A collection of 40+ items (including approx 30 club invitations) spanning the history of the seminal 1980s New York nightclub known as "Area".
Area opened its doors in September 1983 and virtually overnight became the nexus of one of the most vibrant Downtown art and club scenes in New York. Every six weeks, they transformed the enormous space at 157 Hudson with a different art exhibit & performance theme. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. & many others went to see and be seen: A place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Area's wildly creative invitations became the hottest tickets in town and instantly collectible art in and of themselves. Further details:
Comprised of 40+ items in total: approx 30 club invitations; 3 original darkroom photographs taken by & signed by Fernando Natalici - the art designer of each piece; 6 drink tickets; 2 original mailing envelopes; a Halloween handkerchief invite; plus an original advertisement proof for the 80s fashion publication Details Magazine (image 4).
Invitation dimensions ranging from: 9.5 inches on the longest side to 3.5 inches on the shortest side + 1 invite folding out to 11x17 inches (image 8). 3 signed silver gelatin photographs measuring: 8x10 inches (2 works) & 5x7 inches (1 work); Ad proof (image 4): 11x15 inches.
Most pieces generally in good overall vintage condition; with a couple or more invites in fair condition.

Original press release for a 1986 Andy Warhol Valentine's Day book signing, at the legendary New York cultural institution: Fiorucci. A one day event in which Warhol signed his "America" book for 350 lucky fans.
In conjunction with this Warhol America event, Fiorucci sold Warhol inspired T-shirts, accessories and photos. A rare
much desirable piece of Andy Warhol ephemera produced just one year before the artist's death in February of 1987.

'The New York City Fiorucci store is the stuff of cultural legend. Located in East Midtown and attracting everyone from Gloria Vanderbilt to Madonna, it was as much a place to experience culture and art during the height of the mid 70s and early 80s as it was a store – with everyone from Keith Haring to Andy Warhol hosting events at the location. Intrinsically linked to the glamorous days of disco, the brand was even name checked in Sister Sledge's “He’s The Greatest Dancer” alongside Gucci and Halston. Marc Jacobs skipped summer school to hang out there, Cher would often wonder in, Maripol designed the space. They had an advert featuring Divine. It was unquestionably cool.
As much as they became a staple of New York culture, Fiorucci’s origins were in Italy – where Elio Fiorucci, the son of a shoe shop owner, began designing wellies in primary colors before officially founding the brand in 1967. The Fiorucci store made its way to New York in 1976 (a London store opened one year prior) and soon earned a reputation for a party-like atmosphere alongside daring fashion mixed with beauty products, vintage clothing, music and home décor. This striking, beautifully rendered re-publication, designed by Satoshi Machiguchi in close cooperation with Moriyama, makes for a timeless, limited edition Moriyama collector's piece.
The book includes a companion magazine with a retrospective essay by Moriyama as well as details and backgrounds for each single photobook (compiled exclusively for this publication). The English edition of the companion magazine opens with an edited English translation of Daido Moriyama’s conversation with Takuma Nakahira, originally included in Japanese in the 1972 release and never before translated.

James Whistler (1834-1903), Old Putney Bridge, 1879, etching and drypoint, signed in pencil with a large, elaborate shaded butterfly, lower right and inscribed imp (also signed with the butterfly in the plate), printed in dark-brown/black ink on laid paper, watermark ProPatria, an impression in Glasgow’s seventh (final) state, published by The Fine Art Society, probably printed in 1881, 8x 11 3/4 inches, sheet 12 1/8 x 16 1/8 inches. Reference: Kennedy 178; Glasgow 185.

A fine impression, with wide margins.
The Fine Art Societys relationship with Whistler began with the new etchings of the Thames he made in 1879, following a visit from Ernest Brown who had joined the staff of the gallery. The plate is on a large scale and shows the change in the artists approach to the Thames since the etchings he had made in Wapping and the docks in the summer of 1859. The central motif is the old bridge, by this stage somewhat dilapidated. It was shortly to be demolished and replaced by the new bridge of Cornish granite...
