The Butterfly series for Ash began as a sentiment to her late Father. Butterflies began to appear in unexplainable ways after his passing, the artist later discovered that Butterflies represent spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope, and life - she goes on to say: "The butterfly series draws inspiration from Rivera's quote 'Butterflies can't see their wings. They can't see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can.'" After coming to the fruition that Butterflies pose as not only a symbol for beauty and rebirth, Almonte felt a feeling of deep comfort. Her passion for sharing this message of hope and renewal through her colorfully diverse canvases is achieved with resilience leaving her audience glimmering much like the inner voice and the spark of Joie de vivre that fuels her purpose in life to create. Leon Foster Jones was a painter of landscapes, an etcher, a lithographer, and an educator. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, his father held the position of overseer in one of the hosiery mills in the Manchester area. In approximately 1901, he married Josephine Currier. During the initial years of their marriage, the couple resided in Concord, New Hampshire. They made Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York their permanent home in 1910, although the artist had begun working there as early as 1907.
Numerous sources indicate that throughout his life, Jones gained recognition primarily for his paintings and etchings featuring historical sites across Long Island. Alexis Portilla was born in Mexico City in 1965, and has lived in New York since 1970.
He holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from Pratt Institute.
His work can be found in public and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad, including The New York Public Library, Penn State University, Harvard University,
Warner Brothers Music Group, Pepsi Co., PricewaterhouseCoopers, Norwest Venture
Partners, and Mikasa Corporation. In addition, his work is in hundreds of private collections in the United States, England, France, and Germany.
For more than 20 years, Portilla’s work has been regularly exhibited at prominent venues
throughout the United States.
His work has been the subject of 10 solo exhibitions at established galleries in New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Hong Kong. His work has been exhibited in museum group exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan,
Hofstra University Museum in New York, and Monmouth Museum in New Jersey, as well as
numerous gallery group exhibitions in New York, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, and Philadelphia.
Portilla’s work has received international press attention and has been reviewed in
several publications, including Artnews. He has been a faculty instructor at Columbia University, where he taught printmaking to graduate and postgraduate students.
