Low Tide Coastal Scene Appledore Harbour Devon Watercolour Landscape 1987
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Low Tide Coastal Scene Appledore Harbour Devon Watercolour Landscape 1987 By Tony Herbert (1927-2024) Medium: Watercolor on artists paper Size: 11 x 15 inches Annotated Verso: “Appledore 87” Condition: Very good; paper edges are deckled, with minimal age-related wear. Colours remain clean and fresh. Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work, Oxford, England Description: A peaceful and evocative watercolour landscape by British artist Tony Herbert 1927 to 2024 titled Appledore 87. This coastal painting captures the harbour at Appledore a historic fishing village on the North Devon coast known for its wide tidal estuary and charming maritime architecture. Painted in 1987 the work features a muted palette of soft browns greys and greens reflecting the exposed seabed at low tide with delicate tonal precision. The buildings are rendered with Herbert’s signature economy and architectural sensitivity anchoring the composition while the surrounding mudflats and distant hills suggest atmospheric stillness. The large warehouse like structure may be part of Appledore’s old shipbuilding or fishing infrastructure adding a layer of industrial charm to the otherwise tranquil setting. This piece exemplifies Tony Herbert’s deep affinity for British coastal scenes and his lifelong dedication to plein air watercolour painting. His works are held in private collections across the UK and are increasingly sought after for their subtle charm and observational skill. An ideal choice for collectors of 20th century British watercolours marine art...

Claude Muncaster Cardiff Castle Wales Watercolour painting Mid Century Modern
By Claude Muncaster
Located in London, GB
We acquired a series of paintings from Claude Muncaster's studio. To find more scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this seller." Claude Muncaster (1903-1974) Cardiff Castle Wales Dated May 1962 Signed lower right Watercolour 14x26cm Muncaster's watercolours capture the British countryside feel with great competence and passion. Here the ancient scheduled monument of Cardiff castle is made to feel both grand and imposing, yet reflecting the softness of the countryside. A few elegant motorcars are parked before it. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham. Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn...
