyler School of Art of Temple University. After a trip to Rome in 1959 or 1960 he gave up painting for sculpture. He began his fine-art career as a painter. However, a visit to Italy and exposure to the bronzes of Donatello, Michelangelo, and Ghiberti changed his direction He worked with the Art Foundry of Massimo del Chiaro and alongside artists such as Lucchesi, Harry Marinsky, Fernando Botero, Igor Mitoraj and Ivan Theimer. Many of his early pieces were religious subjects, and reflected both painting and sculptural techniques in bas reliefs* that had "liquid landscapes in undulating reliefs and free-flowing portraits reminiscent of classical fragments" (166-167). He later turned from these abstract pieces to more realistic figures in bronze. Bleifeld was a National Academician in Sculpture, and a member of the National Academy of Design, and helped set policy for that organization. He was also President of the National Sculpture Society. Past presidents of the society have included John Quincy Adams Ward, James Earle Fraser, Chester Beach, Wheeler Williams, Leo Friedlander, Neil Estern, and Cecil de Blaquiere Howard. The first woman to gain admission into the NSS was Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, in 1893. She was followed a few years later by Enid Yandell and Bessie Potter Vonnoh in 1898; Janet Scudder in 1904; Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1905 and Evelyn Longman and Abastenia St. Leger Eberle in 1906. In 1946, Richmond Barthé was likely the first African-American to be admitted. In 1994, the NSS held their first exhibition outside the United States at the Palazzo Mediceo Di Seravezza in Italy. Titled “100 Years of the National Sculpture Society of the United States of America in Italy” it ran from the 16th of July through the 4th of September and was curated by Nicky and Stanley Bleifeld along with Costantino Paolicchi, Lodovico Gierut and Paolo Giorgi. Among the 60 notable American sculptors whose work was selected for the exhibition were Stanley Bleifeld, Andrew DeVries, Neil Estern, Leonda Finke...
