The Likes of Us
By Maya Hayuk
Located in New York, NY
Maya Hayuk The Likes of Us, 2017 Screenprint with spray paint in colors on Arches paper Signed, numbered 91/100, dated, and titled in pencil along lower edge. Accompanied by COA hand signed by the artist. 20 × 15 inches Unframed This work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the artist. Excellent condition. Published by the artist; Printed by Haven Press, Brooklyn, New York More about Maya Hayuk: Maya Hayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with an extensive background in a wide range of generative art and social practices. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into elaborate, painterly abstractions, thus creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike. Her large-scale, improvised murals speak to the artist’s obsession with symmetry, “perfect imperfection” and outer/ inner space. Her works look to expanding consciousness and perception to find patterns and interconnectivity. Ultimately, the traditional and the contemporary blend into new harmonic, dissonant, optimistic, experimental compositions. Hayuk considers her studio painting and mural practices as both inversely relational and symbiotic. Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including FRAC Museum in Dunkerque, FR (2019), The Ukrainian Museum New York (2017), The Bowery Wall, NY (2014), The Hammer Museum, LA (2013), The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada (2013), Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2012); Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York (2011); Musee E.A.V., Rio De Janiero, Brazil (2011); Matucana Artspace, Santiago, Chile (2009); Democratic National Convention, Denver, Colorado (2008); and Monster Island, Brooklyn, New York (2005-2011). Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as Streetopia, The Luggage Store, San Francisco (2012); Black Light & Outer Space, Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn, New York (2011); Rojo Nova, Museum of Image and Sound, Sao Paolo, Brazil (2010); Contemporary Art 2010, Ukrainian Institute of America, New York (2010); Sous l’es bombs, Musee International des Arts Modeste, Sete, France (2007); The Zine Unbound: Kults, Werewolves, and Sarcastic Hippies, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2005). In 2018, Hayuk gave a TEDx Talk from The Center of Art and Design (CAD) in Brussels, Belgium, which recounts the arc of her developing career. Maya Hayuk’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally including FRAC Museum (FR), The Ukrainian Museum (US), The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art (Brussels, Belgium), The Embassy of the United States of America (Sanaa, Yemen), The Embassy of the United States of America Residence (Costa Rica), MOCA Jacksonville (FL), The Ullens Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), The Dean Collection (US) and Wayne Coyne...

Thin-lipped Armourer I: W. H. Auden poetry with Henry Moore, Yorkshire landscape
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
This darkly-shaded portrait of two figures is one of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, Thin-lipped Armourer features two figures subsumed in crosshatched shadow. The figure on the left can barely be seen, and the hollows of his eyes recall a skull. Numerous Moore prints from this series include two heads, perhaps relating to the first lines of Auden’s poem Lullaby. Lullaby was the first poem Moore read for this project, which begins: “Lay your sleeping head, my love / Human on my faithless arm; / Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from / Thoughtful children, and the grave / Proves the child ephemeral: / But in my arms till break of day / Let the living creature lie, / Mortal, guilty, but to me / The entirely beautiful.” This print evinces Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Thin-lipped Armourer I is one of a group of lithographs...

By Sam Gilliam
Located in New York, NY
Sam Gilliam Buoy Landscape IV, 1982 Color relief print, etching, screenprint, drypoint, aquatint and roulette all from deeply etched copper plates, on handmade wove paper 31 1/2 × 24 inches Hand signed and numbered 3/25 in graphite pencil Hand-signed by artist, Signed by artist, numbered, and dated in pencil and blind-stamped by printer-publisher on lower right, titled in pencil on lower left, recto Unframed with elegant deckled edges Rare vintage intaglio and relief, all from deeply etched copper plates. Other works from this series are in the permanent collections of major museums institutions like the Smithsonian, so they are quite scarce on the open market. Steven M. Andersen (Printer) Philip Barber (Printer) Hang Nguyen (Printer) Stephanie Nowack (Printer) Michael Reid (Printer) Daniel Rounds (Printer) Vermillion Editions Limited (Publisher) Sam Gilliam Biography: Sam Gilliam was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed. As an artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change. Gilliam pursued a pioneering course in which experimentation was the only constant. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. In addition to a traveling retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2005, Sam Gilliam was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Philip Morris Branch, New York (1993); J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (1996); Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. A semi-permanent installation of Gilliam’s paintings opened at Dia:Beacon in August 2019. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Sam Gilliam, Green April, 1969, acrylic on canvas, 98 x 271 x 3 7/8 inches (248.9 x 688.3 x 9.8 cm), Collection of Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel, Switzerland, Courtesy of David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, photography by Lee Thompson...

The exhibition included recent paintings in which the artist continues to meditate on the melancholy of the Psycho Spaghetti Westerns in complex pictures that conflate his signature elements with the visual devices, perspectival techniques, and refined atmospheres of old master paintings to depict the romantic road trip of youth reduced to roadside dystopia. Provenance: donated by Ed Ruscha to a major charitable arts organization. About Ed Ruscha: There are things that I’m constantly looking at that I feel should be elevated to greater status, almost to philosophical status or to a religious status. In 1956, Ruscha moved from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, where he attended the Chouinard Art Institute. During his time in art school, he had been painting in the manner of Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, and came across a reproduction of Jasper Johns’s Target...
