This painting by Mead Schaeffer depicts a romantic encounter between Peggy O'Neil and her first husband, John Timberlake. In his series “The Everlasting Doors,” Basil King delves into his belief that humanity underestimates its own psychic powers. King expresses a profound desire to rediscover the “lost laws of the universe,” believing these ancient principles could lead to remarkable advancements, including “the abolishing of Death and other wonders.”
Enhancing the published text was Frank Leyenecker’s dramatic illustration, which framed and decorated the pages. Leyendecker presumably later added the poetic lines, “Relax and lay your head on my shoulder. Give me your hand and I will lead you on. We cannot make mistakes because the light is too strong to allow of anyone missing the way,” to fill in the white space, transforming the painting into a more complete and visually resonant artwork.

Lil calls Sandy down to a nice breakfast to be served in her new fruit dishes, as she asks Sandy to bring her purse and materials to fix the carpet runner, which he forgets. Lil is horrified to find her sideboard key in baby Ulysses’ mouth and she proceeds to feed the baby while asking Sandy to give her updates on a recent triple suicide outlined in the newspaper. Ulysses pounds his cereal spoon, sending sprays of milk across the table onto Sandy’s elbow and Lil’s new fifty-dollar negligee. (Liberty magazine, August 17, 1929, p. 38)

During his over four decades as the preeminent illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post, Joseph Christian Leyendecker's clever illustrations were eagerly anticipated by enthusiastic readership across the country, and none more so than his holiday designs. One of Leyendecker's most celebrated creations was his groundbreaking idea of the New Year's Baby. Originally portrayed as a fleshy sweet-faced child complete with tiny angel wings, the New Year's Baby gradually morphed into a worldly tot acutely aware of the social and political issues facing the nation at the time. In fact, Leyendecker's final Post cover illustration was the 1943 New Year's Baby.
Following the success of these Post covers, the artist was hired to create advertisements for the American Oil Company (AMOCO). Throughout the 1940s and through the final years of his life, Leyendecker produced ads incorporating his famed New Year's Baby into AMOCO advertisements, as in the present work, Happy Landing...
