This extremely rare and historic invitation/exhibition poster was designed by Duchamp on the occasion of a group exhibition at New York's Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery for the Marcel Duchamp Fund of the Americas Chess Foundation in 1966. The exhibition was called "Hommage à Caissa." Duchamp invited 36 artists to contribute. It was in this show , held at the gallery at 978 Madison Ave, as of 1962 the Daniel Cordier & Arne Ekstrom Gallery, where Dalí revealed his chess set.
Duchamp used the RSVP cards he sent to various artists as a design for this invitation. Many of these RSVP cards had the artist's autographs, and a few, like the one from Alexander Calder, included personal notes to Duchamp. Some of the more famous of the 36 artists featured in print who participated by donating works to this fundraiser include: Jasper Johns, Karl Gerstner, David Hare, Salvador Dali, Enrico Donati, Roberto Matta, Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Calder, Dorothea Tanning, Jean Tinguely, Niki De St. Phalle, George Segal, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Meret Oppenheim, Alfonso Ossorio, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Man Ray, Joan Miro, Rene Magritte, Richard Lindner, Roy Lichtenstein, Arman, Enrico Baj, Hans Bellmer, Victor Brauner, Alexander Liberman, William Copley, Cleve Gray and several others. This poster featuring Gal Chews Same Gum Since 1963 (2014) was produced in 2014, in conjunction with Ed Ruscha: Paintings at Gagosian, Rome. The exhibition included recent paintings in which the artist continues to meditate on the melancholy of the Psycho Spaghetti Westerns in complex pictures that conflate his signature elements with the visual devices, perspectival techniques, and refined atmospheres of old master paintings to depict the romantic road trip of youth reduced to roadside dystopia. Provenance: donated by Ed Ruscha to a major charitable arts organization.

There are things that I’m constantly looking at that I feel should be elevated to greater status, almost to philosophical status or to a religious status. That’s why taking things out of context is a useful tool to an artist. It’s the concept of taking something that’s not subject matter and making it subject matter.

At the start of his artistic career, Ed Ruscha called himself an “abstract artist ... who deals with subject matter.” Abandoning academic connotations that came to be associated with Abstract Expressionism, he looked instead to tropes of advertising and brought words—as form, symbol, and material—to the forefront of painting. Working in diverse media with humor and wit, he oscillates between sign and substance, locating the sublime in landscapes both natural and artificial.

This vibrant abstract orange and green print is part of a group of soft-ground etchings (Artist and Model, Artist and Model (in green and yellow), These…Plants) by Howard Hodgkin. The two versions of Artist and Model are printed from the same plates, but in different colors. In this iteration, green watercolor contrasts beautifully with marigold orange, crimson, and terra cotta red. Seen in all three prints is a bust in silhouette before a window. Artist and Model is a surprising name, as Hodgkin never painted or drew from a model.
Signed by the artist with initials, dated 1980, and numbered lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching with hand coloring in a yellow watercolor wash and green gouache on Stoneridge mould-made etching paper. Edition 100.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Artist and Model (in green and yellow) at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s.
