John Glick Plum Street Pottery Reduction Fired Shino Glaze Cup Published in Book

“Untitled” ceramic, is an example of the kind of work by which John Glick became so famous. He was seduced by the effects of the reduction kiln, which decreased the levels of oxygen during firing, inducing the flame to pull oxygen out of the clay and glazes changing the colors of the glazes depending on their iron and copper content. In this way he achieved the rich gradients of ochre and umber and variations in stippling and opacity.
This piece is signed on the bottom and can be found on page 92, plate #125 in “John Glick: A Legacy in Clay.”
John was an American Abstract Expressionist ceramicist born in Detroit, MI. Though open to artistic experimentation, Glick was most influenced by the styles and aesthetics of Asian pottery—an inspiration that shows in his use of decorative patterns and glaze choices. He has said that he is attracted to simplicity, as well as complexity: my work continually reflects my re-examination that these two poles can coexist… or not, in a given series. Glick also took influences from master potters of Japan, notably Shoji Hamada and Kanjrio Kawai, blending their gestural embellishments of simple forms with attitudes of Abstract Expressionism. He was particularly drown to the work of Helen Frankenthaler whose soak-stain style resonated with Glick’s multi-layered glaze surfaces, which juxtaposed veils of atmospheric color with gestural marks and pattern. He spent countless hours developing and making his own tools in order to achieve previously unseen results in his work with clay and glaze.

Herb Babcock known as a Michigan Glass Artist began as a metal sculptor. He studied glass blowing in 1969 and created a series of Glass Image Vessels in 1974. Eventually he began to combine metal and glass in sculpture. The Pillared Series, which includes glass, steel and stone, began in 1989.
Herb received both his BFA and his MFA in Sculpture: his bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his master’s from the Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), and Morris Brose...

About the Artist: Juliette Steele, an American artist, was an accomplished printmaker, painter and teacher. Steele was part of the Geometric Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism movements. Her peers included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Clyfford Still.
Steele was born in 1909 in Union City, New Jersey. In the late 1920s, she moved to New York to study art and fashion design at the Traphagen School of Design. A decade later, she moved to San Francisco with husband Edward Steele, and earned a Bachelor of Art degree from San Francisco State College.
In the 1940s, Steele found inspiration from the new city, and produced a series of lithographs depicting San Francisco landmarks. At the same time, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University, and continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The rich tones of the stoneware clay come through the soft creamy glaze that drips over the surface like melted vanilla ice cream over red devil cake. There are incised marks on the clay reminiscent of marks left by tree insects under bark. This beautifully rendered ceramic box is perched on what appear to be little 1.5 inch lion feet. They give a special dignity to the piece. Of particular interest and commanding presence are the many forms attached to the lid and sides of the box. Are they twisted human figures, bent organic growth, climbing up or falling down? Whatever they are, they provide endless entertainment for the creative imagination.

Vivika Heino Ceramic Bowl

This ceramic salt glaze bowl with blue graphic design is a stunning example of the Heino’s collaborative creations. This piece is in perfect condition with no chips, no breaks and no repairs with a perfection as though it has just emerged from the kiln. The blue graphic design that surrounds the piece in a repeated pattern is beautifully incorporated into the shape of the bowl and the color enhances the basic glaze of the piece. The Heino’s worked together in a home/studio in California from mid to late 20th century.
Otto was one of twelve children born of Finnish immigrants, Lena and August Heino, in East Hampton, Connecticut, United States. His family ran a dairy farm in quiet farm country. Otto Heino's involvement with ceramics began while serving in the U.S. Air Force in England; during a military leave, he spent several days watching Bernard Leach throw pots. Following his return to the US, he used his GI Bill funding in 1949 to study ceramics at the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts, in Concord, New Hampshire.
Vivika was born Vivien Place in Caledonia, New York. In the mid 1930s, after getting a teaching degree at the Rochester Normal School, she spent two years with the Works Progress Administration theatre project, and headed the National Youth Administration in San Francisco. Discovering clay at this time, she studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute), and with Glen Lukens at the University of Southern California. Lukens, a highly respected ceramist renowned for his glazes, gave her the opportunity to explore colored clays, develop new glazes, and experiment with raw materials. (In later years, she and Otto were to devote a day a week to measuring, mixing, and testing new glazes.) Her pots were exhibited at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, in San Francisco.
Vivien Place started using the name Vivika while studying at the Swedish Applied Arts, in San Francisco, where teacher Margaret Gravandar thought everyone should have a Swedish name. (Even her mother started calling her that.)
