Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's encaustic Painting of Nothing #76 is made of ceramic raw materials, dry pigment and wax. This piece is part of his ongoing Painting of Nothing Series. Hirsch applies the waxy mix with a brush onto redwood plywood backed structures with two-inch wood strips all around and used various torches to layer, flux, bubble and blend. "Waxy and very tactile, they are probably the work Mark Rothko would have done had he spent most of his life in clay. Hirsch’s paintings have the nuance, subtle texture, and color shifts that become evident in blown-up photographs of his ceramic objects as well as a similar presence." Signed and dated en verso by the artist. This painting ship directly from the artist’s studio in Rochester, NY.

Born in France in 1964, Marc-Antoine Goulard began his career as a classical musician. He studied the flute and composition at the Paris Conservatory of Music where he graduated with honors and became a concertist. In 1985, he left France for the USA to study saxophone and jazz at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. While music, with its foundation of tone and composition, provided him the means for expression, it is in painting that Goulard found his creative voice.

A humorous rural/domestic scene — a man in overalls, holding a fishing rod in one hand and a small bucket with, in all likelihood, a meager catch in the other, caught mid-gesture, hides from his wife around the corner of his own house, remaining invisible to his wife, while the woman leans out the window calling for him. This painting is most likely was an interior (story) illustration or an unpublished/commissioned narrative canvas, rather than a Post cover. Robinson did a lot of slice-of-life interiors with similar humorous domestic setups in the 1910s–30s, but many were never reproduced.
