RARE NURSING VIRGIN FROM THE 14TH CENTURY
ORIGIN : ITALY
PERIOD : 14TH CENTURY
Height : 60 cm
Width : 20,5 cm
Depth : 11 cm
Wood
Seated and in a very maternal position, Mary is wearing a red dress with a long, flowing cloak covering her narrow shoulders and falling down her body, with one side hugging her bust.
Her hair, half hidden under a veil, frames an oval face featuring a high forehead, a long and thin nose, a small mouth with thin lips and half-closed eyes.
Mary is carrying her son, the infant Jesus, who is wrapped in a cloak, in her lap. Jesus is being nursed by his mother, held by her left hand.
This remarkable depiction, imbued with such gentleness, is directly inspired by the iconographic theme of the Virgin and Child in Majesty. It breaks with the hieratic, impassive style of the models from the 12th and 13th centuries, adding a touch of realism. From Virgin Queen, Mary became Virgin Mother.
Linked to the development of the Marian cult, this type of representation, sometimes known as Virgo lactans, Virgin of Milk or Nurturing Virgin, remains extremely rare. This image of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus is an extremely delicate representation of the intimate bond formed...

Benin Bronze Relief Plaque with Two Warriors — Nigeria, Late 19th / Early 20th
Located in PARIS, FR
Bronze relief plaque from the Kingdom of Benin, Nigeria, cast using the traditional lost-wax technique typical of Edo royal workshops.
Depicting two warriors in ceremonial armour, standing side by side and wearing conical headdresses — the symbol of palace rank and military authority.
The background shows interlaced floral motifs representing cosmic order and royal hierarchy.
The brown-green oxidation and natural surface encrustation indicate a long period of ageing consistent with a pre-1920 casting.
Visible casting seams, manual tool marks, and the non-industrial porosity on the reverse confirm traditional Edo craftsmanship rather than later reproductions.
The rectangular perforations along the edges were used to attach the plaque to wooden pillars inside the Royal Palace of Benin City, where such reliefs celebrated the Oba’s lineage and military victories.
Comparable plaques are held in:
The British Museum, London (Af1898,0105.1–3)
Weltmuseum, Vienna (inv. 35.456)
Ethnologisches Museum, Berlin (Benin bronze plaques...

Shells – Irian Jaya Styl
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
This handcrafted tribal trophy skull replica from Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea, is a striking piece of ethnic decor that reflects the ancestral warrior traditions of the Papuan tribes. Made from sculpted resin and adorned with natural feathers, shells, seeds, resin, and beeswax, it authentically reproduces the ceremonial skulls once displayed as symbols of strength and honor.
Each piece is hand-assembled using traditional techniques, with intricate details that evoke both mysticism and cultural depth. The crown of natural feathers, the central shell in the nasal cavity, and the eye sockets filled with organic materials reflect historic embalming rituals.

Carved Amber Figure of Christ
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
This fine amber sculpture depicting Jesus Christ is a very rare object. Exemples of this sort can only be found in Germanic countries.
Already used during Prehistoric times, amber have always fascinated people. Because of the virtues associated with this material amber was carved as amulets and prophylactic ornaments. As an expression of luxury and means amber was also used for adornments and small figures collected by the upper classes.
This fossilized resin was picked on the Baltic Sea shores and soon entered a intense trade system.

French Terracotta Sculpture Nude Woman "Premiere Faute" - by LAMI - Art Nouveau
By Stanislas Lami
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Female nude in terracotta.
Signed "St. Lami" on the base. Stanislas Lami is a French sculptor.
Stamp mark "Terracotta - R. D'ARLY Paris".
This work inspires purity and delicacy.
The sculpture represents a kneeling naked woman, the features are fine and pleasant. The work is neat and delicate. The position of the woman calls for calm and tranquility.
Our terracotta proof is a reduction of Stanislas Lami's marble entitled "Première Faute" which earned him the second medal at the Salon of 1891. The work represents a young woman kneeling, her arms modestly covering her face with closed eyes. At the dawn of the 20th century, this elegant statuette was part of the symbolist movement and announced the Art Nouveau movement.
This beautiful work was included in the second edition of the artist's catalog raisonné.
Related literature:
Grégoire de Thoury, Stanislas Lami (1858-1944), catalog raisonné of sculptures, Paris, 2014, model listed under number FA12.
More widely known for his masterful literary work, Stanilas Lami is an artist as much as a scholarly amateur.
Son of the sculptor Alphonse Lami, grandson of the neoclassical painter Bidauld, son-in-law of the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer, he benefited all his life from an environment favorable to the promotion and commissioning of his written or sculpted works.
While he wrote his famous dictionaries of sculptors of the French School throughout his career, over around forty years, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français between 1882 and 1942.
Wonderful decorative piece.
Beautiful dimensions.
France - Art Nouveau - 1891
Stanislas Lami, born in 1858 in Paris and died in 1944, was a French sculptor and art historian. He is the grandson of landscape painter François-Xavier Bidault and the son of sculptor Alphonse Lami.
Some of his works are kept in museums, especially in Spain. In Paris, at the Musée d'Orsay, there is a marble sculpture of the Danish Dog...
