Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), and George Vincent (1796-1832). These artists painted in the Dutch style, though both are British. Each has had experience with Dutch masters that influence their work. George Vincent’s work is perhaps even closer to this than Hulk’s. Vincent paints the trees and skies with the warm hues of light infused on the work. Here, the sky has blue but also a khaki or tan shade, roughed into the blue and white. It is an unusual color in skies, yet Vincent shows us the light through clouds castingva darker shade. The trees are varied greens but also yellowed leaves, as in autumn.
Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky.
Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.

Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island.
In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs.

Springtime, 'In the Meadow' by Cornelis Bouter (1888-1966) is a Dutch painting with figures and landscape in an impressionist style with early spring blossoms. Idyllic scene by a river under tree blossoms, this fine oil on canvas painting is very well presented in an original frame. Children play while mother peels apples in a pleasant afternoon setting. Bouter is known for his paintings of mother and children in interiors. This is one of one of his outdoor paintings in lighter color and lovely landscape. Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s.
Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art.
Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle.
This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...
