"I know 2 things from photographing hyenas. The first is that they have a few idiosyncrasies - they run funny, smell funny and with their oversized heads and large ears, they look dead funny too. Maybe they are just laughing at themselves - a good sign in any mammal.
I don't actually think many of us really know exactly what hyenas look like because, they are the least photographed of all the storied animals in Africa. We are not familiar with them as we don’t revere them - indeed to be called a hyena, has become a term of abuse, which seems rather unfair on a species that adds to the rich fauna of sub-Saharan Africa. Hyenas are clearly useful additions to animated films and musicals as they can be demonised and portrayed as the bad guys.
But here is the other thing about hyenas which slightly plays towards their stereotyping of being the villains - they don't respect camera equipment...

Lawrence Schiller is an American producer, screenwriter, and photographer best known for his candid photos of Marilyn Monroe. For almost 35 years, Schiller collaborated with Norman Mailer to create several films together, including Executioner's Song (1982), for which Mailer received the Pulitzer Prize. “I never considered myself a good photographer. I still don't,” he has said. “I thought of myself as a hard worker. My camera was a sponge and I had an instinct that athletes have—anticipation.” Born on December 28, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, was raised in San Diego and attended Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. "Of course, we have worked in this room many times before and I know my light, my angles and the minimal depth of focus. We called last year’s photograph of the mountain men at the bar “The Usual Suspects” as that is exactly what they were. Some of those men rarely leave the warmth of The Pioneer Bar in Virginia City throughout winter - in fact they hibernate there. It proved such a popular image and has sold out across the world - in some cases raising huge sums for charity.
So, when we went back this year, we thought it would be fun to have an additional crew member - Cindy Crawford. The word juxtaposition is over used in narrative, but I think we can get away with it here. The old boys may drink a bit and smoke a bit of weed, but they were on their very best behaviour that day - which is essentially still medieval. An international icon joining their party was not something they bargained for and at least one cowboy convinced himself it was the weed. We had to call the image “The Unusual Suspects...

"I took this early on in the trip and I kept referring back to it because it has character and the lead players are pin sharp. Penguins head on offer a different perspective and a ground position - as always - adds stature to the subject. There was no depth of field available that day and the vast majority of the images were cluttered and messy – except, thankfully, this one.

"The first time that I set foot in Montana, I knew I was in a very special place. It was not just the majesty of the scenery, it was the characters that lived there. I have long had a visceral attraction to the Wild West and no State embodies the final frontier of America more than Montana. In the hills in the winter, there is a sense of timelessness. The clock seemingly stopped about 100 years ago.
We have spent the last few years networking in a village in the mountains. I have been there seven times and we have invested emotionally as well as financially in order to be able to tell stories with the camera. This week – on Robbie Burns night – appropriately enough – we had our reward. There was no point attempting this without a solid base of locals that genuinely wanted to help.
I know this bar in the mountains inside out and the locals know me. Everyone wanted a role
in the shoot, but we had to be selective. I wanted ex-convicts, wolf wranglers, wannabe Davey Crocketts and crazy old mountain men that are drunk by 11 am. But it needed more – the barmaid had to have the right look – as she would be pivotal to the image – as would the chosen mountain man. It would be a key juxtaposition. I found the girl – Roxanna Redfoot (what a name) – from Dallas and she was brilliant.
I knew I could rely on the wolf – I have worked with him before and so long as he didn’t lose interest, I had a chance. But there is no light in the bar – so it is all seat-of-the-pants stuff technically – there was no margin for error in focus. A flash gun would destroy the emotion and sense of place.
As I expected, most of the photographs were not sharp or someone messed up (including me). The composition, however, was always bang on, I just needed one stroke of luck – 1/125th
of a second that would capture Montana. I think we nailed it! “The Usual Suspects...

This mother and child were much easier to work with than the big male. She seemed largely comfortable with our presence. My instinct was to work with my “go to” 58mm lens and set the camera for as much detail as possible. The trick was to be in the water and to make myself look small and unthreatening (harder now than it once was!).
But I needed some protection because on the way up river we had noticed several crocodiles and I am terrified of crocs. They could have been anywhere, skulking in the water reeds, but after some manoeuvring, the two motor boats formed a V shape and blocked off the water behind and to the left and right of me. It was only later that our lead guide told me, with a mischievous grin, that there had been a recent crocodile attack...

When Lawrence Schiller got the assignment from the French magazine Paris Match to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the 20th century Fox set of Something’s Got To Give, he thought nothing of it. It wasn’t to be a private, studio shoot. He wasn’t going to set up lights, create backgrounds, use a tripod. Just another assignment, he figured. "This is a simple image – but its vastness lends it a biblical character – therein lies the joy of the dry lake at Amboseli. It is an arid, raw and elemental amphitheater, without equal as a canvas on which to film in Africa. These lake crossings are rarer now as the ecosystem has changed, largely due to the influx of the Maasai and their cattle. The one constant in Africa is that there is never inertia – habitat changes and animal and human behavior changes with it. It is the random walk of life.
As a result of the poor accord between cattle and elephants, there are not many cameras that have had this awesome scene in their line of fire over the last three years and I consider myself privileged. Equally, I have put in the time and know the area as well as any film maker. Looking at my notes, I have been on this lake on 47 occasions in the last three years and this is the biggest herd that has crossed during my visits. When our look out scouts saw the opportunity, we reacted very quickly. I don’t think that my guide and friend – Juma Wanyama – has ever driven quicker from base to the lake.
I think that big pictures need either transcending content that engages across much of the print, or the use of space to create a distinct sense of place. The Crossing...

"About a month ago when I was working out of our studio in Los Angeles, I was in need of a serious haircut. It was a baking hot day and in the interests of time, I thought I could combine it with a supply trip to Samy’s Camera in West Hollywood, which is located on Fairfax. Google quickly threw out a good number of suggestions as to who could undertake the 20 minutes of perfunctory scissor work - which was no real surprise as Fairfax is the embodiment of contemporary hipster culture and barbers are very “now”. I found myself being directed to an established called “The Proper Barbershop” five minutes from Samy’s.
Google has never done me such a big favour. As soon as I arrived, I realised that I had been directed to a jewel of a location. The shop was a museum to LA popular culture from the last 40 years - almost no wall space had been spared - the 1920’s barber chairs from Chicago were surrounded by a visual palette as strong as I had seen in any room for some time. The commercial proposition of dudes cutting the hair of people that aspire to be dudes has legs in 2018 and here in front of me - by pure chance - was a category killer barber.
The chairs were all full and they had no room for me - indeed, they are full every day and so it become clear that The Proper Barbershop
is a West Hollywood institution. Just like the leading restaurants on Melrose a mile to the west, walk in customers are almost always turned away.
The destination is hard core - half empty whisky and tequila bottles fight for space with hair product (and generally win that battle). Meanwhile, most of the stylists are covered from the head down in tattoos, whilst the loo is decorated exclusively in heterosexual porn photos. One of the prominent artists in the shots is indeed the wife of the senior stylist - something good customers find out. The barber is something of a monument to the intense liberalism that is integral to the West Hollywood way of life. It may only be 20 minutes from Beverly Hills, but this part of LA, dances to a very different beat.
I came home with no change to my middle-aged hair, but the seeds of an idea that evolved with every glass of scotch that night. There was a chance, if I could persuade Vinnie, the owner, to give me access, to capture a powerful staged image of this authentic and symbolic location, but it would need a great deal of planning for me not to let the location down. Earlier this year, I took the shot “The Usual Suspects” in a bar in Montana, and the success of the image fuelled my creative courage. The two venues shared similarities not just in the shape and low lighting of the room, but also in that they were both home to people that lend themselves to stylisation.
The next day, I took my production team and my daughter - Jade - to the location (although I spared her a tour of the loo). They all immediately recognised the opportunity and I knew then I had no choice but to cancel existing plans to focus on this project. That’s the way this gig goes, I guess. It’s like a dog with a bone - you see something that is visually transcending and there is an urge to act immediately - not to wait six weeks or even six months. I am not sure whether spontaneity is always a good thing, but when it happens, it tends to be a very powerful emotion.
Happily, Vinnie was keen to collaborate - although it was clear that we would have to close the barbers down for a day and that this would not be cheap as his stylists can each take over $600 a day.
I knew I needed characters in the image that would highlight the vibrant culture of LA and the hipster vibe of Fairfax. The Compton Cowboys were a starting point - and I knew from the huge success of the 2017 Guinness advert, that they could work with the camera. I thought a 1970’s roller blading disco girl...
