Biography:
Pino Castagna was born in Castelgomberto, Italy, in 1932, and studied in the schools of fine arts of Verona and Venice. Together with Scottish sculptor Michael Noble and his wife, Ida Borleti, from 1957 and 1963 he designed a creative skill stimulation programme for the mental patients of the Verona psychiatric hospital, as well as directed a ceramics school and workshop in Garda. His growing interest in sculpture was encouraged by frequent visits to Paris and Milan. In 1969, he moved his workshop to Costermano del Garda, Italy, where he currently lives and works. Since then, Castagna’s work has been characterised by constant experimentation with new techniques and materials as diverse as ceramics, aluminium, stone, wood, concrete, strings or tree branches. Each of these offers a new and original expressive possibility, which the artist explores by testing the materials’ plastic potential and pushing their endurance limits. In addition to his practice as sculptor, Castagna’s oeuvre encompasses painting and design, as well as public art, fully revealing the architectural and environmental vocation of his work. Chase Gamblin is an artist primarily working in ceramics. Currently, he is an Academic Specialist and Studio Coordinator for the Ceramics Department at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Gamblin received his BFA in Ceramics at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, TN in 2007. He then studied and received his MFA in Ceramics at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Gamblin traveled nationally and internationally for residencies in Vicchio, Italy (2008), Sanbao, China (2009 and 2012) and University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND (2010-2011), where he also taught as a ceramics visiting lecturer. An early 20th century barro negro or black clay botijo, hand made and signed ROCA CAUS VERDU on the handle, by the famed pottery company, Roca Caus, in the village of Verdú in the Catalan region of Spain, circa 1900. This beautiful utilitarian pot, with its wide belly, top handle, and one mouth where it's filled and one mouth called a pitón or pitorro to drink from, is a traditional porous clay Spanish vessel originally designed to contain water. The botijo is a typical element of Spanish culture and can be found in nearly every rural town and varies in shape, color, and material depending on the area. The Verdú jugs are known for their ability to keep water cool and very fresh because of their porosity. The expression "they always cry" is well known. Today, this antique clay jug can be used as a vase, stand alone conversation piece, or grouped with other pieces of blackware on a table, shelf or kitchen counter.
