18th Century Galician Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Cast brass Hanukkah Lamp, Galicia, 18th century.
The backplate is cast and pierced featuring dense scrollwork. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks.
This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...

19th Century Iraqi Silver Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster.
While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...

Antique Russian Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah Rare 5 Color Enamel Icon
Located in New York, NY
A rare Russian five color polychrome enamel bronze travel icon depicting scenes from the life of the Prophet Elijah including the Fiery Ascension. The border in cornflower blue enamel and scrolled foliate elements topped by the Old Slavonic inscription- Obraz Sviatovo Proroka Ulii- Image of the Holy Prophet Elijah. In the upper left corner is of the hand of God on a white enamel background signifying the clouds. To the right is the Fiery Ascension of Elijah with his dynamic winged horses on a background of finely hand chased flames with stylized wind gusts. The Prophet holds the reigns in his right hand and reaches out with his left to his follower Elisha with a mantle for the parting of the waters of the river Jordan. The river Jordan takes center stage in the icon as a dramatic element - a wide swath of flowing waves with the scenes from the life of Elijah depicted to its left: The Prophet Elijah in the wilderness; Elijah hides in the desert and is fed by an Angel; and Elijah and Elisha crossing the river Jordan parted by Elijah's mantle.
This scarce icon is especially significant for the Old Believers tradition. The Old Believers were the chief makers of bronze icons, created by using fire rather than painted by hand. The veneration of the Prophet Elijah, who through his sacrifice, was able to call for fire from heaven manifests a special connection for the sect. Fire, ogon in Russian, was viewed as a purifier and a link to the Last Judgement and the end of the world. Polychrome enamel icons...

Fine Antique Cuernavaca Reticulated Sterling Silver Ruby Glass Cross on Chain
Located in New York, NY
Intricate and unusual antique Cuernavaca reticulated sterling silver and ruby glass cross on chain
Late 19th- Early 20th Century
The city of Cuernavaca, the ancient Quauhnahuac, is called the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its designation as tierra templada (temperate region). It is believed to be one of the origins of the Mesoamerican civilization. The city is home to a number of notable early churches dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including the Cuernavaca Cathedral, which was a part of the monastery of the Third Order of the Franciscans, called La Asunción in the 16th century. The location, just a 90 minute drive from Mexico City, has attracted royalty, aristocrats and artists for centuries. Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy, Barbara Hutton, the Shah of Iran, Bauhaus designer Michael van Buren...
