"El Tren" Ceramic, Glaze, Colors, Mexican Folk Art, Four Sections
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
"El Tren" is a whimsical and playful rendition of a train. It is beautifully glazed in various colors.
This particular ceramic was from the collection of Jane and Richard Knight’s Estate. Jane Knight was a famous fiber and textile artist. Richard was a photographer who worked for Eliel Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The Knights and Girard became close friends and it was Girard who gifted “Santa Cruz De Las Huertas Jalisco” to the Knights. Alexander Girard left his personal collection to the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, NM. The Girards eventually amassed a collection of more than 106,000 objects from across the globe. Their 1978 gift of this collection to the Museum of International Folk art quintupled the size of their collection and prompted the construction of a new wing, which opened in 1982 and houses a mere 10% of the Girard Collection in the permanent exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond, which was designed by Alexander Girard himself. This collection includes numerous multiples and is notable for its great breadth, including traditional arts, popular arts, and paper ephemera. “I believe we should preserve this evidence of the past, not as a pattern for sentimental imitation,” Girard once said, “but as nourishment for the creative spirit of the present.” Indeed, folk art was an important inspiration for Girard’s design work.

"Pod", Decorative Tatooed Sculptural Ceramic with Transparent Glaze
By Michele Oka Doner
Located in Detroit, MI
"Pod" is a precious sculpture with a decorated tactile surface and a warm glaze giving the piece a soft glow. The transparent glaze enhances the creamy tones of the clay. Ms. Oka Doner created unique hand-size sculptures during the 1960s of which the "Pod" is an exquisite example. Her clay technical skills cover a wide range from enormous wall pieces to small decorative pieces that demand to be touched and held. This piece, despite being a fruit, is the perfect example of her famous "Tatooed" figurative sculptures.
Michele Oka Doner (born in Miami Beach, Florida, United States) is an American artist and author who works in a variety of media including sculpture, prints, drawings, functional objects and video. She has also worked in costume and set design and has created over 40 public and private permanent art installations. She is best known for her “A Walk On The Beach,” a one and a quarter mile long bronze and terrazzo concourse at Miami International Airport. It is composed of over 9000 bronzes embedded in terrazzo with mother-of-pearl. At one and quarter linear miles, it is one of the largest artworks in the world.
She is granddaughter of painter, Samuel Heller. She attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her art instructor Milton Cohen was experimenting with The Space Theater and George Manupelli began the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Their students were engaged in poetry, dance, light, music, all combined into a unitary vision, a motif that shaped Oka Doner's student years and is characteristic of her work today. She participated in a Manupelli experimental film, a "Map Read" performance with art drawing instructor Al Loving and Judsonite dancer Steve Paxton as well as several "Happenings." Another influence was art historian and Islamic scholar, Oleg Grabar, who illustrated how patterns in architecture are able to dissolve space.
She received her BS and MFA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 2008 she was a U of M Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; Germans Van Eck Gallery, New York; Diane Brown Gallery, New York; Art & Industrie Gallery, New York; Willoughby, Marlborough Gallery, New York; Studio Stefania Miscetti in Rome; and Gloria Luria Gallery in Miami, Florida.
During the 1960s Michelle Oka Doner was living and working in Detroit, Michigan, where she became acquainted with Charles McGee and his gallery located in the Fisher Building...

"THE MANTEL SERIES" John Glick Stoneware Objets d
Art Intimate Indoor/Outdoor
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
John Glick is well-known for his beautifully rendered functional pieces of art. His decorative pieces, especially his large pots, are breathtakingly powerful objects. Glick's creative genius, however, is most exquisitely shown in this unique grouping of objets d'art. The Wall Hanging has a lovely classical scroll shelf. The objets on the shelf include an apple and pear - both fruits frequently rendered by artists from the Dutch Masters to Cezanne because of their perfectly balanced shape and rich colors. In addition is a small Greek or Roman styled dish used as an oil lamp. The other three objets are mysterious twisted tube-like organic shapes. John Glick, at one of his richest, creative bests. The objets are of various sizes, movable and can be displayed as desired. The size given is the overall size of both pieces and the objets d'art.
"The works in John Glick’s “Mantel Series” are still life tableaux comprised of ordinary, yet intriguing objects that imply a history of people interacting with objects and each other over time. Imagine a lettr or poem from a loved one, once read, tucked among other fabourite things for safekeeping. Or a salty treasure carried in a dampened pocket and later deposited on a cottage shelf to dry, crackle and change. In essence, the mantels hold suggestive collections in which most people can find a part of themselves a link to a personal memory and a connection to a lost moment in time.
His body of work, The Mantel Series, was partially inspired by a memory of a salt box that hung near his grandmother’s kitchen wood stove. For Glick, the unassuming little box, with its pleasing enigmatic shape and wooden lid, conjured pleasant boyhood memories, nostalgia for home and hearth, and vivid awareness of history. Upon his wall-based mantels, the artist placed a well-honed repertoire of distinct objects, all deftly crafted of clay, that become characters in his unspoken drama, each form playing off the others in the ensemble.” Plum Tree Pottery...

Palissy Majolica Bowl Snake Spider Frog Caterpillar Butterfly Lizard
Located in Detroit, MI
This Jose A Cunha Portuguese Palissy Majolica plate features a snake, spider, frog, caterpillar, and butterfly on green shredded clay ground. The piece bears the maker's marks for Jose A Cunha pottery. Palissy ware is a style of ceramics that is also known as rusticware due to their earth-toned palettes and naturalistic plant and animal scenes that are cast to it. The style was coined in reference to the 16th century French potter Bernard Palissy and experienced a significant revival in the 19th century thanks to Charles-Jean Avisseau. It's strongest revival however was in Portugal where it was produced by the potteries of Mafra, Jose A. Cunha, Alves, José Francisco de Sousa...

A halfcentury before they produced their first car, the Peugeot brothers were making coffee grinders, continuing to do so for over 100years. In 1840 the Peugeots produced their first moulin a
cafe out of a combination of metal and wood. The beans were inserted into the metal

"Flower Sculpture" Jade and Semi-Precious Stones, Pinks and Greens
Located in Detroit, MI
"Flower Sculpture" was a popular three-dimensional artform during the 1950's and 1960s. This is a rare complex piece with semi-precious stones and jade. The colors of pink, white and jade lend it an unending freshness to the piece that is rarely found in the more common darker toned such flower sculptures.
Depictions of flowers and nature though a popular Asian theme, similar organic artwork...

"Poppies", Deep Red and Orange Glass, Vase,
Located in Detroit, MI
“Poppies” is a poetic interpretation of a garden flower rendered in exquisite colored glass by Craig Mitchell Smith. Craig is an extraordinary glass artist who is currently active in his Lansing, Michigan studio. He has changed the way we think about glass. He has received national recognition for his glass sculptures and is known throughout the United States for his solo gallery and public garden exhibitions. Craig’s revolutionary techniques in kiln-formed glass inspire experts in the field and is said to be the most innovative kiln glass artist in America today.
Craig Mitchell Smith’s glass garden includes a bounty of massive dandelions gone to seed, graceful grapevines on bowing arbors, and brilliant fields of poppies and sunflowers. The Lansing, Michigan, artist has been creating floral forms in kiln-formed glass since 2006 using revolutionary techniques that have poised him as one of the most innovative kiln glass artists in America today.
Originally a painter, theatrical set designer, home restorer, and flower arranger, Smith followed a random road into fused glassmaking that has now taken him around the world. Entirely self-taught in glass, the artist believes that his eclectic background and skills with stagecraft influence his methods and how he thinks about his current medium. Smith’s aesthetic is decidedly theatrical, his style painterly.

"Windswept" Blown Glass, Steel, Abstract, Flowers, Free Standing Sculpture
Located in Detroit, MI
"Windswept" is an example of Flo Perkins most current work. The pure white blown-glass flowers are a dramatic and strong contrast to the hard black steel though both exhibit movement and flow in contrast to the materials used. Perkins is an absolute master in her creative aesthetic designs and "Windswept" gives voice to her poetic vision realized in this sculpture.
Flo Perkins is an American glass artist currently working and residing in the Pojoaque Valley north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She attended the Philadelphia College of Art earning a BFA and University of California, Los Angeles earning an MFA.
In the 1970s Perkins was one of a small group of female artisan glass blowers. In the 1980s Perkins built her own glass studio in Pojoaque, New Mexico where she worked on learning Venetian glassblowing techniques. She further refined her glass making technique while studying with the Murano glass master Lino Tagliapietra.
While living in New Mexico in the 1980s and 1990s she studied botanical forms including cacti, flower buds and bouquets and began incorporating those forms into her work. In the 1990s she began incorporating bronze, steel bars and iron into her glass work to create larger works including lattices, wreaths, swags and bouquets.
By the early 21st century Perkins had mastered her glassblowing technique and become known for her creation of brightly colored botanical sculptures created using Italian techniques including murrina, reticello and granulare. She also built her fourth hot shop on her estate located 20 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Perkin's work has been displayed at Habatat Galleries in Pontiac, Michigan, Addison Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Traver Sutton Gallery in Seattle, Washington, The Elliot Brown Gallery in Seattle, Washington, Imago Galleries in Palm Desert, California, Cline Lewallen Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tagliapietra and Dante Marioni...
