19th Century Bench
Located in New York, NY
Early 19th century Chinese bench. A special black lacquered antique Elm wood bench circa 1800. A waisted (refers to specific Chinese furniture construction & joinery) raised top set on frame with hump back stretchers and struts. A most sensational patina of black lacquer worn through to the wood showcases the benches elegant presence and raw beauty. This is an original piece with a 200 plus year history. The raw top is worn silk like smooth from age and use. The reaming black lacquer is thick having an alligatored rustic patina. The construction is solid and strong. Feet having scroll key detail carved to faces with wear prevalent to the bottom of the feet. The humpback struts show ware from one side being more evident then on the other side, more lacquer remains covering one strut. A very significant Antique Chinese Bench...

Walnut and Corian Gallery Bench Mid-Century Modern inspired Minimal Handmade
By Le Corbusier, Maarten van Severen, George Nakashima, Figure Ground
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This bench is composed of a Corian top floating on an elegantly detailed walnut frame. It is large enough for one's imagination or a group conversation. Spanning 7' long, it commands environments while subtly disappearing like its double miter joints that waterfall into the walnut grain.
The bench is sawn from long hand-selected boards, carefully milled with a miter joint detail that cascades or 'waterfalls' a continuous grain from the seat down through the legs. To further accentuate the bench's slender span, we chose a double miter cut on the edge profile that almost makes the Bench's thickness at first glance disappear.
The white-to-walnut bench refines the moment of repose. Its minimalism is as seductive as its touch to the senses. This bench is versatile and can just as easily define a vestibule or gallery window as it will sit aside a matching dining table.
Finished in Tung oil it maintains a natural look and feel for the locally sourced black walnut.
This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request. Due to natural materials used, the object received will be unique in material figuring and coloration.
No item assembly or installation is necessary. Care for the object is minimal and can be conditioned every 2 years to maintain the original finish.
All of our pieces are originally designed and handmade in the Brooklyn, NY based Figure+Ground studio; we don't believe in the separation of design and fabrication. Each item is handcrafted, serialized, and shipped with a “Certificate of Authenticity”, documenting its place in history. Own an original Figure+Ground Piece...

18th Century Spanish Colonial Bench
Located in Rio De Janeiro, BR
18th Century Spanish Colonial Bench
A rare and highly evocative mid 18th-century Spanish Colonial bench, crafted entirely in solid hardwood, likely native to the Americas, displaying the unmistakable synthesis of Iberian baroque influences and vernacular craftsmanship typical of colonial furniture. This bench stands out for its sculptural silhouette, featuring a high backrest and apron, both adorned with a rhythmic sequence of arched scalloped patterns, known in period terminology as perfiles lobulados. This decorative motif, rooted in both Moorish and Spanish medieval designs, was commonly adapted by colonial artisans throughout the Viceroyalties.
The bench retains its original joinery and pegged construction, a testament to its authenticity and structural integrity. The slightly canted backrest, crowned by finial posts, offers both aesthetic charm and ergonomic comfort, making it suitable for both domestic and ecclesiastical settings. The aged patina, with rich oxidation and wear consistent with centuries of use, enhances its historical character without compromising stability. The robust seat, also original, rests securely above the elegantly shaped skirt, whose pronounced lobes lend movement and visual rhythm to the piece.
This is not merely a utilitarian bench but an embodiment of the colonial spirit — practical yet imbued with artistry. Ideal for collectors, decorators, or institutions seeking an authentic representation of 18th-century Spanish Colonial design. Its simplicity, combined with the boldness of its cutouts, makes it versatile enough to grace a rustic hacienda...
