Vintage American Navajo Area Rug in Medallion Pattern in Ivory, Black, Burgundy
Located in Barrington, IL
This vintage Native American Navajo area rug, woven circa the mid-20th century, features a striking triple medallion pattern set against a clean ivory background. Bold red, burgundy, and black motifs form the medallions, framed elegantly by narrow border stripes at each end in coordinating burgundy and black.
Expertly flat woven in wool on a traditional cotton foundation, this rug reflects the skill and cultural heritage of Navajo weavers, who use natural organic dyes sourced from the landscapes around their tribal lands. The result is a beautifully rich color palette that remains vibrant and timeless.
The geometric designs and symbolic patterns in Navajo rugs are deeply meaningful, often representing spiritual beliefs, storytelling traditions, and a connection to nature. This piece can be displayed as a decorative rug, wall hanging, or collector’s textile, bringing authenticity and Southwestern charm to any space.
Dimensions: 19” x 40”
Date of Manufacture: 3rd Quarter of the 1900s
Place of Origin: Southwest, United States

b. 1966, d. 2023
Bio:
Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years.

An American Civil War Era African American Southern Quilt
Located in Barrington, IL
This extraordinary hand-stitched quilt, dating to the American Civil War era (circa 1860–1870), originates from the deep South—likely Alabama or Georgia—and stands as a powerful example of African American folk artistry during one of the most pivotal periods in American history.
Crafted from wool and homespun blankets, the quilt features a striking design of diagonally pieced squares composed of repurposed clothing in shades of navy, brown, red, and gray. These textiles are believed to be remnants of garments worn during the Civil War, transformed through necessity and creativity into a work of enduring beauty and cultural significance. The back of the quilt is made from a bold red and gray striped textile, adding a distinctive visual contrast.
Quilts like this—made by African Americans in the Reconstruction-era South—are exceedingly rare and deeply meaningful. They embody both resilience and resourcefulness, and serve as powerful expressions of heritage, survival, and artistic identity.
This particular quilt comes from the collection of a Civil Rights attorney who has spent decades practicing in Alabama and Georgia, with a devoted interest in preserving African American folk art from the Civil War era. Its provenance adds another layer of depth and historical significance.
Dimensions: 63” x 73”
Date of Manufacture: 3rd Quarter of the 1800s
Place of Origin: Alabama, United States
Material: Cotton, wool

Chinese Chiseled Stone Trough, circa 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Once used on a Provincial Chinese farm to hold water or animal feed, this early 20th century stone trough is celebrated today for its organic form and rustic authenticity. hand carved from solid limestone, this shallow rectangular trough exists on a slight tilt, exaggerated by its asymmetrical form. The trough has a rectangular form, carved with a shallow basin, rounded underside, and chiseled surface texture.
The rim of the trough curves up and down in a wave-like pattern, softened by the touch of many hands over the years. The surface of the stone has weathered with time, resulting in natural erosion and neutral color variation. A drainage hole is carved into one side, making the large trough...
