His estate sold at Dorotheum auction, Vienna, December 1 to 6, year 1915.
This exceptional cartel clock we are offering here is one of the most representative works of Rocaille art during the reign Louis XV.
The case is entirely executed in gilt bronze, very finely chiselled and depicts at its top a pastoral scene with a duo of musicians. A standing flute player, accompanied by a singer sitting on a rock holding a sheet music book. The couple are accompanied by a dog sitting quietly next to it and scratching its ear.
The whole is embellished with flowery and foliage branches, volutes and large scrolls of acanthus, enclosing reserves lined with crimson velvet fabrics with pierced brass plates with stylized foliage and scrolls.
This bucolic scene draws its inspiration from the paintings by Nicolas Lancret and Antoine Watteau.
The circular white enamelled dial is signed “Regnauld à Chaalons”, indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals by two pierced and gilded brass hands; the movement plate on the back is also signed.
It strikes the hours, the half-hours, as well as the quarters, which was quite rare.

A gilt bronze wall-clock decorated with Renaissance style motifs, such as scalloped scrolls, pomegranates, a faun head and putti framing the dial.
In decorative arts, the "cuir découpé" motif (cut leather) recalls a cut leather or metal piece, wound like stylized volutes. This decorative motif is characteristic of the French Renaissance as showed in the inner decoration of the Galerie François I (1535) at the Château de Fontainebleau. Used by artists on tapestry and engravings, this motif was back into fashion in the 19th century.
Louis-Constant Sévin (1821-1888) designed as soon as 1839 silver-smith’s objects for famous firms like Denière, Froment-Meurice, Morel and Duponchel. During the Revolution in 1848, he joined Morel in London, as workshop manager and designed pieces that Morel exhibited in 1851. Back in France, he worked in 1855 for Ferdinand Barbedienne as sculptor-ornemanist until the end of his life. Sévin’s works are considerable, he designed furniture bronzes for the “hôtel de La Païva.” At the London Exhibition in 1862, he was awarded a medal for the artistic excellence of the furniture he designed and which was exhibited by F. Barbedienne. He won a second class medal at the Union centrale des Arts décoratifs Exhibition...

A sculpted bird sits atop the bountiful ornamentation of this piece. The enameled, white clock face marks the hours with Roman numerals and the minutes with Arabic numerals, and the clock hands are sculpted, openwork gilt bronze.
