Elegant Morvant Ram Engraving, Buffon Amsterdam Edition 1769
Located in Langweer, NL
Elegant 1769 Morvant Ram Engraving – Hand-Coloured Buffon Dutch Edition
This impressive hand-coloured 18th-century engraving of the Morvant ram, titled Le Morvant, comes from the rare Dutch edition of Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. Appearing as Plate XXX in Tome XI, this striking portrait is one of the most distinctive and decorative sheep and goat engravings in the entire Buffon series. Drawn by Jacques de Sève, Buffon’s leading illustrator, and engraved with great refinement, the plate combines scientific accuracy with a strong visual presence, typical of the finest work in the quadruped volumes.
The Morvant ram stands in full profile on a raised foreground bank, its powerful build, muscular legs, and long shaggy coat rendered with exquisite detail. De Sève’s elegant cross-hatching gives volume and texture to the thick wool and the dark mane that drapes down the animal’s chest. The curved horns, expressive eye, and firm stance emphasise both the strength and the calm dignity of the breed. The hand colouring, characteristic of the Amsterdam Schneider edition, enriches the engraving with warm brown tones, natural greens, and soft blues that bring the entire composition to life.
Behind the ram, a landscape of minarets, domed buildings, and distant walls evokes the North African or Near Eastern setting associated with ancient regional breeds. The broad sky, shaded in subtle blue-grey washes, anchors the scene and provides an atmospheric backdrop that complements the earthy foreground tones. As a result, the plate balances scientific illustration and picturesque landscape in a way that remains highly desirable for collectors and decorators alike.
Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle represented one of the most ambitious publishing achievements of the Enlightenment, combining zoological study with an artistic sensibility. The Morvant ram, a robust and historically important breed, was of particular interest for its adaptability, distinctive appearance, and long-standing role in agriculture and local culture. This engraving served as one of the earliest widely circulated visual records of the breed in Western Europe.
More than 250 years old, this sheet remains bright, clean, and visually engaging. The strong plate mark, generous margins, and refined hand colouring make it an excellent standalone artwork or a perfect companion to related Buffon plates such as the Tunis ram, zebu, buffalo, or yak.
Condition report:
Very good for age. Minor toning and small foxing marks mostly confined to margins. Light handling marks typical of 18th-century paper. Strong impression with clearly visible plate mark. Hand colouring fresh and well preserved. No tears or repairs observed.
Framing tips:
Frame with an ivory, pale grey, or warm cream mat to complement the soft colouring of the wool and sky. A walnut or natural oak frame enhances the warm tones, while a slim black frame creates a more modern contrast. Floating the sheet is an excellent option to highlight the wide margins and plate mark.

Antique Coronation of Mary Religious Chromolithograph with Gold, c. 1900
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique Coronation of Mary Religious Chromolithograph with Gold Tones
This richly colored antique religious chromolithograph depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important devotional themes in Catholic iconography. The composition shows Mary seated among heavenly clouds, modestly inclining her head as Christ gently places the golden crown upon her, while God the Father looks on from the opposite side. Above them, the Holy Spirit appears in the form of the descending dove, radiating divine light. Surrounding the scene, four cherubs float among soft clouds, holding floral garlands and lilies as symbols of purity and divine grace.
The scene is executed in vibrant late-19th or early-20th century chromolithography, a technique prized for its intense color saturation and painterly softness. The gold halos, crown, and heavenly glow give the print a luminous presence that shifts beautifully with changing light. The palette combines warm golds, rich blues, soft flesh tones, and delicate pastels, making this one of the most visually striking devotional compositions of its type.
This image was most likely published in Germany for the Catholic devotional market, where high-quality chromolithographs were produced for churches, schools, and private home altars. The multilingual caption along the lower margin, referencing the Coronation of Mary in several European languages, confirms its international devotional circulation.
The Coronation of Mary is a theological subject derived from the belief in Mary’s assumption into heaven and her role as Queen of Heaven. This theme became especially popular in 19th-century Catholic visual culture as part of renewed Marian devotion. The imagery here directly reflects that revival, emphasizing gentleness, divine hierarchy, and celestial harmony.
Because of its powerful religious symbolism, radiant gold accents, and exceptional color quality, this print works beautifully both as a devotional object and as a decorative statement piece in classical, ecclesiastical, or traditional interiors. It also fits exceptionally well within collections of Catholic imagery, Marian iconography, or antique chromolithographs.
Condition
Good to very good antique condition. Light overall age toning consistent with age. Minor edge wear and soft handling marks visible at the margins. Colors remain strong and vibrant. No major tears or losses observed. Plate mark not present, as expected for chromolithography.
Framing Tips
This piece frames beautifully in a classic gold leaf frame to enhance the gold halos and crown. A deep dark blue, ivory, or soft champagne mat adds contrast and visual depth. For a more dramatic presentation, a black frame with gold inner slip also works extremely well.

Rest on the Flight into Egypt – Antique German Chromolithograph, 1900
This serene and deeply devotional antique German chromolithograph depicts the biblical scene known as the “Rest on the Flight into Egypt,” showing the Holy Family paused in quiet refuge during their journey of escape. The Virgin Mary is seated beneath ancient trees, gently cradling the Christ Child on her lap, while Saint Joseph rests nearby, weary from travel. The softly glowing halos emphasize the sacred presence of all three figures.
The composition is intimate and contemplative. Mary’s calm expression and protective posture convey maternal tenderness and spiritual strength, while the Christ Child sits peacefully, embodying innocence and divine promise. Saint Joseph, shown as a humble, exhausted guardian, reinforces the human struggle of the journey. The surrounding forest setting, with its shaded foliage and rocky ground, enhances the sense of temporary shelter and quiet protection.
Executed in rich, harmonious earth tones with subtle golden highlights, this chromolithograph reflects the finest traditions of late 19th–early 20th century German religious printing. The soft painterly shading, delicate facial features, and atmospheric depth are characteristic of high-quality devotional prints produced for Catholic homes, churches, schools, and monasteries.
This specific imagery of the Flight into Egypt held special meaning for families, symbolizing divine protection in times of hardship and uncertainty. Today, original examples are increasingly scarce, especially in well-preserved condition with strong color saturation.
A beautiful and meaningful piece for collectors of Catholic art, Holy Family imagery, Marian devotion, or traditional Christian wall art.
CONDITION REPORT
Good antique condition. Light, even age toning consistent with age. Minor edge wear, with small handling marks at the margins. No tears, no major losses, and no restoration. Colors remain warm and well-balanced, with excellent detail in the faces and garments.
FRAMING TIPS
This print will frame beautifully in a classic gilt or medium walnut wood frame. Pair with a warm ivory or softly antiqued cream mat and UV-protective glass for a refined devotional presentation.

Holy Family in the Carpenter’s Workshop, Antique German Chromolithograph c.1900

Holy Family in the Carpenter’s Workshop, Antique German Chromolithograph c.1900
This beautifully composed late nineteenth-century German chromolithograph portrays the Holy Family in an intimate domestic scene set in the carpenter’s workshop of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph is shown at work with hand tools, shaping wood with calm concentration, while the young Christ stands beside him holding a carpenter’s mallet and plane, symbolically participating in the labor of His earthly father. The Virgin Mary sits quietly nearby, spinning or winding thread, watching over both with serene devotion. All three figures bear softly glowing halos, emphasizing their sacred presence within this everyday setting.
The composition is rich in symbolic meaning. The carpenter’s tools and wooden beams reference Christ’s future Passion and the cross, while the youthful participation of Christ in Joseph’s trade underscores the themes of obedience, humility, and the sanctification of daily labor. The Madonna’s gesture toward her heart reflects maternal love and quiet contemplation. Through the open landscape beyond the wall, distant hills and buildings evoke the Holy Land and create depth and peace within the scene.
This type of Holy Family imagery was especially popular in Catholic households at the turn of the century, intended as a model for family life rooted in faith, work, and devotion. The scene offered both spiritual instruction and emotional warmth, presenting the Holy Family not in glory, but in humble daily life. Such images were widely displayed in private homes, schools, convents, and parish buildings.
The print was produced using traditional chromolithography, a complex multi-stone printing process that allowed for the rich, luminous colors and fine painterly detail visible in the drapery, skin tones, and landscape. The halos, floral elements, and wooden textures show exceptionally fine tonal control. This is a genuine period devotional chromolithograph and not a modern reproduction.
The lower margin printing confirms German production for the Catholic devotional market. Large-format Holy Family scenes of this quality and color preservation are becoming increasingly scarce and are highly desirable to collectors of religious iconography and historic devotional prints.
Condition report: Very good overall condition. Colors remain strong, fresh, and well saturated. Light age toning visible mainly in the margins. Minor handling wear consistent with age. No major tears, losses, or water damage observed. The image area itself is clean and visually striking.
Framing tips: This print displays beautifully in a soft gilt or antique gold frame that complements the warm tones of the workshop setting. A light ivory or warm cream mat enhances the colors without overpowering the scene. Dark walnut or cherry wood frames also work exceptionally well for church, rectory, or classic interior settings.

Antique Engraving of Kirby Hall Near Gretton, Northamptonshire, England c.1770
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Principal Front of Kirby Hall'.
Kirby Hall is an Elizabethan country house, located near Gretton, Northamptonshire, England. The nearest main town is Corby. One of the great Elizabethan houses of England, Kirby Hall was built for Sir Humphrey Stafford of Blatherwick, beginning in 1570. In 1575 the property was purchased by Sir Christopher Hatton of Holdenby,[1] Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It is a leading and early example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. Construction on the building began in 1570, based on the designs in French architectural pattern books and expanded in the Classical style over the course of the following decades. The house is now in a semi-ruined state with many parts roof-less although the Great Hall and state rooms remain intact. The gardens, with their elaborate "cutwork" design, complete with statues and urns, have been recently restored.
Anne of Denmark stayed at Kirby on 9 August 1605 while King James stayed at Rockingham Castle. King James stayed for three days in August 1616. During a royal progress Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox died at Kirby of the "spotted ague" on 30 July 1624.
The building and gardens are owned by the Earl of Winchilsea and are managed by English Heritage.
Kirby Hall has been used as a filming location in many productions. These include the following; an episode (6. Protest and Communication) of Kenneth Clark...

Christ the Shepherd, Beautiful Catholic Chromolithograph Artwork, ca.1900
Located in Langweer, NL
The Good Shepherd, c.1900 German Devotional Chromolithograph (Printed in Germany)
This early 20th-century German chromolithograph presents one of the most iconic and comforting Christian images: Christ as the Good Shepherd. Produced around 1900 by a major German devotional press, the print exemplifies the luminous colour layering, soft modelling, and serene atmosphere characteristic of high-quality chromolithography from this period. These works were widely distributed throughout Europe and the Americas and became treasured objects in Catholic homes, chapels, and pastoral settings.
Christ stands barefoot in a verdant landscape, gently holding a lamb to his chest while a flock gathers around him. The rich red cloak, delicate golden halo, and pastoral backdrop are rendered with exceptional detail and depth, achieved through multiple stone plates typical of fine chromolithographic production. The artwork conveys both theological symbolism and emotional warmth: the shepherd guiding and protecting his flock, the gentle lamb symbolising innocence, and the tranquil landscape offering a sense of peace and reassurance.
The lower margin features multilingual titles identifying the subject for international Catholic distribution: “Der Gute Hirt. The Good Shepherd. Le Bon Pasteur. Il Buon Pastore. El Divino Pastor.” This multilingual caption format is typical of German devotional publishers active from the late 19th into the early 20th century. The imprimatur line, “Imprimi permittitur. Ordinariatus episcopalis Limburgensis,” confirms that the image was officially approved for devotional use by the Catholic Church. The imprint “Printed in Germany” situates the work within one of the major German chromolithographic centres, likely Munich or Cologne, renowned for their beautifully saturated and technically refined religious images.
This is unquestionably an original chromolithograph, not a modern reproduction. The velvety colour fields, warm matte lithographic paper, subtle stippling, and natural toning all align with authentic early 20th-century stone-based printing. The crisp border text and preserved pigments further confirm its originality. The Good Shepherd was among the most cherished devotional themes of the period, and examples in this level of condition are increasingly rare and desirable among collectors of sacred art.
Condition Report: Very good condition. Colours bright and unfaded. Minor age toning and small, expected handling marks at the outer margins. No tears, creases, losses, or repairs. The plate text and imprimatur are sharp and fully legible.
Tips for Framing: Ideal for framing in a warm walnut or gilded frame to enhance the halo and red cloak. A cream or ivory mat complements the pastoral greens and highlights the central figure. A clean black frame with a wide mat offers a more contemporary presentation while keeping the devotional character intact.

Adoration of the Magi, c.1900 German Chromolithograph (Printed in Germany)
This beautiful early 20th-century German chromolithograph depicts the Adoration of the Magi, one of the most cherished subjects in Christian art. Printed around 1900–1920 by a major German devotional press, the work displays the hallmarks of high-quality chromolithographic craftsmanship: deep, luminous color; soft tonal transitions; richly layered stone-based pigments; and a gentle atmosphere that recalls late 19th-century academic religious painting.
The composition presents the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, Joseph beside her, and the Three Kings kneeling in reverence as they present their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. A young attendant appears in the doorway holding another offering. The figures are rendered with delicately modeled expressions, soft haloes, and meticulously detailed robes—particularly the embroidered white garment of the kneeling king and the golden cloak of the standing monarch. These chromatic effects were achieved through multiple lithographic stones, a technique that reached its peak among German devotional publishers during this period.
The multilingual caption along the lower margin identifies the print for international Catholic distribution: “Anbetung der Könige. Adoration of the Three Kings. L’adoration des rois mages. L’adorazione dei Magi. La adoración de los Reyes Magos. Pokłon Trzech Króli.” This reflects the broad export networks of German publishers who supplied churches, monasteries, and private devotional homes throughout Europe and the Americas. The note “Printed in Germany” confirms its origin, consistent with presses in Munich, Dresden, Cologne, and Limburg, known for producing richly colored religious chromolithographs from the late 19th to early 20th century.
This work is unquestionably an original chromolithograph, not a modern reproduction. The image shows true stone-layered color rather than digital or offset dots, and the paper retains the matte texture, subtle toning, and characteristic stippled pigment structure associated with genuine early 20th-century chromolithography. The presence of the multilingual caption, period typography, and the “Printed in Germany” imprint further authenticate the piece.
Condition Report: Very good condition. Colors vivid and unfaded. Minor age toning to outer margins and small handling marks consistent with age. No tears, losses, or repairs observed. The bottom title and imprint text are sharp and fully legible.
Tips for Framing: Ideal for framing in a gilded or walnut frame to complement the warm palette and ceremonial richness of the scene. A cream or ivory mat enhances the devotional character and highlights the luminous tones of the garments. A darker frame with a wide mat can also create a refined, museum-style presentation.

French Regional Costumes – Bretons, Parisians and Savoyard, c.1845
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: French Regional Costumes – Bretons, Parisians and Savoyard, c.1845
This charming mid-19th-century hand-colored lithograph illustrates the regional diversity of traditional French costumes, taken from the rare Parisian publication Le Monde en Estampes: Types et Costumes des Principaux Peuples de l’Univers, issued around 1845–1850. The lithograph was executed by J. Bocquin after drawings by Fossey, printed by Lemercier in Paris, one of the most respected lithographic ateliers of the century. Published by Amédée Bedelet, this series presented detailed portrayals of national and regional dress from across Europe and beyond, accompanied by text by Élisabeth Müller.
The composition, labeled “Europe – France,” presents an elegant gathering of figures from various French provinces. In the foreground, a Breton couple walks proudly in their regional attire—he in a broad-brimmed hat and embroidered vest, she in a richly colored dress and traditional lace cap. To their left, a seated woman from Caux wears a tall white headpiece, while another figure represents a Marin Maconnaise from Burgundy. At the center and right, mountaineers from the High Pyrenees converse with Parisians dressed...

KUMI SUGAÏ, JAPAN (1919 - 1996)
Kumi Sugaï was a painter, sculptor and print maker born in 1919 in Kobe, Japan. Sugaï first experimented with oil painting at age nine and became a student at the Osaka School of Fine Arts in 1933 when he was fourteen. He met with the Gutai Art Association founder, Jiro Yoshihara which had a huge impact on his further artistic development and experimentalism. He was part of the first generation of 20th-century Japanese artists to become acquainted with Western painting techniques (under the instructions of Yoshihara), but he also explored both typography and Japanese calligraphy, important in his subsequent work. Sugaï left art school prematurely to work in commercial advertising for Hankyu electric rail company from 1937 to 1945.
These formative years of practicing Western and traditional Japanese mediums gave a dual foundation to his future work. He dedicated himself to painting and moved to Paris in 1952, enrolling at the Académie de la grand chaumière, being one of the first generation of the post-war Japanese artists to join the international avant-garde art scene. Sugai was immediately noticed in Paris for his delicate touch and use of abstract gestures resembling primitive forms. He had his first solo show at Galerie Craven in 1954. In 1955 he made his first work in edition (Diable Rouge, a lithograph) and decided that from now on print work (lithographs, etchings and later silkscreens) was going to be an important part of his oeuvre. One of the reasons was to make his work more accessible. Between 1955 and 1996 Sugaï produced a little under 400 works in edition.
Considered part of the École de Paris (School of Paris) and the Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism) movements, in 1962 he began to move from calligraphic, mainly monochromatic, organic motifs to more hard-edge geometric forms painted with clear colors. This aesthetic was more often than not influenced by speeding the curves of the freeways surrounding Paris in his beloved Porsche. He was possessed with speed and in a lot of his work we find abstracted roads (The S shape) details of roadsigns, parkings and in general an abstract visual language inspired by what he would see through his window moving at great speed. City and rural Landscapes transformed into simple colored compositions. Sugaï found great joy in the act of repetition and some iconic shapes have been appearing in his work throughout his whole career, first loosely and soft in his early etchings, paintings and lithographs, later hard edged and straight in his silkscreens.
Sugai died in Kobe in 1996.
His artworks were shown in numerous exhibitions around the world and most of his paintings are in the collections of well-known museums (Such as MOMA, the Guggenheim and Centre Pompidou) and important collectors. Vintage Objects...
