Rare 19th Century Viennese Porcelain Hand-Painted Ice Cream Pail Vases
Located in London, GB
A rare and finely decorated pair of porcelain ice cream pails on stands,
The decoration of the vases is outstanding: the four medallions representing neoclassical mythological scenes of Bacchus, Ceres, Ariadne and Europa surrounded by intricate motives "a grottesca" in vibrant colours and raised gilding.
Fashionable in antiquity, for example in the Pompeian "Third Style", revisited among others in the Renaissance by Raphael in the Logge Vaticane, the "grottesche" acquired renewed popularity in the early 1800, with the extensive decorations for example of Villa Borghese and Palazzo Milzetti in Italy, or the Procuratie Nuove in Venice, formerly the Palazzo Reale. In in the mid XIX century Vienna, the Historismus movement revisited the idea too, an example is the 1862 decoration of newly built Renaissance Style Museum fur Angewandte Kunst.
Our vases are a refined example of fashionable, elegant decoration at work: the ice cream pail was used in the setting up of the dessert display...

French Mid-Century Ceramic Vase by Atelier du Grand Chêne (circa 1950s) - Small
By Le Grand Chêne 1
Located in London, GB
French vintage ceramic vase by Atelier du Grand Chêne (circa 1950s). Painted with the image of a woman whose body conforms to the contour of the piece on one side and, on the other, a tulip whose long stem mimics that of the woman's neck. The ceramic is small in stature but large in charm and, at the same time, possesses a low-key sophistication reflecting the talents of the ceramicists who were initially trained as painters in Paris. The piece is in very good overall condition notwithstanding an almost invisible chip where the body meets the base. Maker's mark on the underside. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.
About the Artist: L'Atelier du Grand Chêne was founded in Vallauris, France in 1948 by Odette Roche-Gourju (1904-1954) and Ljuba Naumovitch (1898-1955). These two painters, trained notably at the Paris Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, turned out to be excellent potters after the war. They set up their pottery near a large oak tree - hence the name 'Le Grand Chêne...

A E Jones. A pair of hand-hammered copper vases with silver teardrop decoration
By Albert Edward Jones
Located in London, GB
A E Jones. A pair of Arts and Crafts hand-hammered copper vases with silver teardrop decorationThe fine silver decoration to the rim and to the teardrop decoration is an egg and dart pattern, the teardrop surmounted with leaf detailing. A E Jones used this fine egg and dart silver detailing often, but what is unusual is that each silver teardrop outlines an actual repoussé teardrop in the copper body of each vase. The base of the vase is stamped with the design number 2466. This number also points to a design by Jesson, Birkett & Co. It seems between 1905 and 1910 A E Jones company started working alongside the firm of Jesson Birkett & Co and it appears that both firms made many of the same designs.Price for the pair.Albert Edward Jones (1878-1954) worked for the church metalworkers, Hardman Powell. He took classes at and was a member of the Birmingham School of Art around 1900-1902 and would have been influenced by Arthur Dixon, Arthur Gaskin, Bernard Cuzner, and Edward R Taylor...

Pair of ‘Neo-Grec’ Style Multipatinated Bronze Amphora Vases
By Ferdinand Levillain, Ferdinand Barbedienne
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Large And Rare Pair of ‘Neo-Grec’ Style Multipatinated Bronze Amphora Vases by Ferdinand Levillain and Ferdinand Barbedienne.
Signed to the cast ‘F. Levillain Fecit 1880’ and ‘F. Barbedienne’.
This large pair of multipatinated vases are of amphora form modelled in the ‘Neo-Grec’ style with trumpet shaped necks and scrolling handles terminating in masks; the vases are raised on circular spreading bases put down on plinths. Each vase is finely ornamented with laurel leaves and garlands to the neck, the main body with a superb banded frieze cast in low relief depicting the Centauromachy.
In the Centauromachy, the Lapiths battle with the Centaurs at the wedding feast of Pirithous. An enduring classical theme linked with the idea of culture versus nature, the Centauromachy was widely depicted in ancient Greece from the Southern Metopes of the Parthenon Freieze to the Temple of Apollo Epikourious at Bassai, it also appears as a subject on numerous Attic vases such as the Ilioupersis krater.
A popular theme for artists from the Renaissance onwards it was depicted by amongst others, Michelangelo, Piero di Cosimo, Luca Signorelli, Sebastiano Ricci...
