Wonderfully unique up-cycled retro-futurism inspired "steampunk" rocketship sculpture by late New York City artist, Chris Spollen (August, 1952 – September, 2019). Chris Spollen had been a life-long resident of Staten Island. He was accepted into The High School of Art and Design, and then received a full scholarship to Parsons School Of Design NYC in 1971. Over the past forty years in his role as an award-winning illustrator, Chris was a pioneer in the field of graphic art and Illustration. Not only did he have his own home-built darkroom and a professional stat camera in his home, but he was also one of the first to introduce the computer in 1990 into the world of illustration. With it being his specialization, Chris devoted his passion and love for illustration to his established company, Moonlight Press Studio; after 30 years of entrepreneurship, he began teaching his knowledge of art and computer to the students at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which continued for some 20 very joyful years as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Spollen’s work has won numerous awards and is featured in many permanent collections, including The New Britain Museum of Illustration, The Museum of American Illustration, The Norman Rockwell Museum, the US Air Force Art Program, and The Pentagon. He’s also published several books of his illustrations; the latest one, The Art of Recycling, is a three hundred page full colored book of Chris Spollen’s recent sculptures published in 2015. In the summer of 2019, Chris Spollen showcased his Solo exhibition “Modeling the Future” at the Fashion Institute of Technology; and immediately after, pieces from the exhibition were transported and displayed at Bergdorf Goodman’s display...

Foundry molds and patterns are wooden tools, carved out or built up to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. To make a wooden mold, wood needs to be stacked up, like a relief, or cut-out, like a sunken relief, with handles or other pieces to grab and pick up the mold from the molding material. Individual pattern pieces that get packed into the molding material are carved and shaped. The space or forms that these pieces make in the molding material will be the inverse of the final cast piece.

Dobson, Frank (1886–1963). British sculptor, born in London, the son of an illustrator of the same name. From 1902 to 1904 he worked as an assistant to William Reynolds-Stephens. He then spent two years in Cornwall, earning his living with landscape watercolours, before winning a scholarship to Hospitalfield Art Institute, Arbroath, where he studied 1906–10.
After returning to London, he continued his studies at the City and Guilds School, Kennington, then again lived in Cornwall, where he shared a studio with Cedric Morris in Newlyn. His early work consisted mainly of paintings, the few surviving examples showing how impressed he was by Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibitions (Stanhope Forbes, whom Dobson met in Newlyn, had been shocked by his modernism). He made his first carving in 1913, but his first one-man exhibition—at the Chenil Gallery, London, in 1914—consisted of paintings and drawings. VALERIE “VALLY” WIESELTHIER (Austrian-American, 1895 – 1945) was an outstanding ceramic artist. She was born to a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria. Her father, Wilhelm Wieselthier was a lawyer. Valluy attended theWiener Frauenacademie in Vienna from 1912 to 1914 and studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Rosalinda Rothhansl, Kolo Moser, Jodef Hoffmann and Michael Powolny from 1914 to 1920. In addition, she worked as an auxiliary nurse during the First World War.
From 1917 to 1922, she worked for the Wiener Werkstatte. From 1922 to 1927, she ran her own ceramic workshop in cooperation with the Augarten porcelain factory, which was newly founded in 1923, but also with other companies such as Friedrich Goldschider, Gmundner Keramik and Lobmeyr.
Her expressive and humorous porcelain figures attracted attention at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modern in Paris in 1925 and are considered typical examples of the Art Deco style style. From 1928, the artist increasingly moved her center of life to the United States. She went to the International Exhibition of Ceramic Art in New York City in October 1928.
