Biedermeier Period Academic Life Study Male Nude Carrying A Staff Circa 1826
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Eduard Braun. German ( b.1798 - d.1876 ). Academic Life Study Of A Male Nude Carrying A Staff. Pencil & Charcoal On Paper With Heightening. Annotation (presumably a dedication) Lower Left. Paper size 24 inches x 16.5 inches ( 61cm x 42cm ). Frame size 30.1 inches x 22.2 inches ( 76.5cm x 56.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the German artist Eduard Braun and dates from around 1826. The drawing is presented and supplied in an interesting configuration with a modern twist (which is shown in these photographs). The drawing has been float mounted between two sheets of Tru Vue Museum Glass® UV99 so that the wall or setting behind the hanging is visible and therefore provides the surround for the artwork. This antique drawing is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Eduard Braun. This drawing has a later annotation and presumably a dedication in red ink in the bottom left hand corner. The annotation is the monogram HL within a heart. The configuration of the HL resembles the format used by the French artist Henri Laurens 1885 – 1954 where the downstroke of the L is merged with the second downstroke of the H. This stunning original pencil and charcoal drawing on paper is by a German artist called Eduard Braun. He was born in 1798 and died in 1876, but little else is known about him apart from the fact that he was active in the Paris art salons and rooms. This drawing is from a portfolio by this artist on a similar theme and is typical of the type of academic study undertaken by serious art students throughout the nineteenth century. One of the other drawings in this portfolio is annotated as being created in 1826 and there is every reason to think that this drawing is contemporaneous with that. The drawing is of a very high standard, capturing both strength and sensitivity, showcasing the artist’s ability to reproduce a lifelike image of a nude model. The subject of this drawing is a young man, possibly in his mid-twenties, with a toned and muscular body. He is standing with his weight on his right leg, which is slightly bent, and holding a wooden staff in his right hand. His left foot is raised slightly with the toes pointed, and his left hand is placed behind his back. Although he is facing fully towards the viewer, his gaze is to his left. He has pleasant, serene expression on his face. The background is bare, save for the shadow cast by the model. This original antique drawing...

The house was a treasure-trove of clothes and the sort of beautiful objects that made perfect props. Britt had always been an avid collector of stylish, decorative bits and pieces; Rod had money to spend and took to this new lifestyle with enthusiasm. 19th Century genre historical oil painting of figures at Hardwick Hall
By Laslett John Pott
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Laslett John Pott RSA British, (1837-1898) Bess of Hardwick Receiving Visitors at the High Great Chamber, Hardwick Hall Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1872 Image size: 18.75 inches x 29.5 inches Size including frame: 25.25 inches x 36 inches Provenance: Frost & Reed no. 30819 A wonderful historical painting by Laslett John Pott of figures at a table in the High Great Chamber at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. Two men in Elizabethan costume can be seen standing up to toast a lady as she reclines in a chair holding a fan, whilst a dog watches on. Meanwhile, another woman looks across the table as her seated companion has his glass refilled by a man servant. To the left of the painting, a lute with sheets of music can be seen lying on the ground whilst on the opposite side sits a wine cistern with a bottle next to it. The fashionable dress and bearing of the woman seated on the right indicate a woman of wealth and standing, most likely Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury who built Hardwick Hall in 1590. She was lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth I and one of the wealthiest women in England. She commissioned the architect Robert Smythson to design the house, which included the extraordinary High Great Chamber located on the second floor. Decorated with a plaster frieze depicting Diana the huntress, a large alabaster and marble chimney piece and Brussels tapestries on the lower walls, it was used by the countess to greet and entertain guests. After her death, the property passed to her son William Cavendish 1st Earl of Devonshire in 1608 and later to his great grandson, William who was made the 1st Duke of Devonshire in 1694. In 1959, the property was transferred to the National Trust and most of its original features, including the plaster friezes, chimney piece and tapestries depicted in this painting, can still be seen today. The painting bears an old label for Frost & Reed, no. 30819, with the title ‘Interior of Haddon Hall’ which was wrongly given to the painting at the time. Later research uncovered the correct location as being Hardwick Hall. Pott used Hardwick Hall as the backdrop for a number of his works including: Mary Queen of Scots Being Led to her Execution, His Highness in Disgrace, Waiting for the King’s Favourite and Wayland Smith Showing Amy Robsart her Wedding Dress. Laslett John Pott was a genre and historical painter born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1837, the son of John Manger Pott, and his wife Sophia Charlotte Moss. His father was a successful auctioneer and land valuer and his wealth enabled Pott to receive a good education. Although he showed an early talent for art, his father wanted him to become an architect and at the age of 16 he became an apprentice at a local firm. After his apprenticeship, he was able to persuade his father to let him change careers and enrol at the Bloomsbury Art...

Saint Roch with Saint Jerome + Saint Sebastian - British Edwardian oil painting
By Wilfred Gabriel de Glehn
Located in Hagley, England
This superb religious figurative oil painting is by noted artist Wilfred de Glehn. Although some experts rank de Glehn alongside Sargent, he is considered as something of a late British Renoir, for his deft use of sunlight and shadow. Indeed he was good friends with John Singer Sargent and collaborated with his on some projects. This painting, painted circa 1910 is of three saints, from left to right they are Saint Jerome, Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian. It is based on a work attributed to 16th century artist Alessandro Oliverio. Saint Jerome was a biblical translator and monastic leader and is depicted in red, holding books. Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian were known as the Plague saints - Plague saints offered hope and healing before, during, and after times of plague. A specific style of painting, the plague votive, was considered a talisman for warding off the plague. It portrayed a particular saint as an intercessor between God and the person or persons who commissioned the painting – usually a town, government, lay confraternity, or religious order to atone for the "collective guilt" of the community. Rather than a society depressed and resigned to repeated epidemics, these votives represent people taking positive steps to regain control over their environment. Paintings of Roch represent the confidence in which renaissance worshipers sought to access supernatural aid in overcoming the ravages of the plague. The thirteenth-century Saint Roch (or Rocco), whose death is still commemorated in Italy, is especially invoked against the plague. He attended plague victims in public hospitals in Italy according to traditional accounts of his life.
