This group of four works by Joan Miro was created as a larger series for the publication of Vol. One & Vol Two in a group of original works setting out his then current material. The works were published by Michel Leiris & Fernand Mourlot in 1972. This set appears in the Miro Catalog raisonne which was published by Meight and done in Paris. Miro a Spanish born Catalonia artist has an international reputation in the art field and is most often associated with the Surrealist and Dada moments. Born in 1893 just in time to be influenced by the rapid changes in the modern world. He was educated at Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Llatja , He had his first one man show in Barcelona in 1918 . Shortly afterwards he moved to Paris and used the time to complete works begun in Spain but with a decided move towards a more personal style. By 1924 Miro joined the surrealists movement headed by Andre Breton. This intense period in his life was devoted to the further refinement of his work creating a less chaotic more formal style. These works would later be called his dream paintings and would firmly place Miro as one of the most important modern painters By 1931 Pierre Matisse opened a new gallery in New York City and began representing Miro in this country. Matisse' s almost constant promotion and representation of Miro' s work resulted in his art being a major influence in the american modern art movement. He received the grand price at the Venice Biennial in 1954 then was awarded the Guggenheim International award in 1958.
