A very fine French 19th century brown and parcel-gilt patinated bronze sculpture titled "La Sécurité" (The Security - Protection) after a model by Eugène Delaplanche (French, 1836–1891). Depicting a sitting young Maiden in a gilt-decorated armored suit and helmet, a lion skin on her back, holding a resting child on her arm. Raised on Rouge-Royal marble plinth inscribed "La Sécurité - Par E. Delaplanche - Salon des Beaux-Arts de Paris". Signed: E. Delaplanche and stamped with the importer's seal - Alberto Vignes y Ca - Buenos Aires, circa 1890.

Depth: 14 inches (35.6 cm).
Eugène Delaplanche (February 28, 1836 – January 10, 1891) was a French sculptor, born at Belleville (Seine).
He was a pupil of Duret, gained the Prix de Rome in 1864 (spending 1864-67 at the Villa Medici in Rome) and the medal of honor in 1878. His "Messenger of Love" (1874), "Aurora" (1878), and the "Virgin of the Lillies" (1884), are in the Luxembourg. Other works by him are "Music - La Musique" (1878, Paris Opera House), called his masterpiece; "Eve After the Fall" (1869); "Maternal Instruction" (1875, Square of Sainte-Clothilde, Paris). He is also noted for his decorations in relief on vases of Haviland faience. His best work is naturalistic, but at the same time dignified and simple in line and shows sound mastery of technique. He is represented by 15 works in the Glyptothek, Copenhagen and in many other French museums and in churches.

With much research; I haven’t seen or heard of a similar form by Decorchemont. The original Brooklyn Museum loan sticker is on verso with the Decorchemont stamp on her left cheek. François-Emile Décorchemont French, 1880-1997
François Décorchemont, originally an accomplished painter and potter of recognized ability, turned to the making of glass in 1904. Pâté de verre was the medium in which he excelled and for which he is best known. After studying decorative art in Paris, François Décorchemont returned to his native Conches in 1910 to develop new techniques in stained glass, particularly in the use of crystal to give multicolored and faceted panes. After 1909, while continuing to produce fine glass paste pieces, Francois Decorchemont began to experiment with a new casting technique. François Decorchemont, Emile's son and also an artist, helped out in his father’s studio, in particular helping him to research the possibilities of creating jeweled adornments in pates d'email (enamel pastes) for Gerome's polychrome sculptural creations.
Francois Décorchemont, a potter and painter at the outset of his career, became fascinated with the IDEA of developing and utilizing a thin translucent glass material in his work. It was in essence the revival and an adaptation of a long forgotten Egyptian glass-making process using colored crystal powdered glass, metallic oxides and an adhesive paste. This "new" material, known as pâte de verre was developed around the turn of the century, principally at the Sevres porcelain factory, by a number of artists working there, notably Henri Cros and Albert Dammouse.
The end of the 19th century was an illuminated period in the history of art. Impressionist painting appeared and created an interest in glass as material. Traditional sculpting materials such as bronze and marble made way for glass with its possibilities of light and color. Henry Cros and François Décorchemont became the leaders of French pâte de verre and facilitated the proliferation of this colorful glass. His first major work, in 1934, was inn the Eglise Sainte-Odile near Porte Champerret in Paris, some 300 square meters of brilliant colors. After the war, he devoted his work to churches in the Eure, including of course Beuzeville where, thanks to the generosity of the local council, the church is lit at night so that his work can be admired from outside. During the first half of the 20th century a number of French artists became famous for their work in pâte de verre, and Francois Decorchemont among them. March 2014, 20th Century’s Greatest Art Dealer Felix Marcilhac’s Collection Privee at Sotheby’s - Chang Yi Entrusts Antoine Leperlier in the Bidding of a Francois Decorchemon's Original. This is a very fine casting of La Danse after the original model by Eugene Delaplanche and executed by the Ferdinand Barbedienne foundry in Paris circa 1890-1910. It is titled in Kjellberg's monumental work as Zéphyr and is noted as Fée Aux Fleurs (The Flower Fairy) in Berman's volumes. The sculpture depicts a young nymph as she gracefully spins on a smooth dirt path while her diaphanous dress spins around her body while the the wind catches the bottom and carries it wildly into the breeze.
La Danse was initially exhibited at the Salon of 1886 as no. 3768 in plaster and the following year he exhibited the same model executed as Salon catalogue entry no. 4000, a life-size marble. His final exhibition of the model was it at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889.
The sculpture was cast by Barbedienne in several editions, including 40 cm, 61.5 cm, 97 cm and 115 cm. The present example shows the careful attention of the ciseleur and shows beautiful chasing of the details. An attractive overall medium-golden-brown patina leaves the surface rich and full of life, being overall translucent and glowing throughout. Every detail is vivid, from the flowers and foliage held gently in her fingers, to the wrinkles of these fingers, her perfectly detailed face with a sharp little nose, eyes that are full of laughter and joy and a firm jaw. The naturalistic base is inscribed both "Delaplanche" and "F. Barbedienne Fondeur, Paris" and is numbered 225.
