Exquisitely hand-crafted in Italy in the early 19th century, this extraordinary one of kind masterpiece originally a prominent altarpiece fixture in a Catholic church, typically displaying a Santo or Jesus altar figure statue inside. Exceptionally executed throughout, parcel gilt polychrome painted, gessoed and carved wood two-piece architectural baldachin form, with dome top vaulted ceiling, raised on eight fluted Corinthian columns, over a shaped platform base with elaborate molded frieze, further raised on integral bracket risers in marbleized faux marble paint decorated finish.
Breathtaking visually striking aesthetic, very fine quality craftsmanship, lavishly decorated with extraordinary detail throughout, even the unseen interior of the dome profusely decorated with the most intricate painstaking hand applied 24k gold leaf ornamentation, the exterior in brillant gilded finish, enhanced by beautifully aged warm rich dark patina!

A superb museum quality example, in overall very good antique condition, especially considering its 200 years old.
Attractive appearance, with nicely aged distressed patina, authentic antique character and charm throughout, including scattered nicks, chips, losses, exposed gesso, fading, acrecetions, possible old touchups and restorations, all expected wear commensurate with age, use, handling and exposure. Overall strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. The floral dome painting likely later. Central hole and discoloration where altar figure was once placed. Overall a truly remarkable work of art!

This armour is decorated with blank embossed bands contrasting against a blackened ground. It comprises a burgonet helmet with two cheek pieces, a gorget of two plates hinged with a turning rivet at the right side and closed by a sliding rivet at the opposite, two spaulders of six lames each, a breast plate, a back plate, and two tassets of six lames respectively. On the inner side of the breast plate there is the inventory number 41 in white paint and “X4” which repeats on the tassets and on the inner side of the gorget.
Background:
The present armour is an example for the corselet typically used by pikemen on European battlefields of the early 17th century. Shaping large squares accompanied by groups of musketeers they formed a deadly wall insurmountable for the cavalry. An intereresting source illustrating the use of pikes and muskettes is the famous work by Jacob de Gheyn written back in 1607: The Excercise of Armes for Calivres, Muskettes and Pikes. Intended as an educational drill book for soldiers it shows the manner in which contemporary pikemen were outfitted. As the book spread all over Europe, its influence on the military strategies was immense.
Half armours such as the present piece were preserved in arsenals like the Landeszeughaus Graz in Austria, the Zeughaus Solothurn in Swizzerland or the city arsenal of Emden in Northern Germany, all being museums today. In the 19th and early 20th century some of these institutions sold parts of their inventory since the interest in collecting antique arms...

Miniature cannons served a variety of functions. Some were constructed by gun founders in order to advertise their abilities to prospective clients. Other examples owned by young princes were used to fight mock battles as part of their education for becoming future military leaders. Finally, a third group of cannons served to deliver salutes, both among military circles and for entertaining purposes. Due to its elaborate design it can be assumed that this example was ordered for the amusement of the nobility.
