Hommage a Caissa (for the Marcel Duchamp Fund of the American Chess Foundation)
By Marcel Duchamp
Located in New York, NY
Marcel Duchamp Hommage a Caissa (for the Marcel Duchamp Fund of the American Chess Foundation), 1966 Silkscreen Poster with Gold Matting Frame included Very scarce 1960s collectors item - rarely seen! Measurements: Framed: 26.25 x 21.25 x 0.5 inch Print: 26 x 21 inches Unsigned Accompanied by Certificate of Guarantee issued by Alpha 137 Gallery This extremely rare and historic invitation/exhibition poster was designed by Duchamp on the occasion of a group exhibition at New York's Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery for the Marcel Duchamp Fund of the Americas Chess Foundation in 1966. The exhibition was called "Hommage à Caissa." Duchamp invited 36 artists to contribute. It was in this show , held at the gallery at 978 Madison Ave, as of 1962 the Daniel Cordier & Arne Ekstrom Gallery, where Dalí revealed his chess set. Duchamp used the RSVP cards he sent to various artists as a design for this invitation. Many of these RSVP cards had the artist's autographs, and a few, like the one from Alexander Calder, included personal notes to Duchamp. Some of the more famous of the 36 artists featured in print who participated by donating works to this fundraiser include: Jasper Johns, Karl Gerstner, David Hare, Salvador Dali, Enrico Donati, Roberto Matta, Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Calder, Dorothea Tanning, Jean Tinguely, Niki De St. Phalle, George Segal, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Meret Oppenheim, Alfonso Ossorio, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Man Ray, Joan Miro, Rene Magritte, Richard Lindner, Roy Lichtenstein, Arman, Enrico Baj, Hans Bellmer, Victor Brauner, Alexander Liberman, William Copley, Cleve Gray and several others. However -- did you notice one name was noticeably absent? Andy Warhol! How could that be? Well, it turns out Andy Warhol has actually expected to be invited to exhibit but for some reason was overlooked. He did, however, attend the opening and filmed Duchamp in one of his famous "Screen Tests...

Max Ernst, The Hundred Headless Woman, from XXe Siecle, 1958
By Max Ernst
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph and pochoir by Max Ernst (1891–1976), titled La femme 100 tetes (The Woman with 100 Heads), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXe Annee, No. 10 (double) Mars 1958, originates from the 1958 edition published by Societe Internationale dArt XXe Siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1958. La femme 100 tetes reflects Ernsts distinctive synthesis of dream logic, visual poetry, and psychological transformation during one of the most influential periods of his Surrealist production. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Atelier Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris. Artwork Details: Artist: Max Ernst (1891–1976) Title: La femme 100 tetes (The Woman with 100 Heads) Medium: Lithograph and pochoir on velin paper Dimensions: 12.5 x 9.75 inches (31.75 x 24.77 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1958 Publisher: Societe Internationale dArt XXe Siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris Printer: Atelier Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXe Annee, No. 10 (double) Mars 1958, published by Societe Internationale dArt XXe Siecle, Paris; printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1958 About the Publication: Gualtieri di San Lazzaros XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. The 1960 issue, XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, No. 14, showcased Daphnis et Chloe, one of Chagalls most celebrated lithographic subjects, coinciding with his work on the monumental suite of lithographs inspired by the same pastoral tale, published by Teriade. Through this publication, San Lazzaro further cemented Chagalls reputation as the modern poet of color and love, uniting myth, nature, and emotion in visual form. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential record of 20th century modernism, celebrated for its seamless integration of fine art, literature, and design. About the Artist: Max Ernst (1891–1976) was a German-French painter, sculptor, printmaker, and poet whose groundbreaking imagination and experimental techniques made him one of the most revolutionary figures of 20th century art, a founding member of both Dada and Surrealism who dismantled traditional notions of art through chance, dream imagery, and psychological exploration; born in Bruhl, Germany, he studied philosophy and psychology at the University of Bonn before rejecting academic convention to pursue art, inspired by Symbolism, Cubism, and the early abstractions of Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky; after the trauma of World War I propelled him toward the Dada movement in Cologne, he began creating seminal collages that fused scientific diagrams and Victorian engravings into surreal dreamscapes; by 1922 he had moved to Paris and joined a circle of avant-garde luminaries including Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Andre Breton, each of whom shared his fascination with the irrational and the unseen; Ernsts invention of frottage (rubbing) and grattage (scraping) revolutionized modern painting, revealing textures and hidden images below the surface and allowing chance to participate in creation; his visionary paintings—from The Elephant Celebes and Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale to Europe After the Rain II—blend myth, science, and dream into symbolic landscapes that remain among the defining masterpieces of Surrealism; a restless innovator, he expanded into sculpture with enigmatic totemic forms such as Capricorne, echoing the equilibrium of Calders mobiles and the conceptual wit of Duchamp; fleeing Nazi-occupied France during World War II, he emigrated to the United States with the support of Peggy Guggenheim, influencing Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, and Willem de Kooning before returning to Europe to refine his poetic, alchemical approach to art; represented in MoMA, the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, and major museums worldwide, Ernst remains a cornerstone of modern art whose legacy continues to influence generations of artists. His highest auction record was achieved by Le roi jouant avec la reine (The King Playing with the Queen) (1944), which sold for approximately 24.4 million USD at Christies New York in November 2022. Joan Miro, Summer, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1937
By Joan Miró
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Joan Miro (1893–1983), titled L'Ete (Summer), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 1, originates from the 1937 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1937. This early and vibrant composition captures Miro's poetic vision of nature and the cosmos, rendered through biomorphic forms and rhythmic abstraction. L'Ete reflects Miro's fascination with the cyclical harmony of life and his belief in art as an extension of natural forces. Through his distinctive visual language—combining organic shapes, symbolic gestures, and luminous color—Miro conveys a profound sense of vitality and dreamlike wonder, embodying the spirit of renewal that defines his oeuvre. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the leading modernists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Joan Miro (1893–1983) Title: L'Ete (Summer), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 1, 1937 Medium: Lithograph on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 inches Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued Date: 1937 Publisher: Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne reference: Miro, Joan, et al. Miro, L'oeuvre Graphique: Musee d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, 1974, illustration 395. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 1, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1937 About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine's inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi and the Nu Bleu series, stands as a testament to Matisse's enduring genius and to the publication's legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. About the Artist: Joan Miro (1893–1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose visionary imagination and lyrical abstraction made him one of the most influential and beloved artists of the 20th century. Born in Barcelona, Miro drew inspiration from Catalan folk art, Romanesque frescoes, and the luminous landscapes of Mont-roig del Camp, developing a deep connection to nature that infused his work with vitality and symbolism. After formal training at the Escola d'Art in Barcelona, he absorbed the lessons of Post-Impressionism and Cubism before moving to Paris in the early 1920s, where he became a leading figure in the Surrealist movement. There, Miro forged a personal visual language of biomorphic shapes, floating symbols, and radiant color harmonies that reflected both spontaneity and spiritual depth. In creative dialogue with peers such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he helped revolutionize modern art by dissolving the boundaries between abstraction and dream imagery. Miro's inventive approach extended far beyond painting, embracing sculpture, ceramics, and monumental public commissions that redefined how art could interact with space and emotion. His expressive freedom and gestural abstraction profoundly influenced later artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Antoni Tapies, and Joan Mitchell, inspiring generations who sought to merge instinct, color, and imagination. Today, Miro's work remains a cornerstone of modernism, prized by collectors and celebrated in major museums worldwide. His highest auction record was achieved by Peinture (Etoile Bleue) (1927), which sold for £23,561,250 (approximately $37 million) at Sotheby's, London, on June 19, 2012.
