Post Soviet Russian Jewish Oil Painting Marc Klionsky Jerusalem Angel Shofar
Located in Surfside, FL
Marc Khonsky (American Russian, 1927-2017) Untitled (Winged Prophet Playing Music) 1978 Oil on board Hand signed and dated lower right Dimensions: board: 14"h x 11"w, overall (with frame): 19.5"h x 16.5"w This depicts a winged angel in the guise of a rabbi, possibly the messiah, moshiach, or Prophet Elijah blowing a shofar over the old city of Jerusalem. A masterpiece laden with mystical symbolism. Marc Klionsky (Марк Клионский) (1927 – 2017) was a Russian-American Jewish artist who worked in New York City from his immigration in 1974 until his passing in 2017. Klionsky developed a style of American Realism uniquely defined by his classical training in the Soviet Union and his perspective of daily life in New York and America. Over the course of his career, Klionsky painted portraits of prominent world figures who shaped the 20th century. John Russell, art critic for The New York Times, described him as "a good man and a brave man and one of the most eloquent painters around. We need him" and as "one of the best portrait painters around." Marc Klionsky was born in Minsk, Belarus to a Jewish family in 1927. His father, Leo (Zev Vulf) Klionsky was a printer from Borisov, Belarus. The son of a woodcutter and engraver Klionsky's father moved to Minsk and eventually married Liza (née Rozenstein) in 1926. As a child, Klionsky attended the Art School for Gifted Children in Minsk. During World War II, Klionsky's family was evacuated to Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, where Klionsky began to earn a living producing anti-Fascist posters and illustrations for local newspapers and other publications. Klionsky studied at the Drama Institute at the Kazan Theater, where he primarily focused on developing costume designs for various productions. After the war, Mark Klionsky attended first the Serov Art Institute before entering the Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (now known as the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg). Klionsky's diploma piece was reproduced in an edition of 50,000 copies and distributed throughout the USSR. Klionsky received his PhD in 1957, during which period he studied with Professor Boris Ioganson. Klionsky became the youngest artist to be exhibited at the Tretyakov National Gallery in Moscow. During this period, Klionsky met his future wife of nearly 59 years, Irina Klionsky (née Korolik), with whom he had two daughters, Nadia, an artist, and Elena, a pianist. Klionsky established himself in the Soviet Union initially by producing official Social Realist works that depicted political figures and daily life in the Soviet Union. However, in the privacy of his own studio, Klionsky began to explore the themes of Jewish life, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. He soon discovered the creative and intellectual restrictions of working as a Jewish artist in the Soviet Union. After Klionsky left the Soviet Union with his family in 1974, traveling first to Rome, Italy and then to New York, he expressed in his work the newborn freedom that he found in America. Shortly after his arrival, he was recognized in an ABC television production about his work, Canvases of Freedom. This was followed by a U.S. State Department documentary (produced by the U.S. Information Agency) shown in ninety-two countries about one of his exhibitions at Hammer Galleries. During this period, Klionsky also taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, birthplace of the Ashcan School of American Realism. While Klionsky took advantage of his creative freedom in the United States to explore a range of abstract styles and media, he ultimately gained prominence as a master of portrait painting and of American Realism. His works include portraits of leaders in the world of politics and humanitarianism, such as Israeli premier Golda Meir, Elie Wiesel, Prince Bandar Bin Sultan, and Vernon Jordan; music, including Dizzy Gillespie, Mstislav Rostropovich, and B.B. King; business leaders Armand Hammer, Steve Forbes, and Dwayne Andreas; and many others. His portraits are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lausanne, Switzerland. Klionsky was also honored during his lifetime to have been selected to sculpt the Nobel Peace Prize Commemorative Medal for Elie Wiesel. During his lifetime, Marc Klionsky's paintings and prints were exhibited throughout the Soviet Union, Europe, America, Israel and Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand. His Soviet works were exhibited in the Tretyakov National Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in Leningrad multiple times throughout the 1950s. In 1962, his work was shown alongside that of Marc Chagall at Grosvenor Gallery in London. Separately, his work was shown along with other Soviet artists at the time in West Berlin, Hiroshima, Rome, and New York. After emigrating to New York in 1974, his first international exhibition was held in Paris at the Salon des Reprouves with Galleries Hardy in 1978. His first solo New York show took place a Nakhamkin Fine Arts Gallery on Madison Avenue in 1979, after which Klionsky was represented by Hammer Galleries for the remainder of his career. Klionsky had several solo shows in Europe between 1991 and 1992, showing at the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Salon Internationale des Musées at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, and his "God Bless America" traveling retrospective that began at the St. Ingbert Museum in Germany. The last exhibition of Klionsky's work during his lifetime was at an event titled "Painting the Face of Russian Jewry: The Art and Journey of Marc Klionsky” at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 2010, with presentations made by Sir Antony Polonsky, Emeritus Professor of Holocaust Studies, and Professor Nancy Scott, former chair of the Fine Arts department at Brandeis University. Marc Klionsky's works hang in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity in New York, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Yad Vashem Art Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, and the State Hermitage Museum and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, among other private and public collections internationally. He was part of a tradition of Soviet Jewish artists that included El Lissitzky, and Natan Altman, Marc Chagall, Robert Falk, Anatoly Kaplan, Ilya Kabakov, Oscar Rabin...

Lone Horse in Abstract Landscape
By Ethel Magafan
Located in Miami, FL
A stylized horse is depicted grazing in an abstract landscape. Most likely, the location is Woodstock, New York, where the artist lived. Signed Lower Right; Framed; Note: titled and signed on verso. Ethel Magafan (August 10, 1916 – April 24, 1993) was an American painter and muralist. Magafan was born in Chicago to Greek parents who had recently immigrated to the U.S. The family soon relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Magafan's artistic training occurred at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under the tutelage of Peppino Mangravite, Boardman Robinson and Frank Mechau, who hired Magafan and her twin sister, Jenne, to assist on mural projects. In 1937, aEthel won the commission to paint a mural in the U.S. post office in Auburn, Nebraska, making her the youngest recipient of such a commission. It would be the first of seven government-sponsored commissions for the artist. Murals "Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1814" E. Magafan, 1943 Under President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, several programs were created to employ Americans during the Great Depression. The Magafan twins worked under the New Deal's Section of Painting and Sculpture, a program that hired thousands of artists to paint murals in public spaces, particularly post offices. Ethel and her twin sister, Jenne Magafan, became widely known for their murals painted during the Great Depression. Ethel received her first of seven Government commissions when she was commissioned to produce a painting for the United States post office in Auburn, Nebraska, titled Threshing.Other murals commissioned by the US Government hang in the United States Senate Chamber, the Social Security Building and the Recorder Deeds Building in Washington, D.C., and in post offices in Wynne, Arkansas, titled Cotton Pickers in 1940; in Madill, Oklahoma, titled Prairie Fire in 1941; and Englewood, Colorado, titled The Horse Corral in 1942.Her final mural, entitled Grant in the Wilderness, was installed in 1979 in the Chancellorsville Visitor Center at the Fredericksburg National Memorial Military Park in Virginia, She was a member of the National Academy of Design. Large Painting "Red Sky" Oil Spackle on Wood Katherine Bowling American Modern
By Katherine Bowling
Located in Surfside, FL
Katherine Bowling (American, b. 1955) Oil on spackle on wood 1988 Hand signed, titled and dated verso, Dimensions: 48"h x 48"w Provenance: From an Important Private Collection, NYC; bears gallery label from Blum Helman Gallery, NYC Notes/Literature: Exhibited: "Earth and Sky: Recent Paintings by Katherine Bowling, Joan Nelson and Ellen Phelan", Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College 1992 Katherine Bowling (born 1955, Washington, D.C.) is a modernist painter known for her layered landscape paintings that draw inspiration from nature in the Hudson Valley. Katherine Bowling grew up in Tidewater, Virginia. She received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978. Bowling's first New York show, as well as her first solo exhibition, was in 1987. Bowling's works tend to be luminous landscape paintings that often feature woods and fields as well as roads. Many of her paintings are based on her photographs of woods and fields surrounding and in Schoharie County, where she rents a house. As Molly O'Neill notes in an essay on Bowling and her work, this area is "fifty miles northwest of the vistas that inspired the Hudson River School painters in the mid-1800s." Bowling focused in particular on the imagery of roads for the theme of her exhibition at Greenberg Van Doren, Divide. As the title implies, writes Lilly Wei in the exhibition's accompanying catalog, Bowling views the roads as "abstract marks in the landscape that divide and order space." Even with roads she has often traveled, Bowling finds something new on closer inspection that alters her perception of the familiar and mundane. Bowling explains that the roads "function as a metaphor for memory and displacement." In 2001, Bowling exhibited a number of seascape paintings. In her essay on the exhibition, art historian and critic Nancy Princenthal writes that, far from being an aberration from Bowling's typically home-based scenes, the ocean paintings are "a return to childhood memories and life long inclinations. A native of Virginia, she spent her first summers at the Atlantic shore and on the Chesapeake Bay." Primarily, however, Bowling's works focus on capturing the play of light and shadow. Art critic Eleanor Heartney notes that "Her paintings, like those of Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir, focus on the ephemeral moment and the fleeting impression, conjuring the flicker of sunlight through the trees, the shifting shadows of early evening, the reflections of clouds and foliage glancing across the rippling surface of a lake." They have a luminist quality to them. O'Neill argues that Bowling additionally "has an innate sense of abstraction and she ranges happy as an uncaged chicken, pecking elements from the Impressionists' obsession with light; from modern photography; and the drip paintings of Jackson Pollock." Bowling is influenced by the use of light in the paintings of European Romantics such as J. M. W. Turner and John Constable as well as by the later work of George Inness:  Her paintings also recall landscapes by Claude Lorraine, Albert Pinkham Ryder and Camille Corot. Bowling is known for her use of spackle. She uses a long process of layering and sanding to create the "back-lit" effect found in her paintings. First, the paintings begin as a photograph which she typically takes near her rented house in the Hudson Valley. Then, she uses these photographs, which serve as her "preliminary drawings," to aid in the painting process. She also paints from memory and direct observation. Bowling paints on square panels of plywood. Bowling considers rectangular pieces to be too horizontal and rife of implications already of landscapes and horizons. She sometimes paints on one of these square and sometimes paints on several square panels together. The seams between these adjoined panels are left visible. Next, Bowling applies layers of spackle. O'Neill remarks that "Inspired, perhaps, by her day job of painting houses, [Bowling] turned to more industrial media: damp vinyl spackle, a building compound that is applied to wooden panels to create a matte, fresco-like surface. Thinned oil pigments are poured, allowed to dry, and then the Sisyphean task of sanding begins."  Initial layers generally correspond with the color of the light—varying from pinks, golds, blues, and oranges. Through this layering and sanding, she creates a luminous quality in her landscapes. Despite rigorous sanding, air bubbles within the spackle layers are revealed occasionally on the surface. Rather than disguise them, Bowling integrates them. Heartney writes that Bowling "allows these irregularities to become part of the painting so that the viewer's perception of the play of light and shadow across the image cannot be separated from an awareness of surface itself." In later stages of painting, Bowling stands above panels to throw, dribble, and splatter paint with a hair dryer, recalling the techniques of Abstract Expressionist artists such as Jackson Pollock. Winter Evening Fifth Avenue Nocturne - New York at Night
By Ernest Fiene
Located in Miami, FL

The absence of newer glass-and-steel architecture provides the painting with the charm of old New York. The people have a slightly zombie-like quality, akin to George Tooker. Best viewed with a top and direct gallery light...
