The bottoms are made from pine and each are stenciled with the maker's mark, "R Folger Maker Nantucket Mass." Rowland Folger (1803-1883) is considered one of Nantucket's first makers of lightship baskets. Very rare 19th century Nantucket Lightship Bushel Basket by George C. Gardner of Nantucket Island (1809 - 1889), an oversized round open basket handcrafted with a fat rattan weave on wide wooden splint staves, a carved wooden heart-shaped handle which is deeply notched above and below the rim and extends under the weave a full half-way down their staves, and a round pine bottom deeply inscribed "George C. Nantucket Basket with Half Hull Model of a Sloop on Lid, by Harry Hilbert, 1995, a Nantucket purse having a solid mahogany hinged top surmounted with a finely carved and laminated half hull model of a sloop built in "lifts", fine brass hinges minutely inlaid, and walnut cross-band and satinwood line inlay around perimeter; braided leather shoulder strap attached with bone mounts; nickel clasp; woven cane wrap on oak staves; signed and dated by wood-burnt stamp on the mahogany bottom. This is a beautiful basket made with astounding craftsmanship by one of the finest artists in the field.
The basket remains in superb, barely used condition.
