Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Organic Folded Edge Amber Bowl, NY Art Glass
By Thomas Kelly
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Striking Organic Modern bowl was hand blown with fluid, folded edge. The colored yellow, mottled blue, and mocha brown glass inclusions were placed in abstract, graphic pattern on amber and yellow background, with the whole structure enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Minimal color palette balances complex shape of the piece, and the subtle flow of the pattern guides the eye along the folded glass surfaces.
The vase is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom.
Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass Studio is regarded among America's prominent contemporary glass studios.
Thomas Kelly is an established glass artist working in Vitrix Hot Glass studio in Corning, New York. He started in the glass studios of Alex Brand and Thomas Buechner where he had the opportunity to learn from two distinctly different artists, each having their own unique talents; Kelly worked for 10 years with Thomas Buechner III at Vitrix Hot Glass Studio, developing his glass working skills and aesthetic sensitivity. At Vitrix, visiting artists such as Lino Tagliapietra and Fritz Dreisbach...

Wood-Fired Hand Built Bowl with Shino Glaze
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work. Depending on its location in the kiln and any glaze that was applied, the effects can vary widely. This piece has a traditional Shino Glaze...
