This refined matching pair of antique butterfly engravings originates from Parts 1–2 of the rare third and final series of 'Nederlandsche Vlinders', published in The Hague by Martinus Nijhoff between 1905 and 1913. The work was executed under the direction of A. Brants as a continuation of the legendary Sepp tradition in Dutch entomological illustration, first begun in 1728. This late series represents the final chapter of one of the most important illustrated natural history projects ever produced in the Netherlands. Both plates depict the life cycle of Satyrus Statilinus, showing the butterfly in multiple wing positions alongside detailed studies of caterpillar, chrysalis, egg, and host plant. The scientific accuracy is paired with remarkably subtle hand coloring, revealing soft browns, muted greens, and carefully shaded contours.
