Washing Dishes
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Left A woman and young boy are washing dishes together. Charles Leslie Thrasher was made famous by signing on for a long-term contract to paint every single weeks cover for Liberty Magazine. It was a back-breaking commitment to work at such a pace and an even greater challenge to come up with enough original cover ideas. The latter problem was partially solved by settling on a continuing story line, which followed a couple's courtship, marriage and children. It was a popular series, later made into a movie called "For the Love of Lil." His marriage provided the ingredients for it, and he served as his own model for the hero. As the presentation was humorous and light, the artwork tended to be lightweight, below the standards of his earlier cover work for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and his advertising illustrations Cream of Wheat, Fisk Tires...

Three Boys, Woman s Day Magazine Cover
By Spencer Douglass Crockwell
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Three young boys talking. One of the boys is playing with a military jacket on the chair. Signed lower center. The illustrations of Douglas Crockwell were often simply signed “Douglass” to avoid confusion with the signature of Norman Rockwell, particularly since their work was being published on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post during the same period. Necessary too, because Crockwell also worked very realistically, and like Rockwell, was particularly good with children. Their backgrounds, however, were entirely different. Crockwell was born in Chicago, Ohio, and took his degree in Science at Washington University, followed by study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He received his first commission for a cover for The Saturday Evening Post in 1933, and this was followed by many more, as well as work for other periodicals and a long list of national advertisers. During the ‘thirties, he also completed Post Office murals in Vermont, New York State and Mississippi, and began to work on experimental animated films. The films, and inventing a “pan-stereo” viewing...

Drying Nets - Mont Saint Pierre
By John Ford Clymer
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Signature: Signed Lower Right Framed Dimensions: 25" X 29 1/4" Drying Nets - Mont Saint Pierre is an antique 1930s signed oil on canvas painting by the important American artist and illustrator John Clymer, signed lower right and titled on the back stretcher bar in the artist's hand. The work is a fine American impressionist painting with dazzling impasto work, particularly on the nets being hoisted and the frothing sea. Showing a rugged scene of two fishermen on the coast of the St Lawrence river in New Brunswick Canada, this appears to date to the 1930s when the artist resided in Connecticut. The painting is housed in a fabulous and original-to-the-painting American Arts & Crafts aesthetic Plein Air carved gold frame. --- John Clymer, renowned for his historic and artistic contribution in documenting the American Frontier, was born in Ellensburg, Washington in 1907. Clymer was fascinated by art at an early age, and began taking art correspondence courses in art during high school. At the age of sixteen, he sold two drawings to the Colt Firearms...
