"Matte Red Kimono, " Steel Sculpture by Gordon Chandler
By Gordon Chandler

Flattened with the center portion rolled out, this discarded barrel takes on the look of a traditional kimono...

"Ghost (Big Wings)" Mosaic by Toyoharu Kii
By Toyoharu Kii
Located in Chicago, IL
Intricate, ethereal and highly textured, the abstract compositions of Japanese mosaic artist Toyoharu Kii reflect a sophisticated approach to the technical art of mosaic making. Classically trained in Florence, Italy, Kii creates his modern mosaics using traditional techniques and materials, including hand-cut Italian marble and Venetian smalti glass. Eschewing the figural in favor of the abstract, his mosaics rely on contrasts of pattern and form to convey complex themes and achieve visual harmony. Toyoharu Kii’s latest body of work “Geophytes” continues themes of rebirth and renewal. A reference to plants that regrow from hidden elements beneath the earth’s surface, the series celebrates the resilience of the natural world. Each mosaic is imagined as a landscape that documents a history of environmental damage due to human activity, and the subsequent return of nature as a restorative force. Through the juxtaposition of patterns and the interplay of order and disorder, Kii creates man-made “images of destruction” and finds hope in the future by “reconstructing nature.” In this mosaic entitled "Ghost (Big Wings)," Kii takes a more representational approach to his storytelling, creating figurative drawings out of thin lines of tesserae. The mosaic belongs to his “Ghost” triptych, wherein Kii uses “wings” to represent the presence of a heavenly being, the ghosts of past spirits or the presence of an angel or guardian. In “Ghost (Big Wings),” Kii mourns the extinction of many creatures due to environmental change and imagines their lonely spirits wandering the earth. Enveloping their silhouettes is “a bird with big wings,” writes Kii, depicted here within a dense mosaic of abstract patterns, a symbol for nature’s healing power. “The bird consoles...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, circa 1880s
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck. This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. We love the painting's close attention to detail and the glimpse it offers of Qing-dynasty interiors - from the carved apron of the marble-top table to the red silk lotus slippers...

Vintage Persian Shahsavan Soumak Saddle Blanket in Terracotta, Ivory, Green
Located in Barrington, IL
This beautiful Soumak horse blanket from Northwest Persia is a captivating example of tribal weaving—where artistry, utility, and cultural storytelling converge. Woven over a century ago, this piece features a free-form design that reflects not only the weaver’s creative spirit but also the natural and social world in which they lived. Each element woven into this textile speaks of a life deeply rooted in tradition, movement, and survival. Originally created for functional use—as a horse blanket, saddlebag, or part of a mafrash (bedding bag)—this piece now carries forward its legacy as a decorative artifact full of meaning and authenticity. With its rich textures, handwoven Soumak technique, and tribal motifs, it invites the viewer on a journey to distant lands, evoking the rhythms of nomadic life and the enduring artistry of Persian village and tribal cultures. Today, what once served a utilitarian purpose has become a timeless design element—adding character, history, and warmth to interiors ranging from bohemian and eclectic to traditional and rustic. Dimensions: 3’ 3” x 4’ 4” Date of Manufacture: 2nd Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Persia Material: Wool pile on a wool foundation with organic vegetable dyes Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU 1058 Decorative horse blanket, Collectible Persian tribal art, Antique tribal wall hanging...
