Peggy O Neil, Redbook Magazine Interior Illustration, 1932
By Mead Schaeffer
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Illustration for “Women America Remembers: Peggy O’Neil” by Arthur D. Howden Smith for The Red Book Magazine, published March 1930, illustrated pages 20-21. This painting by Mead Schaeffer depicts a romantic encounter between Peggy O'Neil and her first husband, John Timberlake. The accompanying caption reads: "It was inevitable that Peggy should fall in love—and she did, with John Timberlake, who had little besides his face to recommend him." It was created in 1930 for the third installment of The Red Book Magazine’s “Women America Remembers” series, which features stories of women famous for “personality, beauty, wit or audacity, or because of the tragedy left in their train.” Margaret ("Peggy") O'Neil Eaton remains a figure of historical intrigue, primarily for her central role in the "Petticoat Affair," a significant political scandal during Andrew Jackson's presidency. The circumstances surrounding Peggy’s marriage to John Eaton, occurring shortly after the death of her first husband, John Timberlake, and her family’s background as tavern-keepers, coupled with her perceived impudent personality, subjected her to intense social scrutiny in Washington D.C. Upon John Eaton's appointment as Secretary of War, Peggy faced social ostracism led by Floride Calhoun, wife of Vice President John Calhoun...

“The Everlasting Doors, ” Illustration for Cosmopolitan
By Frank Xavier Leyendecker
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Illustration for “The First Works” by Basil King as part of the series “The Everlasting Doors” for Cosmopolitan, published July 1920, pages 38-39. In his series “The Everlasting Doors,” Basil King delves into his belief that humanity underestimates its own psychic powers. King expresses a profound desire to rediscover the “lost laws of the universe,” believing these ancient principles could lead to remarkable advancements, including “the abolishing of Death and other wonders.” Enhancing the published text was Frank Leyenecker’s dramatic illustration, which framed and decorated the pages. Leyendecker presumably later added the poetic lines, “Relax and lay your head on my shoulder. Give me your hand and I will lead you on. We cannot make mistakes because the light is too strong to allow of anyone missing the way,” to fill in the white space, transforming the painting into a more complete and visually resonant artwork. The Milky Way, Liberty Magazine Cover
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original cover for Liberty magazine, published August 17, 1929. Lil calls Sandy down to a nice breakfast to be served in her new fruit dishes, as she asks Sandy to bring her purse and materials to fix the carpet runner, which he forgets. Lil is horrified to find her sideboard key in baby Ulysses’ mouth and she proceeds to feed the baby while asking Sandy to give her updates on a recent triple suicide outlined in the newspaper. Ulysses pounds his cereal spoon, sending sprays of milk across the table onto Sandy’s elbow and Lil’s new fifty-dollar negligee. (Liberty magazine, August 17, 1929, p. 38) “For the Love o’ Lil: The Picture Story of an American Family” In 1926, under his long-term contract to produce a cover per week for Liberty magazine, Leslie Thrasher introduced a signature cast of characters that appeared each week, telling a serialized story through his illustrations. Liberty touted its new cover serial as “something no magazine has ever done before…Heretofore, all magazine cover...

By Anton Otto Fischer
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed "A.O.F 19" Lower Left "Man & Woman in Disagreement" Long affiliated with The Saturday Evening Post (nearly 50 years), he did dozens of covers and much story art, most notably the long-running Tug-Boat Annie and with maritime painting, Fischer was more versatile than depicting the sail and dreadnaughts when given a chance. Still, he's best known for painting the sea, her beauty and her dangers (whether hurricanes or U-Boats). It's no surprise that his oils graced such titles as The Cruise of the Cachalot: Round the World After Sperm Whales, Treasure Island, The Mutineers, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea...
