"Ringmaster"
By Charles E. Chambers
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Story illustration, image of man on couch, woman in chair writing Charles Edward Chambers was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, studied at the Chicago Art Institute, and later the Art Students League in New York with George Bridgman. His illustrations were extremely skillful, marked by subtlety of value and color. He early learned to adapt his method of painting for the best possible reproduction, and to insure fidelity of printing, he often followed the assignments through to the hands of the engraver who made the plates. Chambers divided his time almost equally between editorial and advertising assignments. Among his advertising commissions was an outstanding series of portraits of musicians for Steinway & Sons. His distinctive illustrations for billboards, notably for Chesterfield and Palmolive Soap...

And Why Not?, Liberty Magazine Cover
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
“And Why Not?: Lil and Sandy Warm Up Their Imagination,” original cover for Liberty magazine, published April 7, 1928 As Mr. and Mrs. Morse leave for a date night at the local lodge, Lil and Sandy spend an evening in front of the fireplace at the Morse home. Sandy turns on sentimental music, gathers marshmallows and a toasting fork, and lights the logs in his father-in-law’s fireplace. The fireplace’s golden glow becomes a picture frame for the couple’s dreams of their future son. Sandy excitedly imagines their baby going to college and being the “head of every class, scholarships galore, and captain of basketball, hockey, crew, and football.” Little Sandy is also imagined to be a brave soldier and even serve as future president of the United States. “Dreams of their son…red embers on the hearth…Their fireplace fantasy!” (Liberty magazine, April 7, 1928) “For the Love o’ Lil: The Picture Story of an American Family” In 1926, under his long-term contract to produce a cover per week for Liberty magazine, Leslie Thrasher introduced a signature cast of characters that appeared each week, telling a serialized story through his illustrations. Liberty touted its new cover serial as “something no magazine has ever done before…Heretofore, all magazine cover...

Argument in Steel Mill s Office
By Herbert Paus
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Illustration for American Magazine Story, Page 20. January, 1931 Signed Lower Center Herbert Paus was a native of Minneapolis and got his first job as a cartoonist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Ambitious to become an illustrator, he enrolled in the Fine Arts School there, and later found employment in a Chicago art studio. Eventually, he moved to New York where he became a freelance illustrator. Paus had a strong sense of design, which was ideally suited to posters. He was a member of the Government’s committee on pictorial publicity during World War I, and painted many effective posters to support the war effort. This approach, combined with a striking use of vivid color, was carried over into his magazine illustrations and cover designs for such magazines as Woman’s Home Companion, American Magazine, The Youth’s Companion, and Collier’s. Among his many outstanding book illustrations were those for Maurice Maeterlinck’s play “Betrothal” as told for children entitled Tyltyl. Paus also painted for such advertisers as Hart, Schaffner & Marx, Goodyear, General Motors, Certain-teed, and Victor Records...

By Anton Otto Fischer

Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Left Sight Window 24.00" x 22.00" Image of an inspector at a crime scene aboard ship. Saturday Evening Post Illustration. Long affiliated with The Saturday Evening Post (nearly 50 years), he did dozens of covers and much story art, most notably the long-running Tug-Boat Annie and with maritime painting, Fischer was more versatile than depicting the sail and dreadnaughts when given a chance. Still, he's best known for painting the sea, her beauty and her dangers (whether hurricanes or U-Boats). It's no surprise that his oils graced such titles as The Cruise of the Cachalot: Round the World After Sperm Whales, Treasure Island, The Mutineers, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea...
