Kenneth Jay Lane--whose monogram KJL is signed on the white-rose-decorated gold-tone clasp of this double-strand black-resin beaded necklace--is only one of four bylined jewelry designers collected by The Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection At The Metropolitan Museum of Art from the two-decade period between 1970-1989, which was dominated by such bold big shapes in mostly black, white and gold.
A must for any collector of the world-renowned American-founded beauty-brand Avon, its rare limited-edition retailed necklace by Lane titled "Midnight Rose" is among the most distinctive that it produced among its lines of primarily perfume, cosmetics, and personal-care products whose origin dates back to 1886 in New York. Notably, the life-sized shiny cast-acrylic rose has the look of a far more expensive carved stone, such as one cut and polished from light-filled saturated-white chalcedony, which is a hard semi-precious stone favored by Lane.
Like Lane's own line when it was originally signed KJL, the decorated clasp is uniquely designed. It locks underneath with a semi-circular hinge, which enables the stylized three-dimensional smooth rose to be perfectly positioned on the right side of the upper chest with the bud facing upwards above its three-leaf sepal in contrasting gilt textured metal. This position adds sparkle from above to the three pave rhinestones in a gold-tone setting at center of the rose, as if its dew-covered bud was beginning to open in strong moonlight. To balance the bold rose shape, the black strands cross each other below at a single point, which adds another eye-catching element to the concealed-string-tied necklace.
In mint condition with no sign of wear, the necklace was acquired in its original lavender Avon retail box. In contrast, the paper shows wear and tear from handling, while still featuring the jewelry designer's full-name script signature, title, and text details like how to care for this synthetic jewelry. This luxurious strand of sumptuous cultured Akoya pearls from the Midcentury (circa 1960s) is composed of 206 pearls on silk, hand-knotted between each pearl. The original silk string remains in fine condition. The pearls graduate in size from 5.86mm to 8.5mm and are a creamy-golden color with a blush of pink overtone. These round and near-round pearls have thick nacre, which has resulted in two things: minor surface imperfections and a less than mathematically perfect spherical form, along with the spectral display of prismatic color known as orient. Not all pearls display orient, where a rainbow of colors seems to originate from within the pearl and slide along its surface. Only natural pearls and cultured pearls with very thick nacre. This strand was created by the iconic Hawaiian jeweler, Ming's. They were famous and beloved for their use of natural jade and cultured Akoya pearls with tremendous charisma.
This 33" necklace can be worn its full length or wrapped around the neck to create a four-strand necklace. The unique and breathlessly simple Ming's clasp is 14K yellow gold with a brushed finish.
If you love perfect cultured Akoya pearls, this necklace won't be for you. These are not Mikkimoto style pearls. Ming's design aesthetic prioritized uniqueness over tradition. Their jade jewelry was almost never created in traditional jade colors like apple or imperial green, but instead featured "off" colors like soft sage, ruddy brown, silvery gray. Likewise, Ming's selected the pearls for their jewelry with an eye for character and quality. The nacre these pearls possess is so thick, the piece will endure for generations.

The firm was known their their unique aesthetic and use of high-quality materials including natural, untreated jadeite jade, nephrite, black coral, and spectacular early cultured pearls like those you see here.
These spectacular cultured Akoya pearls are a rich golden color with pink and light green overtone. They have thick nacre, like many vintage cultured Akoya pearls, and as a result, they display the gorgeous spectral play of light across their surface known as orient. The pearls are near-round to off-round and display surface irregularities and blemishes. I love vintage cultured Akoya pearls because they look more natural and unique than the modern variety, which to my eyes look artificial.
The clasp is an early example of what would in time become the iconic Ming's clasp. This one, unlike many, bears the Ming's maker's mark as well as a metal fineness stamp for 14K. There is a Chinese character on the clasp which, I believe, says "Ming's."
Those of us who love pearls feel this way for a variety of reasons. I love natural uncultured pearls for their luminous beauty and rarity. And I love vintage cultured Akoya pearls because each one is unique. The culturing process has evolved since these pearls were farmed and today, we do not see pearls that look like those you see here. Which makes them incredibly special.

Akoya Pearl Double Strand Necklace
Located in Northampton, MA
Spectacular in every way, this impossibly luxurious midcentury (circa 1970s) double-stand necklace is composed of 118 cultured Akoya pearls. The spectacular vintage pearls are huge —9.5 -10mm— and slightly off-round. They have high luster and beautiful orient; the spectral display of light present in some cultured pearls with thick nacre.
The pearls are slightly to perhaps moderately blemished and less than perfectly spherical in form. A small price to pay, in my opinion, for cultured Akoya pearls of this size.
The pearls are a soft golden cream color with pink overtones. The 14K yellow gold clasp holds a single 7.8mm Akoya pearl; even the "little" pearl on the clasp is larger than those found on the vast majority of Akoya pearl necklaces.
