DeVilbiss Purfume Art Deco Poster by George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company

This beautiful Art Deco poster was realized by the esteemed American Artist George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company in 1926. The work is an advertisement for DeVilbiss Perfume, which depicts a "Petty Girl" (as they came to be known) in the center of the composition floating in a pentagonal black color block. With short cropped silvery white hair and red lipstick, the female figure in center (suggestive of a stylized flapper) squeezes the atomizer of her perfume bottle misting herself in fragrance. Skyscraper style geometric forms suggesting elaborately faceted gemstones- in hues of rose, lavender, orange sapphire and yellow diamond- explode around her, suggesting the stage design for the set of the iconic film "Metropolis". The top of the composition features a bronze color block reading "DeVilbiss Perfume sprays" and in scrolling Deco lettering text reads “A drop of perfume bursting into myriad atoms of fragrance makes the use of perfume an added delight” near the bottom of the piece. Additionally, there is a solid black color block with crystalline black forms emanating outwards at the base of the composition, as well as a geometric abstract form on the right side of the piece imbuing it with a distinctly modernist inflection. With its quintessentially Art Deco sensibility, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of the period as well as those with a distinct appreciation for unusual (and stunning) fine art pieces. its vibrant palate and clean modernist lines make this piece a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Deco to contemporary. The piece comes presented in a custom gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition.
George Petty was an American illustrator known for his series of pin-ups known as "Petty Girls" which he created for Esquire magazine. The Petty Girl were coquettish women whose legs were elongated to create idealized female forms. They were featured on magazine centerfolds, billboards, and calendars for companies such as Ridgid Tools. Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), well known for his American impressionist paintings, produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. While a teenager his fascination with drawing and birding developed simultaneously and continued throughout his life.
His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years.

John Marin (1870-1953), Downtown, The El, etching, 1921, signed in pencil lower left (also signed and dated in the plate). Reference: Zigrosser 134, only state. Published initially by Alfred Stieglitz and then included as part of the Folio of American Etchings by the magazine The New Republic in 1924, in an edition of unknown size but probably above 500. In very good condition, the full sheet, on Van Gelder wove paper, 6 3/4 x 8 3/4, the sheet 11 x 13 3/4 inches.

A fine bright impression.
Initially the New Republic Set, sometimes known as Six American Etchings, contained Marin’s Brooklyn Bridge No. 6 (Swaying) (Zigrosser 112). But after a small number of sets were completed, Downtown the El was substituted for Zigrosser 112 (and so the number of Downtown The Els in the set would have been a bit fewer than the others in the set). Zigrosser, who apparently had not seen a complete set at the time he created the catalogue raisonne, conjectured that the substitution might have been because the original plate was damaged. But since the printer, Peter Platt, was the most renowned artist’s printer of his time, and worked alone, it is unlikely that he would have damaged the plate; a more likely possibility is that he switched to a print that was more comparable in size to the others in the set (The Brooklyn Bridge print...

Baseball Game: realist large-scale black and white drawing of sports game

This print depicts a baseball game mid-play. An umpire crouches with his hand up, and the batter stands poised. In the lower right, spectators peer onto the field. The awning of the stadium, silhouetted in black, cuts lines across the top of the composition, rising over a hillside crowded with homes. This finely-drawn lithograph features Zalopany's characteristic mastery of light and shadow, from the delicate texture of the field, to the spectators backlit in shadow.
The composition of Baseball Game was taken from a page in an old picture book, depicting a downtown section of Caracas, Venezuela that is home to a number of Art Deco buildings, all built in the 1950's. Found images are a regular inspiration for Zalopany's large-scale realism. This print calls additionally on Zalopany's regular depiction of nature contrasted with the man-made: here, a behemoth stadium rises beside rolling hills, themselves punctuated with more buildings than trees. This contrast is enhanced by the use of textured, delicate handmade paper, which lends warmth to this dramatic black-and-white drawing.
