Pair of Very Decorative French Console Tables, circa 1925
By Armand Albert Rateau
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Pair of French console tables, circa 1925 French art deco wooden rectangular pair of console tables Inlaid marquetery and carving with neoclassical design such as ribbon, stars and columns simulating water jets. Opening with two drawers with ormolu handles, each resting on 4 fluted and carved feet joined with an unusual interlaced entretoise with ondulate shape Italian Marmorean marble tops, each with different veining. circa 1925 In the Style of Armand-Albert Rateau (1882-1938) H 80 cm L 89,5 cm P 32 cm each Armand-Albert Rateau (1882-1938) French designer and decorator: Armand-Albert Rateau was born in 1882 in Paris and died in 1938 at the age of 56. After training at the École Boulle in Paris where he became familiar with wood sculpture, the young man began a career as a draughtsman with Georges Hoentschel. With his various ex-periences, Rateau moves into his own private mansion and creates a company that is only for a small group of wealthy clients. Very quickly, his work met with immense success and he became an emblematic figure of the Art Deco movement which was then in vogue. Armand-Albert Rateau thus received several orders for offices of the French government, foreign em-bassies and renowned companies such as Tiffany & Co. `An important interest in antiquity During a trip in 1914 with a group of friends, Armand-Albert Rateau discovered his passion for antiquity. They discover frescoes on archaeological sites of the 18th century in Pompeii and antique furniture at the museum of Naples. Inspired by this universe, Armand-Albert Rateau produced a number of bronze and carved wood furniture recreating details from the time. He will be asked by Florence and George Blumenthal to design the interior furniture of part of their private mansion in New York. Some of the orders placed with Armand-Albert Rateau also involved the restoration of furniture. The Armand-Albert Rateau style Armand-Albert Rateau’s career was marked in the 1920s by his close collaboration with Jeanne Lanvin. During this period, the designer developed his artistic formula and tried to combine both modern and antique styles. Some of his sketches also include garden-ornaments echoing the designs of Beatrix Farrand...
