Ararat Rugs Dragon Rug, Antique Caucasian Revival Carpet, Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
There has long been a fascination with the symbolism of the dragon and its depiction in carpet weavings. The design of ‘Dragon’ carpets consists of a field pattern composed of different colored overlaid lattices formed of pointed, serrated leaves creating intersecting lozenges, which alternately contain palmettes and are flanked by confronting stylized dragons, birds, or animal figures. The most archaic of the ‘Dragon’ carpets include dragon motifs with birds and running animals relatively naturalistically drawn, which stand either alone or in confronting pairs facing a tree. It has been suggested that the earliest examples of the Caucasian ‘Dragon’ carpets...

Ararat Rugs Transilvanian Ushak Prayer Rug Anatolian Revival Carpet Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
Carpets called Siebenburgen or Transylvanian are those which have been found in the Protestant churches of Siebenburgen. Some of them carry a label on the back stating where, when and by whom the piece has been donated to the church. Siebenbürgen/Transylvania is an area between the South and the East Carpathian and West Siebenbürgen mountains in Romania. In 1541 the area came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and became a Turkish protectorate of the principality of Transylvania. Legend has it that Suleiman ‘the magnificent’ sent his vizier with the gift of a beautiful carpet to the Black Church...

Contemporary Japanese Blue Gray Gold Porcelain Matcha Tea Cup by Master Artist
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Japanese contemporary porcelain tea cup/matcha cup, hand painted in blue underglaze in stunning shades of blue and gray on an elegantly shaped ovoid porcelain body, a signed piece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita tradition. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. This artist is the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique signature gold and platinum work on porcelain. His profile is available upon request. This stunning porcelain Japanese matcha tea cup depicts elegant gold fish in soft shades of blue, decorated with gold swimming all around the body of the vase, the intricate wave pattern indicates that the fish are swimming in the ocean. Two bands of exquisite floral patterns decorate the top of the vase all the way to the rim, to add another layer of interest to this piece. “Fired-on gold,” this artist’s signature style, highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. This artist's profile is available upon request. This hand-painted porcelain Japanese tea cup...

Ararat Rugs Carpet with Two Medallions 18th Century Revival Rug Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
This is a dual medallion as the main element of the design of 18th-century carpet from the Konya region, Central Anatolia area of Turkey. Rugs of this type, using two medallions, appear frequently in 15th-century paintings of both the Venetian and the Flemish schools. This pattern tradition survived into the 18th and even into the 19th century in Anatolian village rugs of which this is an exceptionally powerful example. The two octagons that fill almost all of the field enclose a small octagon in the center from which radiate rectangular panels in a star-like fashion, filled with “latch-hook” patterns. Typical two medallions central octagon carpets...
