An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Elizabeth I English sterling silver seal-top spoon; an addition to our 16th century silver flatware collection.
This exceptional antique Elizabethan sterling seal top spoon* has a pear-shaped bowl to a faceted stem.
The rounded bowl of this impressive antique silver spoon is plain and unembellished, apart from the feature assay mark.
The faceted stem terminates with a knopped circular seal matrix/die bearing the initials 'SPSW'.
The knopped terminal and bowl of the spoon retain the original gilding.
Such 16th century examples in this condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
* Seal top spoons became popular in England in the later 16th and 17th centuries.
NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London, the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event, we are unable to associate a maker to this spoon.

A cockfight is a sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. A very stylish and unusual glazed ceramic handled vase by renowned Italian artist Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011). The rounded bottle shaped vase has a tall funnel neck with a large rounded loop handle attached to one side. The cream coloured body is decorated with run glazes in blue and yellow over a lightly textured purple ground. The vase is signed Fantoni to the base.
Marcello Fantoni was born in Florence in 1915 and studied an Art of Ceramics course at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana from where he graduated as a 'maestro' of art in 1934. In 1936 he established the Fantoni Ceramic studio and produced many unique pieces which quickly found him fame and recognition. His success continued and today his work is represented around the world in all the leading art institutions including among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, Victoria and Albert Museum of London, Museum of Modern Art of Tokyo and Kyoto.
