Fjord by Henry Moore drawing of Scottish landscape for W.H. Auden poetry book
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
One of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered 8/25 lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, Fjord features a close-up view of the water as it meets the shore. Yorkshire is famous for its rocky coastline, where fishing villages cling to cliffs, windswept abbeys peak above the skyline, and sand beaches attract families on vacation. Moore’s scene is dark and even sinister – the shore’s narrow inlets reaching into the water like gnarled fingers. Fjord displays Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. Fjord is one of a group of lithographs...

Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective (hand signed by Richard Serra)

Located in New York, NY
Richard Serra Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective (hand signed by Richard Serra), 2011 Hardback monograph with dust jacket (hand signed by Richard Serra) Hand signed by Richard Serra on the title page 12 × 10 × 1 1/2 inches Provenance Strand bookshop New York, official signed copy (see cover) This is the official signed copy from Strand bookshop, NY. bearing the "Signed Copy" stamp on the cover. Makes a superb gift! Published on the occasion of these exhibitions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art(04/11/11-08/28/11) San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (10/15/11-01/16/12) The Menil Collection (03/02/12–06/10/12) Book information: Published by Yale University Press, CO, and The Menil Collection, Houston. English; Hardback; 232 pages with 160 quadratone illustrations Publisher's blurb: As the focal point of numerous high-profile exhibitions, the sculpture of Richard Serra (b. 1939) has drawn international acclaim. Yet even those who have marveled at Serra's intellectually rigorous and large works of sculpture may not be familiar with his equally intriguing drawings. This handsome book brings together for the first time Serra's drawn work, considering the artist's investigation of medium as an activity both independent from and linked to his pioneering sculptural practice. First working in ink, charcoal, and lithographic crayon on paper, Serra originally used drawing as a means to explore form and perceptual relations between his sculpture and the viewer. Over time, his drawings underwent significant shifts in concept, materials, and scale and became fully realized and autonomous works of art. The grand, bold forms he created with black paintstick in his monumental Installation Drawings were designed to disrupt and complement existent spaces and eventually began to occupy entire rooms. In the late 1980s, Serra explored the tension of weight and gravity through layering, and his most recent work experiments with surface effects, using mesh screens as intermediaries between the gesture and the transfer of pigment to paper. More about Richard Serra: Obsession is what it comes down to. It is difficult to think without obsession, and it is impossible to create something without a foundation that is rigorous, incontrovertible, and, in fact, to some degree repetitive. Repetition is the ritual of obsession. Repetition is a way to jumpstart the indecision of beginning. To persevere and to begin over and over again is to continue the obsession with work. Work comes out of work. In order to work you must already be working. —Richard Serra One of the most significant artists of his generation, he has produced large-scale, site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Richard Serra lives and works in New York and on the North Fork of Long Island. Serra attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a BA in English literature; he then studied painting at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut completing both a BFA and MFA. He began showing with Leo Castelli in 1968, and his first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Leo Castelli Warehouse the following year. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, in 1970. Serra’s sculptures and drawings have been celebrated with two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, twenty years apart: Richard Serra/Sculpture (1986) and Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years (2007). He has had solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1977–78); Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany (1978); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (1978); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1980, 2014, and 2017); Centre Pompidou, Paris (1983–84); Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, Germany (1985); Louisiana Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark (1986); Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Münster, Germany (1987); Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (1987); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands (1988); Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Netherlands (1990); Kunsthaus Zürich (1990); CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France (1990); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1992); Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (1992); Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1997); Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro (1997–98); Trajan’s Market, Rome (1999–2000); Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St. Louis (2003); and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy (2004). In 2005 The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a series of eight large-scale works, was installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain. For Monumenta 2008, the major site-specific installation Promenade was shown at the Grand Palais, Paris. Three years later the large-scale, site-specific sculpture 7 was permanently installed opposite the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. A major traveling retrospective dedicated to Serra’s drawings was presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Menil Collection, Houston (the organizing venue), from 2011 to 2012. In 2014 the Qatar Museums Authority presented a two-venue retrospective survey of Serra’s work, and East-West/West-East (2014) was permanently installed in the Brouq Nature Reserve, Zekreet, Qatar. In 2017 the Museum Wiesbaden, Germany, presented Richard Serra: Props, Films, Early Works; an overview of Serra’s work in film and video was shown at the Kunstmuseum Basel; and recent drawings were featured at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Serra has participated in numerous major international exhibitions, including Documenta (1972, 1977, 1982, and 1987), and the Biennale di Venezia (1980, 1984, 2001, and 2013), and his work has been included in many Whitney Annuals and Biennials (1968, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1995, and 2006). Joyce Kozloff Pictures and Borders II, 1977 Color lithograph on wove paper Signed, dated, titled and numbered "Artist's Proof XVI" in graphite pencil on the back of the sheet Editions AP-XVI of 50 30 × 22 inches Pencil signed, titled and annotated Artist's Proof XVI on the back; one of XX Artists' Proofs, aside from the regular edition of 50 Published by Judith Solodkin, founder of SOLO Impression, Inc Provenance: Provenance: De-accessioned from the corporate collection of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan Unframed JOYCE KOZLOFF BIOGRAPHY Joyce Kozloff was born in Somerville, New Jersey in 1942. She received a BFA from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA in 1964 and an MFA from Columbia University in 1967. Kozloff was a major figure in both the Pattern and Decoration and the Feminist art movements of the 1970s. In 1979, she began to focus on public art, increasing the scale of her installations and expanding the accessibility of her art to reach a wider audience. Kozloff has since executed a number of major commissions in public spaces, including Dreaming: The Passage of Time for the United States Consulate, Art in Embassies Program in Istanbul, Turkey; The Movies: Fantasies and Spectacles for the Los Angeles Metro’s Seventh and Flower Station, CA; Caribbean Festival Arts for P.S. 218, New York, NY; New England Decorative Arts for the Harvard Square Subway Station, Cambridge, MA; and Bay Area Victorian, Bay Area Deco, Bay Area Funk for the International Terminal, San Francisco Airport, CA. Since the early 1990s, Kozloff has utilized mapping as a device for consolidating her enduring interests in history, culture, and the decorative and popular arts. She initially concentrated on cities known to her, onto which patterns and images reflecting their colonial pasts were then overlaid. Subsequent series examined bodies of water and the inaccuracies of early maps from the so-called “Age of Discovery.” In 1999-2000, Kozloff was awarded the Jules Guerin Fellowship / Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, Italy. During her yearlong residency abroad Kozloff conceived and completed Targets, a nine-foot walk-in globe in twenty-four sections, each of which is painted with an aerial map of a place that has been bombed by the U.S. in the years since World War II. A 2001 residency at the Bogliasco Foundation in Liguria, Italy provided the genesis for Boy's Art, a series of twenty-four collaged drawings based on maps, diagrams, and illustrations of historic battles...

Will Barnet: A Timeless World (hand signed, dated and warmly inscribed)
By Will Barnet
Located in New York, NY
Will Barnet: A Timeless World (hand signed, dated and warmly inscribed), 2000 Softback monograph with stiff wraps (hand signed, dated and warmly inscribed) Hand signed, dated and warmly inscribed to Margo by Will Barnet on the half title page 12 × 9 × 1/2 inches We believe the colleague Margo refers to renowned African American artist Margo Humphrey, who also worked at the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking with Will Barnet. The full inscription reads: Sep 21 2000 To my colleague -Margo- with appreciation and affection Will Barnet Book information: Published by the Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey and Distributed by Rutgers University Press English; Paperback; 124 pages containing 43 color and 20 black-and-white illustrations Publisher's blurb: Painter and printmaker Will Barnet has actively participated in the New York art world for nearly 70 years. A leading figure in the Indian Space painting movement of the late 1940s, Barnet stressed the spatial structures of Northwest Coast Indian art. Throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s, he made a series of hardedged, totemic abstractions marked by their "all-positive" space, which he described as austere, classical expressions of Indian culture. He then moved on to new art forms in the 1960s and 1970s, creating a series of family and art world portraits that achieved a remarkable balance between the formal demands of abstraction and the humanist aspects of representation. Will Barnet: A Timeless World is the first substantial publications to unify Barnet's prodigious output. Art historian Gail Stavitsky provides an overview of this artist's entire career. Twig Johnson, the museum's curator of Native American Art, discusses the relationship of Barnet's work to this important indigenous artistic tradition. Jessica Nicoll, chief curator at the Portland Museum of Art, explores the profound impact of New England upon Barnet and his work. Many of Barnet's works are beautifully reproduced in this catalog, containing 43 color and 20 black-and-white illustrations. More about Will Barnet: Will Barnet was born in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1911. He has taught and exhibited widely over his more than seventy-five year career. His works are in the collection of virtually every American museum, including locally The Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Whitney Museum of American. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In fall 2011 the National Academy Museum will present a retrospective exhibition being organized by Bruce Weber. Barnet is represented exclusively by Alexandre Gallery...

Lawrence Beall Smith, Seaside Nomads
By Lawrence Beall Smith
Located in New York, NY
A perfect summer day. A young mother, little boy, and even smaller girl have their luncheon under a make shift 'fly' -- a stripped cloth canopy fixed up with poles. Although it is titled 'Seaside Nomads,' to me it has the look of a bay or inlet. It's relatively flat and there are all sorts of grasses, old...

Reclining Nude
By Walt Kuhn
Located in New York, NY
Walt Kuhn (1877-1949), [Reclining Nude], c. 1920, etching, signed in pencil lower margin. In pristine condition, soft fold upper right, with no sign of prior framing or exposure, the full sheet on yellow/cream laid paper, 6 x 7 3/4, the sheet 9 3/8 x 11 3/4 inches, archival mounting. A fine impression. Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art...

Light by Shinsuke Notomi book and print with poem and Japanese brushwork
Located in New York, NY
This listing includes two works by Shinsuke Notomi: a book and print. The book was produced in a limited edition as part of Shinsuke Notomi’s 1982 exhibit “Light”. In 1979 Notomi traveled to Nepal and Himalayas, did drawings for the "Light" series of lithographs which were published in Paris in 1982 and exhibited at the Cartia Granoff Gallery, Paris, and then in 1984 at the Laforet Museum Akasaka, Tokyo. Reminiscent of Jasper Johns' Target with Plaster Casts, the Shinsuke Notomi lithograph depicts concentric circles and checked rectangles with small points of white throughout. Watercolor-like shading gives this work a fluid spontaneity. Shinsuke Notomi was born in Shanghai in 1942. He came to the United States in 1962, studied at the Art Student League in New York, and then earned a BA and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the California College of Arts Crafts in San Francisco. He taught art at Indiana State University from 1972 to 1974, and then traveled to Peru and Bolivia to study Inca art...
