Italian Carved Walnut Chairs with Leather Covers, Milan, circa 1750
Located in Milano, IT
Four carved walnut chairs with leather covers Milan, circa 1750 They measure: 39.37” high, 18.30” to the seat, 21.65” deep x 19.29” (100 cm high, 46.5 cm to the seat, 55 cm deep x 49 cm) State of conservation: - the leather covers are not original; - some signs of use, especially on leather covers; - the rocailles at the height of the backrests have lost part of the carved elements. The four walnut chairs have a mixtilinear structure adorned with rocaille relief carvings; the legs are shaped and end with a curl. The backs and seats are padded and covered with impressed leather with figures and cartouche decorations from later production. Around the mid-eighteenth century in Milan it was very popular to cover seats with impressed leather. Mutton or cowhide was used which, suitably tanned, was then worked with heated irons (hot decoration) or with carved wooden molds (cold decoration). These were impressed on the leather until obtaining a darker brown color. Our group of chairs...

Carlo Ratti Set of Four Chairs in Plywood by Società Compensati Curvi 1950s
By Carlo Ratti, Società Compensati Curvati
Located in Cascina, Pisa
Set of four dining chairs with a frame in black lacquered metal and seat in curved plywood, attributed to Carlo Ratti and produced by Società Compensati Curvati in the 1950s. In Italy, at the beginning of the XX century, industries of curved solid wood arose under license of Michael Thonet, and through the International Exhibitions the processing of curved wood became more and more widespread. The Expo of the first decade was also attended by the wood manufacturers of Monza, while in 1905 Otto Helzer, in Switzerland, patented wooden structures in curved laminated, whose strength was equivalent to those in steel. The Ratti brothers of Monza took their cue from the solid wood laminate to create furniture that, instead of wooden elements, used sheets of wood. The brothers Ratti, Carlo and Mario, also began to follow the young artistic avant-gardes (cubism, futurism and abstractionism). The mastery of wooden sculpture influenced Carlo in the design and realization of furniture of fine neo-plastic artistic workmanship and decò, receiving honors from the Prince of Piedmont Umberto di Savoia. In 1919, in Milan, the first Lombard Exhibition of Decorative Arts was set up (later to become the Triennale) and the Ratti brothers exhibited their furniture in solid wood but also in curved panel with a new system of curvature, the one in Telo. The canvas system was developed by the Ratti brothers with the help of a friend, Cesare Cantù. They developed an elastomer bag in which the mould was inserted with the panel to be bent and, closing it with clamps, the air inside was removed, thus making the panel adhere to the mould. Carlo and Mario found in the Telo system a means by which they could make objects and furniture in the three spatial directions with large surface curvatures, without limits of thickness and minimum radii of curvature. In 1921 in Stuttgart the first Salone del Mobile was inaugurated and the Fratelli Ratti of Monza made itself known internationally by presenting solid wood furniture and also furniture in load-bearing plywood, flanked by furniture with framed and interchangeable covers. The Expo became meeting places to verify and present the novelties in the furniture and industrialization sector and, with the development of Industrial Design, the first architects joined in the design of the furniture industries. The Ratti Brothers, in the various international and national exhibitions, also presented incredible objects in their realization with the system in Telo. After 1930 Carlo and Mario produced many containers for radio and folding chairs for cinema but in 1939 they divided and in Monza Mario remained who, with his sons Antonio and Angela, formed the Società Compensati Curvi...

Meridiana Chair in Transparent by Christophe Pillet for Driade
By Christophe Pillet, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The Meridiana table stems from the ultimate globetrotter chair, revised this year with solid wooden legs. An archetype of the coffee shop or domestic table, it displays a precious balance between the round, wood particleboard top and the solid wood frame and legs. A mass-colored clay mixture is smoothed over the top by hand with a scraper. The table’s aesthetic is distinguished by the shaded, handmade finish of its top. Available in the following colors: Volcano red, Lava black and Champagne. Born in 1959, he graduated from the Academy of Decorative Arts in Nice in 1985 and a year later took a post-graduate course at the Domus Academy in Milan. From 1986 to 1988 he worked with Martine Bedin in Milan, and from 1988 to 1993 with Philippe Starck in Paris. His first items of furniture, issued by XO, date from 1991. Since May 1993 he has been working as an independent designer. His work ranges from furniture to product design, from interior design to architecture and exhibit design. He works, among others, with Artelano, Cappellini, Ceccotti, JC Decaux, Driade, Mazzega, Moroso, Trussardi, Daum, Moët e Chandon, Ecart International, Lacoste Lancome, l’Oreal, Shiseido, Whirlpool. Nominated Creator of the Year in 1995, he has exhibited his works at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lucerne and at many other prestige venues. Among his most recent works or works in progress...

Set of 2 Aluminium Chair EA108 by Charles and Ray Eames  for ICF, 1960s
By ICF Group, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Padova, IT
True icons of twentieth century design, the seats of the Aluminum Group series were designed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s and were first created in 1958, defining what is still the standard for meeting chairs today. A clean and visible structure, which combines the stability and lightness of aluminum with the comfort of a covering - in leather, fabric or mesh - which, being kept taut only by fixing to the sides, becomes an integral part of the joint. With an extraordinary sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned...

Set of Six Italian Vintage Chairs in Wood and Dark Green Leather
Located in Milano, IT
Lovely set composed of six wooden chairs designed in the 50's, of fine Italian manufacture. The structure of the chairs is linear, with four supporting legs, with a pointed shape, while the back is straight with a slightly curved cut of the wood. The chairs are entirely made of light wood in the frame, while dark green leather in the seat. The seat and back are connected: in fact, the leather upholstery rises from the seat to the middle of the back, giving a unique touch to the seat. The leather is fixed to the structure by means of round brass studs in patina, typically vintage. Another peculiarity of the chair is the shape of the top of the backrest, which sees the woodwork at the two ends create two soft indentations, while the middle part goes down more, creating a beautiful ornament. The shape of the chair seat is also peculiar, as towards the outside it becomes more pointed and the wood also tapers, while going towards the center of the seat the wood is thicker and strengthened. The chairs are very beautiful and are ideal for furnishing vintage...
